Drug Combinations Against Soil-Transmitted Helminth Infections.

The soil-transmitted helminths (STHs), Ascaris lumbricoides, hookworm and Trichuris trichiura are common in areas with warm and moist climates with little access to adequate water, sanitation, and hygiene affecting the poorest populations. The current control strategy of the World Health Organization is preventive chemotherapy (PC), i.e., the administration of the two benzimidazoles (albendazole and mebendazole) using single, oral doses to at risk populations without prior diagnosis. The recent success of PC is threatened by anthelmintic drug resistance and the low efficacy of the drugs agains

Efficacy and safety of co-administered ivermectin plus albendazole for treating soil-transmitted helminths: A systematic review, meta-analysis and individual patient data analysis.

BACKGROUND: The soil-transmitted helminths (STH), Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura and hookworms, infect 1.5 billion people worldwide and cause an estimated burden of 3.3 million disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). Current control strategies focus on morbidity reduction through preventive chemotherapy (PC) but the most commonly used recommended drugs (albendazole and mebendazole) are particularly inefficacious against T. trichiura. This, together with the threat of emerging drug resistance, calls for new control strategies, including co-administration with other anthelminthics. Iv

Competing for blood: the ecology of parasite resource competition in human malaria-helminth co-infections.

Ecological theory suggests that co-infecting parasite species can interact within hosts directly, via host immunity and/or via resource competition. In mice, competition for red blood cells (RBCs) between malaria and bloodsucking helminths can regulate malaria population dynamics, but the importance of RBC competition in human hosts was unknown. We analysed infection density (i.e. the concentration of parasites in infected hosts), from a 2-year deworming study of over 4000 human subjects. After accounting for resource-use differences among parasites, we find evidence of resource competition, p

Abnormal Helminth Egg Development, Strange Morphology, and the Identification of Intestinal Helminth Infections.

Occasionally, abnormal forms of parasitic helminth eggs are detected during routine diagnostics. This finding can prove problematic in diagnosis because morphologic analysis based on tightly defined measurements is the primary method used to identify the infecting species and molecular confirmation of species is not always feasible. We describe instances of malformed nematode eggs (primarily from members of the superfamily Ascaridoidea) from human clinical practice and experimental trials on animals. On the basis of our observations and historical literature, we propose that unusual developmen

Epidemiology of Plasmodium and Helminth Coinfection and Possible Reasons for Heterogeneity.

Understanding the impact of helminth infections on clinical malaria is useful for designing effective malaria control strategies. Plenty of epidemiological studies have been conducted to unravel the nature of interactions between Plasmodium and helminth infection. Careful broad summarization of the existing literature suggests that Schistosoma mansoni and hookworm infections may increase the risk of clinical malaria and associated morbidities, but Trichuris trichiura infection is not associated with the occurrence of clinical malaria and related outcomes. However, findings about effect of Asca

Human anthelminthic vaccines: Rationale and challenges.

Helminth infections are the most common afflictions of humankind, affecting almost every single person living in profound poverty. Through mass drug administration (MDA) we have seen sharp declines in the global prevalence of some helminth infections, including lymphatic filariasis, onchocerciasis, and ascariasis. However, since 1990, there has been no appreciable decrease in the global prevalence of hookworm infection, schistosomiasis, or food-borne trematodiases. Through the activities of a non-profit product development partnerships and two research institutes, a total of five human anthelm

Guinea Worm (Dracunculus medinensis) Infection in a Wild-Caught Frog, Chad.

A third-stage (infective) larva of Dracunculus medinensis, the causative agent of Guinea worm disease, was recovered from a wild-caught Phrynobatrachus francisci frog in Chad. Although green frogs (Lithobates clamitans) have been experimentally infected with D. medinensis worms, our findings prove that frogs can serve as natural paratenic hosts.

Applied field research for comprehensive helminth infection control.

