In this series, we describe the techniques of atrial, ventricular incision and closure. Right atriotomy is a surgical procedure necessary to expose congenital abnormalities of the tricuspid valve and other congenital heart diseases such as atrial and ventricular septal defects. Whereas, left atriotomy( for example left side atrial, transseptal or superior transseptal incisions) is a technique needed to expose mitral valve disease, frequently used during the maze procedure. And finally, left ventriculostomy is a surgical approach applied during resection of scar tissue or thrombus of ventricula

To compare the clinical results of different surgical approaches for congenital heart disease in pediatric patients, 1669 cases of atrial septal defect, ventricular septal defect, or tetralogy of Fallot, which were corrected from January 1999 to December 2001, were classified according to approach (sternotomy, ministernotomy, or minithoracotomy). In cases of ventricular septal defect, the incidence of pulmonary complications was significantly higher in the minithoracotomy group than in the full sternotomy or ministernotomy groups. In patients with tetralogy of Fallot, hemoglobin concentration

In this paper, the lattice Boltzmann method was used to simulate the cardiac flow in children with aseptal defect. The inner wall model of the heart was reconstructed from 210 computed tomography scans. By simulating and comparing the cardiac flow field, the pressure field, the blood oxygen content, and the distribution of entropy generation before and after an operation, the effects of septal defect on pulmonary hypertension(PH), cyanosis, and heart load were analyzed in detail. It is found that the atrial septal defect(ASD) of the child we analyzed had a great influence on the blood oxygen c

Ivemark's syndrome consists of intracardiac anomalies, abnormal lobation of the lungs, and abdominal heterotaxy. A frequent intracardiac anomaly seen in Ivemark's syndrome is a common atrium, which is associated with left-to-right shunting. The increased blood flow and resistance within the pulmonary vasculature creates pulmonary hypertension and eventual reversal of the shunt physiology. In the absence of additional cyanotic malformations, survival into adulthood without prior surgical septation of the common atrium depends on the extent of pulmonary hypertension and intracardiac right-to-lef

OBJECTIVES: Small, unrepaired atrial septal defects are considered a benign lesion with good prognosis. Recently, clinical and register-based studies discovered increased long-term mortality and morbidity. The nature of these findings is not fully understood. Therefore, MRI was performed to evaluate cardiac function at rest and during exercise.
METHODS: Adults with open or spontaneously closed atrial septal defects and healthy, matched controls underwent MRI for evaluation of cardiac chamber volume. Quantitative flow scans measured blood flow in the ascending aorta and the proximal pulmonary

Survivorship into adulthood of patients with congenital heart disease is due to improvements in prenatal detection, novel surgeries, and specialized adult congenital heart disease care. As patients survive further into adulthood, long-term complications of congenital and repaired physiology have been more clearly elucidated. The overall mortality of patients with adult congenital heart disease with heart failure is around 4%. Congenital malformations, palliations, residual defects, and resultant physiology impact the right ventricle. This relationship influences morbidity and mortality. For th

3 cases are described exhibiting the rare malformation of right juxtaposition of the auricular appendages. 1 case was encountered unexpectedly during surgical repair of an atrial septal defect and the patient survived. In this instance the segmental arrangement was solitus-concordant-normally connected arteries and the only associated defects in the heart were the atrial septal defect and a persistent left superior vena cava. In contrast, the other cases were discovered at autopsy and in both the juxtaposition accompanied severe additional anomalies. Common atrioventricular canal deformities w

Systemic venous abnormalities are common and in some cases may be associated with congenital heart defects. We report here a case of a 67-year-old woman with bilateral superior vena cava with interruption of the inferior vena cava with hemiazygous continuation in the context of left atrial isomerism. These abnormalities were associated with a small secundum atrial septal defect and patent foramen ovale. The dilated hemiazygous vein was a potential mimicker of aortic pathology. The dilated coronary sinus was a sign of anomalous venous return. The echocardiographist should search systematically

There is no uniform pretreatment cardiac evaluation for infants treated with oral propranolol, which is now the drug of choice for hemangiomas of infancy requiring systemic medical intervention. The aim of this study was to report and evaluate the findings of pretreatment cardiac evaluation. Data were reviewed for patients evaluated by a single hemangioma specialist and a single pediatric cardiologist prior to initiation of propranolol for infantile hemangioma. Cardiac evaluation included a complete echocardiogram. From July 2009 through January 2013, 239 consecutive patients 12 months of age

BACKGROUND: Congenital heart defects (CHDs) are the heart structural malformations present at birth. Septal defects account for 40% of CHD, including atrial, ventricular and atrioventricular septal defects. In Pakistan, the prevalence of CHD is 3.4 in 1000, and a study estimated that 60,000 babies are born with CHD annually. Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR), a chief enzyme, involved in the folate metabolism. The missense mutation, C677T (rs1801133), exists in MTHFR gene, results in a MTHFR thermolabile variant having low enzymatic activity. The study is aim to identify the MTHFR C67

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES: Left-sided congestive heart failure (CHF) secondary to myxomatous mitral valve disease carries high morbidity and mortality in dogs. Left atrial decompression (LAD) has been employed in severely affected dogs refractory to medical therapy, but long-term outcomes have not been reported. The aim of this study was to evaluate survival time following LAD, the frequency of iatrogenic atrial septal defect closure, the frequency of right-sided CHF, and the frequency of cardiac-related hospitalizations.
ANIMALS, MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 111 client-owned dogs with sta

Two cases of Holt-Oram syndrome with an atrial septal defect and thumb deformities are reported. The embryological basis for the association between skeletal malformations particularly of the hand, and congenital heart disease, is discussed.

Double-orifice mitral valve is a rare congenital anomaly. Although it is more frequently associated with other cardiac abnormalities, it may occur as an isolated lesion. There are 2 forms of myocardial noncompaction: isolated and nonisolated myocardial noncompaction. Nonisolated myocardial noncompactions are occasionally reported postnatally in association with congenital heart anomalies such as ventricular septal defect, pulmonic stenosis, and atrial septal defect. To our knowledge, this is the first case presentation reporting a double-orifice mitral valve associated with nonisolated myocard

A group of 44 patients with a total of 48 cardiac lesions ( 22 tricuspid incompetence - TI - , 12 ventricular septal defect - VSD - and 14 atrial septal defect - ASD - , and two control groups of 20 normals and 23 patients with other cardiac disease , were studied by pulsed Doppler echocardiography ( PDE ) . The flow patterns recorded in the normal right heart were identical to those recorded previously during catheterisation . TI was diagnosed by the presence of an abnormal negative systolic wave usually associated with widening of the time interval histogram with a specificity of 82 % and a

BACKGROUND: Nowadays, more than 90% of patients with congenital heart disease (CHD) reach adulthood. However, long-term impact on neurodevelopment and executive functioning in adults with CHD are not completely understood.
PURPOSE: To investigate the self- and informant-reported executive functioning in adults with CHD operated in childhood.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Longitudinal study of a cohort of patients (n = 194, median age: 49.9 [46.1-53.8]) who were operated in childhood (< 15 years old) between 1968 and 1980 (median follow-up time: 45 [40-53] years) for one of the following diagnoses: a
