Nurses' hand decontamination practice: results of a local study.

Cross-infection in hospital occurs mainly via hands. Hand washing is the most effective means of prevention, yet it has been reported that hands are washed too seldom, often inappropriately and that technique is poor. However, these claims are often made without explaining precisely how data were collected. This study employed more rigorous criteria than earlier research to judge the appropriateness and technique of nurses' hand contamination. During the 2 h that they were observed nurses decontaminated hands after 28.7% patient contacts. The data were then reanalysed so that only those activi

Prevalence of occupationally related hand dermatitis in dental workers.

Occupationally related hand dermatitis has been attributed to frequent hand-washing, exposure to possible sensitizers and latex glove use. The authors conducted a study to determine the prevalence of occupationally related hand dermatitis in dental personnel. They found that 75 (19.2 percent) of 390 subjects self-reported they had a positive history of hand dermatitis. Further testing of 53 of these subjects indicated that only 9.4 percent reacted to the 45 allergens tested, and 3.8 percent had an allergy to latex.

Phylogenomic analysis of aquatic and clinical OXA-23-positive Acinetobacter baumannii belonging to the international clone 5 (ST79) from Southeast Brazil.

Categorized as a critical priority pathogen by the World Health Organization (WHO), carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB) is a leading cause of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) worldwide. Although the environmental spread of healthcare-acquired A. baumannii strains through hospital wastewater and urban sewage has been suggested, evidence from genomic studies is still lacking. In this study, as part of the Grand Challenges Explorations: New Approaches to Characterize the Global Burden of Antimicrobial Resistance Program, we present genomic data supporting the expansion of i

Investigating the mechanisms of ethanol-induced disruption of COVID-19 lipid bilayers through molecular dynamics simulations.

CONTEXT: The COVID-19 pandemic, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, began in December 2019 in Wuhan, China. To mitigate the spread of COVID-19, public health officials strongly recommended preventive measures such as disinfectants, alcohol-based hand sanitizers, and face masks. The effect of ethanol on virus structure and inactivation remains unclear, and its molecular mechanism needs to be elucidated. This study elucidates how ethanol solutions interact with the lipid bilayer of the COVID-19 virus utilizing molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Its findings indicated that ethanol can deactiv

[Odontología en entorno COVID-19. Adaptación de las Unidades de Salud Bucodental en los centros de salud de la Comunidad de Madrid.].

The COVID-19 respiratory manifestations go from mild symptoms similar to those of a common cold to severe pneumonia with respiratory distress syndrome, septic shock and multiorgan failure. The disease is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, whose transmission mechanism most relevant to dentistry is through respiratory droplets and possibly also aerosols, as well as direct contact with mucous membranes of the nose, mouth or eye via contaminated hands or objects. The professionals of the dental health units have a high risk exposure since they work at short distances (less than 1 m from the head of t

Efficacy of microbicides for inactivation of Ebola-Makona virus on a non-porous surface: a targeted hygiene intervention for reducing virus spread.

Microbicides play critical roles in infection prevention and control of Ebola virus by decontaminating high-touch environmental surfaces (HITES), interrupting the virus-HITES-hands nexus. We evaluated the efficacy of formulations containing different microbicidal actives for inactivating Ebola virus-Makona strain (EBOV/Mak) on stainless-steel carriers per ASTM E2197-11. Formulations of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) (0.05-1%), ethanol (70%), chloroxylenol (PCMX) (0.12-0.48% by weight) in hard water, and a ready-to-use disinfectant spray with 58% ethanol (EDS), were tested at contact times of 0, o

Worldwide pattern of antibiotic prescription in endodontic infections.

BACKGROUND: Odontogenic infections, and especially endodontic infections, are polymicrobial, involving a combination of Gram-positive and Gram-negative facultative anaerobes and strictly anaerobic bacteria. Therefore, antibiotics can be used as an adjunct to endodontic treatment. However, most chronic and even acute endodontic infections can be successfully managed by disinfection of the root-canal system, which eliminates the source of infection, followed by abscess drainage or tooth extraction, without the need for antibiotics. The literature provides evidence of inadequate prescribing pract

A case of nosocomial Legionella pneumonia associated with a contaminated hospital cooling tower.

