Auditory changes in awake guinea pigs exposed to overcompressed music.

Exposure to loud sound during leisure time is identified as a significant risk factor for hearing by health authorities worldwide. The curre … ged. Auditory effects of a single 4 hour exposure to the same music were compared in two samples of guinea pigs exposed either to its original or overcompressed version played at the same average level of 102 dBA allowed by French regulations. Apart from a temporary shift of otoacoustic emissions at the lowest two frequencies 2 and 3 kHz, music exposure …

Primary Urinary Bladder Tumors in Three Guinea Pigs (Cavia Porcellus).

Urinary bladder tumors are not common in guinea pigs, but case numbers being diagnosed have increased in the past years. The authors present 3 referred cases of primary urinary bladder tumors in pet guinea pigs diagnosed using diagnostic imaging (CT, radiography, and ultrasonography) and exploratory laparotomy. Excision was not possible in the first case as the tumor was located at the neck of the urinary bladder and the owner opted for intraoperative euthanasia. The second and third cases both had tumors originating from the apex of the urinary bladder. The third guinea pig went into cardiac …

Demographic and Methodological Heterogeneity in Electrocardiogram Signals From Guinea Pigs.

BACKGROUND: Initial treatment of Eichenholtz stage I Charcot arthropathy of the foot generally is total contact casting and nonweightbearing. This method, however, often is time-consuming and has a poor result. This study was done to determine the success rate of total contact casting in a small group of patients and to establish a benchmark time period for treatment. METHODS: Ten subjects with acute Eichenholtz stage I (stage of development) Charcot foot arthropathy were prospectively treated with weightbearing total contact cast therapy, undergoing biweekly cast changes. One subject did not

Lassa antiviral LHF-535 protects guinea pigs from lethal challenge.

LHF-535 is a small molecule antiviral currently in development for the treatment of Lassa fever, a zoonotic disease endemic in West Africa that generates significant morbidity and mortality. Current treatment options are inadequate, and there are no approved therapeutics or vaccines for Lassa fever. LHF-535 was evaluated in a lethal guinea pig model of Lassa pathogenesis, using once-daily administration of a fixed dose (50 mg/kg/day) initiating either 1 or 3 days after inoculation with a lethal dose of Lassa virus. LHF-535 reduced viremia and clinical signs and protected all animals from letha…

High fat high sucrose diet-induced dyslipidemia in guinea pigs.

Easy access to high-calorie and fat-dense fast food has resulted in unhealthy dietary and lifestyle changes worldwide, which affects both developed and developing economies. This predisposes populations to a considerable number of metabolic and inflammatory conditions, such as diabetes, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Guinea pigs have been proposed as a model to study high-fat diet-induced metabolic disease due to their similar antioxidant metabolism and lipid profile to humans, and their susceptibility to atherosclerosis and endothelial disease. Thi…

Preliminary Evaluation of a Novel Fetal Guinea Pig Myelomeningocele Model.

INTRODUCTION: Translational models of myelomeningocele (MMC) are needed to test novel in utero interventions. An ideal animal model for MMC has locomotor function at birth and is low cost enough to allow for high throughput. The rat MMC model is limited by immature locomotor function at birth. The ovine MMC model is a costly surgical model. Guinea pigs are uniquely suited for an MMC model being a small animal model with locomotor function at birth. We aimed to develop a retinoic acid (RA) model of MMC in the guinea pig and to evaluate if pregnant guinea pigs could tolerate uterine manipulation…

Sjögren's syndrome in children: about 15 cases in Guinea Conakry.

OBJECTIVES: Sjögren's syndrome is rare in children and most often secondary. It frequently affects girls and is characterized by dry eye syndrome, mouth and sometimes systemic involvement. Its diagnosis is difficult to establish in children. We report a series of 15 cases of Sjögren's syndrome in order to clarify the peculiarities of this condition in children. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This retrospective study was carried out over a 2-year period focused on children under 16 years of age who had been followed for Sjögren's syndrome in the rheumatology and pediatric departments. Patient data were

Ventral cochlear nucleus bushy cells encode hyperacusis in guinea pigs.

Psychophysical studies characterize hyperacusis as increased loudness growth over a wide-frequency range, decreased tolerance to loud sounds and reduced behavioral reaction time latencies to high-intensity sounds. While commonly associated with hearing loss, hyperacusis can also occur without hearing loss, implicating the central nervous system in the generation of hyperacusis. Previous studies suggest that ventral cochlear nucleus bushy cells may be putative neural contributors to hyperacusis. Compared to other ventral cochlear nucleus output neurons, bushy cells show high firing rates as wel

Insect trypanosomatids in Papua New Guinea: high endemism and diversity.

