The efficacy of viral capsid inhibitors in human enterovirus infection and associated diseases.

Enteroviruses are members of picornavirus family which causes diverse and severe diseases in humans and animals. Clinical manifestations of enterovirus infections include fever, hand, foot, and mouth disease, and herpangina. Enteroviruses also cause potentially severe and life-threatening infections such as meningitis, encephalitis, myocarditis, polio-like syndrome, and neonatal sepsis. With the emergence of enterovirus all over the world as the major causative agent of HFMD fatalities in recent years and in the absence of any effective anti-enteroviral therapy, there is clearly a need to find

Management of adverse events and other practical considerations in patients receiving capecitabine (Xeloda).

As capecitabine (Xeloda) is converted to 5-FU within tumours it can produce 5-FU-like side effects. However, diarrhoea, stomatitis, nausea, alopecia and neutropenia are significantly less frequent than with i.v. 5-FU. Hand-foot syndrome (HFS) is the only clinical adverse event occurring more often during capecitabine treatment. These findings in MCRC have also been confirmed in a large phase III trial in early stage colon cancer (X-Act adjuvant study) and phase II clinical trials in metastatic breast cancer. Because capecitabine is taken in the outpatient setting, the nurse and/or supervising …

Multiple functions of Dlx genes.

Dlx genes comprise a highly conserved family of homeobox genes homologous to the distal-less (Dll) gene of Drosophila. They are thought to act as transcription factors. All Dlx genes are expressed in spatially and temporally restricted patterns in craniofacial primordia, basal telencephalon and diencephalon, and in distal regions of extending appendages, including the limb and the genital bud. Most of them are expressed during morphogenesis of sensory organs and during migration of neural crest cells and interneurons. In addition, Dlx5 and Dlx6 are expressed in differentiating osteoblasts. Phase II study of 96-hr continuous-infusion etoposide and doxorubicin with bolus cyclophosphamide in refractory epithelial ovarian cancer.

Effective salvage chemotherapy for patients with ovarian cancer who have failed platinum- and taxane-based regimens has not been identified. It has been reported that prolonged infusions of chemotherapy may be active in some malignancies which have become refractory to bolus treatments. We evaluated a regimen of 96-hr continuous-infusion doxorubicin (10 mg/m2/24 hr), etoposide (50 mg/m2/24 hr), and bolus cyclophosphamide (750 mg/m2) administered every 21 days to patients with ovarian cancer who had previously been treated with paclitaxel and a platinum compound. Nineteen women were treated, 15

[Rheumatoid arthritis: a general disease and local diseases].

The rheumatoid synovitis affects the joints by destroying the cartilage, the sub-chondral bone and the articular capsule. The tendons and ligaments can be degraded by proximity or by the means of the affected synovial sheaths. This conjunction of effects involves a foreseeable degradation on the complex articulations whose clinician must know the stages to interfere effectively into a preventive way by local interventions when the general treatments of the disease are insufficient and before recourse to the repairing surgery. This management can only be considered with a team where the general

Clinical Evidence on the Use of Chinese Herbal Medicine for Acute Infectious Diseases: An Overview of Systematic Reviews.

Background: Acute infectious diseases constitute the most prevalent public health emergency (PHE) in China. Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) has long been used in the treatment of acute infections, but the overall evidence of its benefit and harm has not been comprehensively and systematically evaluated. Methods: We searched CBM, CNKI, Wanfang, PubMed, Cochrane Library, embase and preprint platforms to retrieve systematic reviews (SRs) on CHM for acute infectious. Participants with COVID-19, SARS, H1N1, tuberculosis, bacillary dysentery, mumps, herpangina, hand-foot-and-mouth disease (HFMD), and

Topographic Somatosensory Imagery for Real-Time fMRI Brain-Computer Interfacing.

Real-time functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is a promising non-invasive method for brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). BCIs translate brain activity into signals that allow communication with the outside world. Visual and motor imagery are often used as information-encoding strategies, but can be challenging if not grounded in recent experience in these modalities, e.g., in patients with locked-in-syndrome (LIS). In contrast, somatosensory imagery might constitute a more suitable information-encoding strategy as the somatosensory function is often very robust. Somatosensory imagery ha

Correction of Brachymetatarsia and Medial Angulation of the Great Toe of Apert Foot By Distraction Osteogenesis: A Review of 7 Years of Experience.

BACKGROUND: Apert foot anomalies may cause severe problems such as pain and development of callus formation related to weight redistribution, problems with footwear, and gait disturbances that may limit their daily activities. The main purpose of this study was to review our experience with distraction osteogenesis for the correction of brachymetatarsia and the great toe angulation of the patients with Apert syndrome. METHODS: This study retrospectively reviewed 7 patients (14 extremities) followed up for Apert syndrome who underwent distraction for the correction of bilateral congenital brac

Neu Laxova syndrome.

