Prevalence of Vitamin B12 Deficiency and Its Association With Age and Gender in a Healthy Population From Sulaymaniyah City, Iraq.

Vitamin B12 plays a vital role in neurological function, DNA synthesis, and red blood cell production, yet its deficiency remains an underrecognized public health issue, particularly in developing countries such as Iraq. This study assessed the prevalence of vitamin B12 deficiency and its association with age and gender in a healthy population from Sulaymaniyah City, Iraq. Serum vitamin B12 levels were evaluated in 427 individuals aged 1-89 years using chemiluminescent immunoassay. Participants were stratified by age group and gender, and vitamin B12 status was classified as deficient (< 200 p

Sirtuin 1 serum concentration in healthy children - dependence on sex, age, stage of puberty, body weight and diet.

INTRODUCTION: Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) is known to be involved in sensing cellular energy levels and regulating energy metabolism. This study aimed to evaluate fasting serum SIRT1 levels in healthy children, and to analyse the influence of age, sex, puberty, body weight, height, and diet on its concentration. METHODS: 47 healthy children aged 4-14 with weight and height within normal range and no chronic disease were included into the study. Fasting serum SIRT1 concentrations were estimated by Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA). RESULTS: Results showed that serum SIRT1 concentrations in heal

A multi-centric study to estimate prevalence of anaemia in apparently healthy children between 6 and 59 months of age.

BACKGROUND: Prevalence of anaemia is 67% in children between 6 and 59 months of age. There is a discrepancy in prevalence of anaemia in view of various cutoffs and capillary versus venous sampling. Prevalence studies at various levels are mandated for planning and implementation of policies to control anaemia. METHODS: This cross-sectional observational hospital-based multi-centric study enrolled apparently healthy eligible children aged between 6 and 59 months from Armed Forces Medical Services hospitals and estimated the prevalence of anaemia in "venous blood samples". Demographic and anthr

Exploring longitudinal changes in implicit awareness of dementia: An investigation of the emotional Stroop effect in healthy ageing and mild dementia.

The aim of the study was to investigate responses to dementia-relevant words in healthy older people and to investigate changes in response over 20-months in people with early-stage dementia. An emotional Stroop task, using colour-naming dementia-relevant words, was used as an indicator of implicit awareness of dementia. Overall, 24 people with dementia and 24 healthy older people completed an emotional Stroop task (T1). People with dementia completed the same task again after 12 (T2) and 20 (T3) months. For people with dementia emotional Stroop performance was contrasted with ratings of expli

Effects of Walking Speed and Added Mass on Hip Joint Quasi-Stiffness in Healthy Young and Middle-Aged Adults.

Joint quasi-stiffness has been often used to inform exoskeleton design. Further understanding of hip quasi-stiffness is needed to design hip exoskeletons. Of interest are wearer responses to walking speed changes with added mass of the exoskeleton. This study analyzed hip quasi-stiffness at 3 walking speed levels and 9 added mass distributions among 13 young and 16 middle-aged adults during mid-stance hip extension and late-stance hip flexion. Compared to young adults, middle-aged adults maintained a higher quasi-stiffness with a smaller range. For a faster walking speed, both age groups incre

Manifestations of Alzheimer's disease genetic risk in the blood are evident in a multiomic analysis in healthy adults aged 18 to 90.

Genetics play an important role in late-onset Alzheimer's Disease (AD) etiology and dozens of genetic variants have been implicated in AD risk through large-scale GWAS meta-analyses. However, the precise mechanistic effects of most of these variants have yet to be determined. Deeply phenotyped cohort data can reveal physiological changes associated with genetic risk for AD across an age spectrum that may provide clues to the biology of the disease. We utilized over 2000 high-quality quantitative measurements obtained from blood of 2831 cognitively normal adult clients of a consumer-based scien

The relationships between age, sex, and cerebrovascular reactivity to hypercapnia using traditional and kinetic-based analyses in healthy adults.