The extreme biological diversity of Oceanian archipelagos has long stimulated research in ecology and evolution. However, parasitic protists in this geographic area remained neglected and no molecular analyses have been carried out to understand the evolutionary patterns and relationships with their hosts. Papua New Guinea (PNG) is a biodiversity hotspot containing over 5% of the world's biodiversity in less than 0.5% of the total land area. In the current work, we examined insect heteropteran hosts collected in PNG for the presence of trypanosomatid parasites. The diversity of insect flagella…

Hearing differences in Hartley guinea pig stocks from two breeders.

Across the world, dozens of outbred Hartley guinea pig stocks are used for auditory experiments. The genetic makeup of these different stocks will differ due to differences in breeding protocols, history and genetic drift. In fact, outbred breeding protocols are not intended to produce genetically identical animals, neither across breeders, nor across time. For this reason, it is unclear how reproducible experimental results are likely to be using animals from different stocks. We evaluated the consistency of cochlear function using both clicks and tones in Hartley guinea pigs as a function of…

New Guinea bone daggers were engineered to preserve social prestige.

Bone daggers were once widespread in New Guinea. Their purpose was both symbolic and utilitarian; they functioned as objects of artistic expression with the primary function of stabbing and killing people at close quarters. Most daggers were shaped from the tibiotarsus of cassowaries, but daggers shaped from the femora of respected men carried greater social prestige. The greater cross-sectional curvature of human bone daggers indicates superior strength, but the material properties of cassowary bone are unknown. It is, therefore, uncertain whether the macrostructure of human bone daggers exis…

Zika Virus IgG in Infants with Microcephaly, Guinea-Bissau, 2016.

We analyzed blood samples from infants born with microcephaly and their mothers in Guinea-Bissau in 2016 for pathogens associated with birth defects. No Zika virus RNA was detected, but Zika virus IgG was highly prevalent. We recommend implementing pathogen screening of infants with congenital defects in Guinea-Bissau.

Parainfluenza 3-Induced Cough Hypersensitivity in the Guinea Pig Airways.

The effect of respiratory tract viral infection on evoked cough in guinea pigs was evaluated. Guinea pigs were inoculated intranasally with either parainfluenza type 3 (PIV3) and cough was quantified in conscious animals. The guinea pigs infected with PIV3 (day 4) coughed nearly three times more than those treated with the viral growth medium in response to capsaicin, citric acid, and bradykinin. Since capsaicin, citric acid, and bradykinin evoked coughing in guinea pigs can be inhibited by drugs that antagonize the transient receptor potential cation channel, subfamily V, member 1 (TRPV1), it…

Unique human immune signature of Ebola virus disease in Guinea.

Despite the magnitude of the Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak in West Africa, there is still a fundamental lack of knowledge about the pathophysiology of EVD. In particular, very little is known about human immune responses to Ebola virus. Here we evaluate the physiology of the human T cell immune response in EVD patients at the time of admission to the Ebola Treatment Center in Guinea, and longitudinally until discharge or death. Through the use of multiparametric flow cytometry established by the European Mobile Laboratory in the field, we identify an immune signature that is unique in EVD…

Unusual Ebola Virus Chain of Transmission, Conakry, Guinea, 2014-2015.

In October 2015, a new case of Ebola virus disease in Guinea was detected. Case investigation, serology, and whole-genome sequencing indicated possible transmission of the virus from an Ebola virus disease survivor to another person and then to the case-patient reported here. This transmission chain over 11 months suggests slow Ebola virus evolution.

High-speed video analysis of acoustically oscillated guinea pig stapes.

OBJECTIVE: We investigated the ossicular movement in the near-intact middle ear in response to acoustic stimulation using a high-speed video camera and video analysis software program. DESIGN: We have designed a good visual access to the middle ear of the guinea pig by opening the ventral wall of the otic capsule, without injuring the sound-conducting structures, from the external auditory canal to the oval window. The high-speed video camera could record analysable ossicular motion up to 4000 frames per second. RESULTS: The stapes showed reciprocal movement in the same frequency as the stim…

Guinea worm (Dracunculiasis) eradication: update on progress and endgame challenges.

The International Commission for the Certification of Dracunculiasis Eradication (ICCDE) met in December to review progress towards eradication. The status of the programme was presented by WHO and The Carter Center, Atlanta. The Commission received reports from international certification teams that Cote d'Ivoire, Niger and Nigeria were free of transmission and should be certified, while four countries, namely Chad, Ethiopia, Mali and South Sudan, remained endemic. The Commission certified that Somalia and South Africa were free of transmission. During 2013, there was a decline of about 78% i
