A case of gingival fibromatosis with hypertrichosis is reported in a 10 year old girl. The condition is a syndrome and presents as a triad of gingival fibromatosis, hypertrichosis and mental retardation. Following surgical management, no recurrence was seen in the immediate post-surgical period. Even if recurrence occurs excision is recommended as the psychological benefits resulting from cosmetic improvement outweigh the danger of recurrence.

Biopsy specimens were taken at gingivectomy from 18 adult patients undergoing treatment for chronic marginal periodontitis. They were embedded so that the cut surface of the gingiva was parallel to the top of the block to obtain a comprehensive view in a transversal plane of the inflammatory cell infiltrate near the bottom of the pocket. Sections were stained with HES or with toluidine blue for histological description, and acid alpha-naphthyl acetate esterase (ANAE) was used to differentially stain T lymphocytes, plasma cells and monocytes/macrophages. Sections stained with HES showed that th

A survey was conducted of 423 crown margins that were divided into 355 subgingival margins and 68 supragingival margins. The plaque index, gingival bleeding, and recession surrounding the artificial crown were recorded and compared to the unprepared contralateral tooth. Gingival tissues tended to bleed 2.42 times more frequently with subgingival margins and have a 2.65 times higher chance of gingival recession. Crowns with supragingival margins did not differ significantly compared with the contralateral tooth, but crowns with subgingival margins had greater bleeding and recession compared wit

Facial gingival surfaces over cuspids and bicuspids in 20 patients were monitored for 5 years to evaluate the importance of attached gingiva in the maintenance of a stable periodontium. 43 surfaces "at risk" were compared to 36 "non-risk" surfaces within these patients. Surfaces "at risk" had to meet the following 3 criteria as established by both of 2 independent examiners: width of keratinized gingiva less than or equal to 1.0 mm; absence of attached gingiva; mobility of the gingival margin. During the 5 years of observation, "non-risk" surfaces showed a trend toward decrease in mean width o

The purpose of this study was to qualitatively compare three recent techniques of Langerhans cells detection in oral epithelium and to quantitatively compare Langerhans cells in clinically normal and clinically inflamed human gingival biopsies. Eleven subjects were selected who displayed chronic periodontitis and moderate gingival inflammation. A quadrant associated with clinically inflamed tissues was not treated, while the remaining teeth were scaled and root-planed. Two gingival biopsies were taken: clinically normal, treated tissue; and clinically inflamed, untreated tissue. Langerhans cel

Presented in this article is a technique in which vertical releasing incisions are used to modify the basic pedicle graft procedure in the treatment of localized gingival recession. Criteria for the selection of a proper donor site are discussed, and the rationale for its use is explained. Two case reports are included to demonstrate the use of the procedure.

Nineteen patients with systemic sclerosis, including two with CREST syndrome variant, were clinically evaluated for oral and gingival manifestations of their disease. Subjectively over 50% complained of xerostomia, limited opening, recurrent "mouth sores" and dysphagia. Four patients indicated that they had been refused dental care due to limited accessibility to the oral cavity. Objectively, physical examination disclosed prominent lingual and buccal mucosal crenations and loss of tongue mobility with fibrotic induration in 25% of the subjects examined. Three of the patients with advanced dis

This case report presents clinical observations of alterations in periodontally diseased soft tissues associated with the development of scurvy. The sudden clinical appearance of the gingival lesions suggested a differential diagnosis of scurvy, acute leukemia and diabetes. Such lesions may develop prior to or simultaneous with extraoral findings. Coordination of systemic and local therapy effectively resolved the disease state. The dentist may be the first source of consultation for the patient with scurvy. An appreciation for this rare but potentially devastating condition is necessary for s