We report the epidemiological investigation of a nosocomial pneumonia case due to Legionella pneumophila linked to a contaminated hospital cooling tower in an immune-compromised patient. A 73-year-old female patient was diagnosed with nosocomial Legionella pneumonia proven by a culture of L. pneumophila serogroup 1 from bronchoalveolar lavage fluid. Two strains isolated from the patient and two strains isolated from two cooling towers were found to be identical using repetitive-sequence-based-PCR with a 95% probability. This Legionella pneumonia case might be caused by aerosol from cooling tow

Catheter-related bloodstream infections in neonatal intensive care units.

Central venous catheters (CVCs) are regularly used in intensive care units, and catheter-related bloodstream infection (CRBSI) remains a leading cause of healthcare-associated infections, particularly in preterm infants. Increased survival rate of extremely-low-birth-weight infants can be partly attributed to routine practice of CVC placement. The most common types of CVCs used in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) include umbilical venous catheters, peripherally inserted central catheters, and tunneled catheters. CRBSI is defined as a laboratory-confirmed bloodstream infection (BSI) with e

Infection control and prevention strategies in the ICU.

Although only 5-10% of all hospitalized patients are treated in ICUs, they account for approximately 25% of all nosocomial infections, and the incidence of nosocomial infections in ICUs is 5-10 times higher than that observed in general hospital wards. Systemic and respiratory infections are far more common than in general wards, and most epidemics originate in ICUs. Nosocomial infections are the primary focus of most infection control programmes because they are the cause of high mortality rates in ICUs. Effective programmes are usually based on the cooperation of the intensive care physician

Nosocomial Respiratory Syncytial Virus in the Post-Pandemic Era: Evolving Epidemiology and Integrated Prevention Strategies.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Pandemic non-pharmaceutical interventions virtually eliminated respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) circulation in 2020-2021, and their relaxation was followed by unprecedented off-season resurgences. This narrative review, informed by a structured literature search, synthesizes current evidence on healthcare-associated RSV (HA-RSV), including transmission dynamics, vulnerable inpatient populations, and integrated prevention strategies, in the post-pandemic era. METHODS: We searched PubMed/MEDLINE and Europe PMC (January 2000-October 2025) using two complementary strategie

Strain-Specific Virolysis Patterns of Human Noroviruses in Response to Alcohols.

Alcohol-based hand sanitizers are widely used to disinfect hands to prevent the spread of pathogens including noroviruses. Alcohols inactivate norovirus by destruction of the viral capsid, resulting in the leakage of viral RNA (virolysis). Since conflicting results have been reported on the susceptibility of human noroviruses against alcohols, we exposed a panel of 30 human norovirus strains (14 GI and 16 GII strains) to different concentrations (50%, 70%, 90%) of ethanol and isopropanol and tested the viral RNA titer by RT-qPCR. Viral RNA titers of 10 (71.4%), 14 (100%), 3 (21.4%) and 7 (50%)

Reduction in intraoperative bacterial contamination of peripheral intravenous tubing through the use of a passive catheter care system.

BACKGROUND: Bacterial contamination of intravascular devices has been associated with increased morbidity and mortality in various hospital settings, including the perioperative environment. Catheter hub disinfection has been shown in an ex vivo model to attenuate intraoperative injection of bacterial organisms originating from the anesthesia provider's hands, providing the impetus for improvement in intraoperative disinfection techniques and compliance. In the current study, we investigated the clinical effectiveness of a new, passive catheter care station in reducing the incidence of bacteri

[The prevalence of antiseptic resistance genes (qacA/B and smr) and antibiotic resistance in clinical Staphylococcus aureus strains].

Staphylococcus aureus is an organism of major medical importance, leading to skin and soft tissue infections, bacteremia, and endocarditis. S.aureus isolates are becoming increasingly resistant to numerous antimicrobial agents including antiseptics and disinfectants. Quaternary ammonium compounds are disinfectants that play an important role in the control of nosocomial infections. Presence of genes conferring resistance to quaternary ammonium compounds is widely distributed among clinical staphylococci isolated from certain areas of the world. In this present study, we aimed to study the prev