NeuLaxova syndrome (NLS) is a rare congenital abnormality involving multiple systems. Until date, only 60 cases of this syndrome have been reported in the literature. A stillborn fetus from a 23-year-old female with bad obstetrics history and consanguinity marriage, presented at 41 weeks gestation and not appreciating fetal movements for the past 3 days. Ultrasound examination revealed the absence of fetal cardiac activity and features of growth retardation. The fetus was sent for pathological examination. At autopsy, fetus had ichthyosis over the scalp and face, depressed nasal bridge, low se

[Concealed exclusion of perforant and varicose veins of lower extremities venous insufficiency (communication II)].

The second and the third elements of surgical treatment of a varicose disease and chronic venous insufficiency by concealed exclusion of perforant and varicose subcutaneous veins are outlined. The exclusion of perforant veins of the shin is limited by the zone of Achilles (sub- and retromalleolar) cellular space in muscular channel of the lower extremity. Blunt supra- and infrafascial dissection of cellular tissue with passing there extramuscular perforant veins is performed between two incisions-punctures of the skin of internal surface of the shin at the level of 7 and 20 cm from the sole of

Four-year study of WHO virus reports on enteroviruses other than poliovirus.

In 1963 the World Health Organization established a system for collecting and distributing information on viruses. By 1970, 93 laboratories in 33 countries were participating. The present study is an analysis of the reports on coxsackieviruses A and B and echoviruses for the 4 years 1967-70. Among the coxsackieviruses A, type 9 was reported most frequently, and the most frequently reported coxsackievirus B was type 3. Among the echoviruses, types 9, 6, and 30 were common. In the northern hemisphere the season of highest incidence for each of the three groups was June-October; in the southern h

Treatment of the hands and feet in Apert syndrome: an evolution in management.

Apert syndrome is a relatively uncommon condition that is instantly recognizable on the basis of the pan-syndactylies involving both the hands and feet. For more than 10 years, the treatment of Apert syndrome hand and foot anomalies was approached in a comprehensive manner, with attempts to maximize the final results and minimize the total number of operations. Numerous conventions were abandoned in the development of this approach, with the introduction of some new methodologies, including (1) release of all 10 fingers, and toes, in only two operations, (2) elimination of routine digital ampu

Objective Improvements in Peripheral Arterial Disease from Dorsal Root Ganglion Stimulation: A Case Series.

BACKGROUND: The sympathetic nervous system (SNS) is important in the regulation of perfusion. Dorsal root ganglion stimulation (DRG-S) modulates sympathetic tone and is approved to treat complex regional pain syndrome, a disorder related to SNS dysfunction. We herein present 3 cases of DRG-S therapy to improve blood flow and symptoms of ischemia in peripheral arterial disease (PAD). METHODS: Patient 1 is a 44-year-old female with dry gangrene of the third and fourth digits of her right hand due to Raynaud's syndrome who was scheduled for amputation of the affected digits. DRG-S leads were pla

Clinically distinct epigenetic subgroups in Silver-Russell syndrome: the degree of H19 hypomethylation associates with phenotype severity and genital and skeletal anomalies.

CONTEXT: The H19 imprinting control region (ICR), located on chromosome 11p15.5, has been reported hypomethylated in 20-65% of Silver-Russell syndrome (SRS) patients. OBJECTIVE: We investigated the methylation status of 11p15.5 ICRs in SRS patients and children born small for gestational age (SGA) to clarify the relationship between phenotype and H19 methylation status. METHODS: We performed methylation screens of the H19 and KCNQ1OT1 ICRs in 42 SRS patients, including seven maternal uniparental disomy of chromosome 7 patients, and 90 SGA children without SRS. Clinical data were evaluated fr

A distinct autosomal recessive disorder of limb development with preaxial brachydactyly, phalangeal duplication, symphalangism and hyperphalangism.

We describe four children from two consanguineous families with distinctive hand and foot anomalies including preaxial brachydactyly, together with phalangeal duplication, symphalangism and hyperphalangism of fingers I-III. These anomalies are remarkably similar to those described in a previous case report. Additional features were noted both in this case and, to variable degrees, in the four children reported here. These included sensorineural deafness, optic atrophy, mild facial dysmorphism, orodental anomalies and developmental delay. Autosomal recessive inheritance was previously suggested

Laugier-Hunziker-Baran syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Laugier-Hunziker-Baran syndrome represents a rare acquired pigmentary disorder which has no relevance to internal disorders and has no familial association. There are few reports on histopathologic studies of this syndrome concerning Japanese individuals. The differential diagnosis of oral and pigmented lesions between Laugier-Hunziker-Baran syndrome and other disorders, Peutz-Jeghers syndrome in particular, requires our utmost consideration. STUDY DESIGN: Biopsy specimens of 2 cases were taken from pigmented maculae on the lower lips, buccal mucosa, tongue, and palate. RESULTS: S