The effect of age and sex on intracranial and extracranial cerebrovascular function is poorly understood. We investigated the relationships between age, sex, and cerebrovascular reactivity (CVR) to hypercapnia in 73 healthy adults (18-80 yr, n = 39 female). CVR to hypercapnia was assessed in the middle cerebral artery (MCA) using transcranial Doppler ultrasound and at the internal carotid artery (ICA) using duplex ultrasound. MCA CVR was characterized by peak MCA velocity (MCAv) response per mmHg increase in end-tidal CO2 and by using a monoexponential model to characterize the kinetics (time

Safety data from the MenB-FHbp clinical development program in healthy individuals aged 10 years and older.

BACKGROUND: The MenB-FHbp vaccine (Trumenba®) is licensed in various countries for the prevention of meningococcal serogroup B disease in individuals ≥ 10 years of age. The clinical development program included 11 completed trials where, in each trial, MenB-FHbp had an acceptable safety profile after a primary vaccination series was administered to individuals 10-65 years of age. However, the detection of potential rare events was limited because of individual clinical trial size. The current safety analysis evaluates pooled reactogenicity and other adverse events (AEs) reported in these trial

Computerized Cognitive Training by Healthy Older and Younger Adults: Age Comparisons of Overall Efficacy and Selective Effects on Cognition.

Among the non-pharmacological methods under development for maintaining cognitive function across the lifespan is computerized cognitive training (CCT). There has been considerable interest in using CCT to slow or remediate age-related cognitive decline, both normal and pathological. Toward these ends, it would be useful to know how the effects of CCT on cognitive function vary over the course of normal cognitive aging. Are there changes in either 1) the overall efficacy of CCT or 2) which cognitive faculties are affected? To address these two questions, we reanalyzed results from a large onli

Genetic influence on ageing-related changes in resting-state brain functional networks in healthy adults: A systematic review.

This systematic review examines the genetic and epigenetic factors associated with resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) in healthy human adult brains across the lifespan, with a focus on genes associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD). There were 58 studies included. The key findings are: (i) genetic factors have a low to moderate contribution; (ii) the apolipoprotein E ε2/3/4 polymorphism was the most studied genetic variant, with the APOE-ε4 allele most consistently associated with deficits of the default mode network, but there were insufficient studies to determine the relationships

AIDSImpact special issue - broadening the lens: recommendations from rehabilitation in chronic disease to advance healthy ageing with HIV.

People living with HIV are ageing with a combination of physical, mental and social health challenges, known as disability. Although rehabilitation can address disability, the field is still emerging. Our aim was to identify similar disability experiences across complex chronic conditions and establish recommendations for future rehabilitation research and practice to advance healthy ageing with HIV. We conducted a consultation with 77 stakeholders from the United Kingdom, Canada, and Ireland with expertise in the fields of rehabilitation and HIV, cancer, cardiovascular disease, renal disease,

Effect of age and sex on neurodevelopment and neurodegeneration in the healthy eye: Longitudinal functional and structural study in the Long-Evans rat.

The processes involved in neurodevelopment and aging have not yet been fully discovered. This is especially challenging in premorbid or borderline situations of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's or glaucoma. The retina, as part of the central nervous system, can be considered the easiest and most accessible neural structure that can be analyzed using non-invasive methods. Animal studies of neuroretinal tissue in situations of health and under controlled conditions allow the earliest sex- and aging-induced changes to be analyzed so as to differentiate them from the first signs occu

Low-grade impairments in cognitive and kidney function in a healthy middle-aged general population: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Although the relationship between manifest chronic kidney disease and reduced cognitive function is well established, limited data exists on GFR and cognitive function in the general population. Both the brain and kidneys have low-impedance vascular beds, rendering them susceptible to damage from pulsatile blood flow. An association between mildly reduced GFR and cognitive function in the healthy general population may reveal early disease mechanisms underlying low-grade impairment of both organs as well as the possibility for intervention. Our aim was to identify an early stage of