The Institute for Tropical Medicine at University of Tübingen has established 30 years ago in Togo a Research Centre and Onchocerciasis Reference Laboratory (ORL). Onchocerca volvulus infection control and of other neglected tropical diseases has been the focus of activities, and those were performed together with the National Institute of Hygiene in Togo, the Medical Faculty at University of Lomé, national disease control programs and district and regional hospitals. The ORL contributed significantly to the assessment of ivermectin as the prime choice for onchocerciasis treatment, and 24 year

Intestinal helminth infections in feral cats and a raccoon dog on Aphaedo Island, Shinan-gun, with a special note on Gymnophalloides seoi infection in cats.

Four feral cats and a raccoon dog purchased from a local collector on Aphaedo Island, Shinan-gun, where human Gymnophalloides seoi infections are known to be prevalent, were examined for their intestinal helminth parasites. From 2 of 4 cats, a total of 310 adult G. seoi specimens were recovered. Other helminths detected in cats included Heterophyes nocens (1,527 specimens), Pygidiopsis summa (131), Stictodora fuscata (4), Acanthotrema felis (2), Spirometra erinacei (15), toxocarids (4), and a hookworm (1). A raccoon dog was found to be infected with a species of echinostome (55), hookworms (7)

Host sharing and host manipulation by larval helminths in shore crabs: cooperation or conflict?

Larval helminths of different species that share the same intermediate host and are transmitted by predation to the same definitive host may cooperate in their attempts to manipulate the behaviour of the intermediate host, while at the same time having conflicts of interests over the use of host resources. A few studies have indicated that intermediate hosts harbouring larval helminths have altered concentrations of neurotransmitters in their nervous system, and thus measuring levels of neurotransmitters in host brains could serve to assess the respective and combined effect of different helmi

School-based helminthiases control: I. A baseline study of soil-transmitted helminthiases in Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, Thailand.

A baseline study of soil-transmitted helminthiases was carried out in Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, southern Thailand. The study sites were Wat Krou Chou Primary School and nearby villages in Sichon district, and Wat Thang Phoon Primary School and nearby villages in Chalerm Phrakiat District. Surveys of the schoolchildren's stools were conducted by the Kato-Katz technique. The results showed that 23.7% of schoolchildren in Wat Krou Chou and 24.7% of those in Wat Thang Phoon were infected with soil-transmitted helminths, with a 24.1% overall infection rate. The major infection was hookworm (22.

The cost effectiveness of mass drug therapy for intestinal helminths.

This article reviews the principles involved in establishing the cost effectiveness of mass drug therapy for the major intestinal nematodes and the intestinal form of schistosomiasis, as well as the extent to which the available studies have provided definitive answers. For governments or agencies that have decided to introduce a control programme, there is considerable evidence about the comparative cost effectiveness of different types of delivery strategies. For example, mass treatment is more cost effective than selective treatment (treatment after individual screening) in high prevalence

The current status of food-borne parasitic zoonoses in Indonesia.

Only a few food-borne parasitic zoonoses have been reported in Indonesia. The most frequently observed food-borne parasitic diseases are: toxoplasmosis, taeniasis and cysticercosis. Little data are available on other parasitic zoonoses in Indonesia. Taeniasis has been reported in nine provinces. Toxoplasmosis in humans, with prevalence rates ranging from 1 to 60%, has been reported in 12 provinces; in animals, toxoplasmosis is known to occur throughout the country, with serologically positive cases in as many as 75% of animals examined. However, it is expected that other parasitic zoonoses, su

A study on intestinal helminths causing anaemia in man in Cairo.

Haematological and biochemical studies were done for 50 urban and rural Egyptians, from Cairo, suffering from A. duodenale, A. lumbricoides, E. vermicularis, H. nana, S. mansoni and T. saginata. Anaemia of varying degree was noticed in all cases. The lowest Hb% and hematocrit value were found in cases of ancylostomiasis. The blood films of the same patients showed severe hypochromia compared with the other parasitic infections. The highest figure for eosinophilia was found in ancylostomiasis (29%) followed by S. mansoni (14%). Total blood protein was normal in all cases, however, 2 cases of S.
