Intimate Partner Violence in Mid-Adulthood in the United States: Patterns by Sexual Orientation and Sex Assigned at Birth.

INTRODUCTION: Population estimates of the prevalence of intimate partner violence (IPV) victimization and perpetration are limited for sexual minorities in mid-adulthood. METHODS: We examined IPV prevalence estimates, and associations between sexual orientation and self-reported physical and sexual IPV experiences among 10,812 respondents ages 33-43 years who were in a current relationship and participated in Wave V of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health, a population-based US study. We conducted sex-stratified logistic regressions to model associations between sexua

Physical and Mental Health Disparities at the Intersection of Sexual and Gender Minority Statuses: Evidence From Population-Level Data.

Sexual and gender minorities (SGM) experience detriments across many physical and mental health outcomes compared with heterosexual and cisgender people. But little is known about health outcomes for those who are both gender minorities and sexual minorities. Motivated by theories of double disadvantage and leveraging advancements in data collection and measurement, we examine physical and mental health disparities across sexual and gender minority statuses: cisgender heterosexuals, gender minority heterosexuals, cisgender sexual minorities, and people who are both gender and sexual minorities

Questions of faith: Religious affiliations and suicidal ideation among sexual minority young adults.

OBJECTIVE: To examine how the associations of specific religious affiliations with recent suicidal ideation vary by sexual orientation among young adults. METHOD: This project was a cross-sectional secondary analysis of data from the 2006 and 2011 surveys of the National Research Consortium of Counseling Centers in Higher Education. The analytic sample was restricted to persons between the ages of 18-29 (n = 40,150). Multiple logistic regression analyses were used to examine associations of religious affiliations with recent suicidal ideation between heterosexual and sexual minority (e.g., ga

Differences in HIV risk behaviors among people who inject drugs by gender and sexual orientation, San Francisco, 2012.

BACKGROUND: Sharing of drug injection equipment is a well-established risk factor for the transmission of viral infections, such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). However, there are multiple mechanisms through which people who inject drugs (PWID) can acquire and transmit HIV. Differences in drug using and sexual behaviors among heterosexual males, males who have sex with males (MSM), and females who inject drugs may explain health disparities. METHODS: Data were collected in San Francisco by the National HIV Behavioral Surveillance (NHBS) System of PWID in 2012, and were analyzed to comp

[Problems posed by HIV infection in women in tropical zones].

Retroviruses (mainly H.I.V. 1 and H.I.V. 2) are now largely spread over in Central Africa and Caribbean Islands, particularly in large cities. Their transmission is essentially horizontal and mainly sexual. As a matter of fact, sexual transmission is responsible in about 80% of the cases, leaving only a small percentage to transmission by needle (or by any aggressive material), blood or blood by-products. As far as sexual transmission is concerned, it is essentially heterosexual, in spite of the primary epidemic outbreak in the occidental world that focused interest toward male homosexual grou

Behavioral and Clinical Characteristics of Self-Identified Bisexual Men Living with HIV Receiving Medical Care in the United States-Medical Monitoring Project, 2009-2013.

Nationally representative data comparing demographic, risk, and clinical information among bisexual men with other MSM or heterosexuals are lacking. We described differences in demographic characteristics, behaviors, and clinical outcomes among self-identified HIV-positive bisexual, gay, and heterosexual men receiving HIV medical care in the United States. We analyzed data from the 2009-2013 cycles of the Medical Monitoring Project (MMP), a surveillance system that provides nationally representative estimates of behavioral and clinical characteristics of adults with diagnosed HIV in medical ca

Mycoplasma genitalium Infection in Adults Reporting Sexual Contact with Infected Partners, Australia, 2008-2016.

Data on the likelihood of Mycoplasma genitalium infection in sexual contacts, particularly for men who have sex with men (MSM), are needed to form an evidence base for guidelines. We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of patients attending a sexual health clinic in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, during 2008-2016. We calculated the proportion of contacts with M. genitalium infection and determined factors associated with infection. Among those patients reporting sexual contact with an M. genitalium-infected person, 48.2% of women, 31.0% of heterosexual men, and 41.7% of MSM were infected. Am

[HIV in Sweden--more and more part of the world epidemic].

During the years 1997-2001 there were 1213 cases of HIV reported in Sweden. By using a questionnaire sent to respective clinics, additional information was obtained for 1018 patents. The transmission routes were: 28 per cent homosexual, 65 per cent heterosexual, 10 per cent intravenous drug abuse, 1 per cent blood transfusion (none in Sweden) and 6 per cent other/unknown. 61 per cent of men infected by sex with men had contracted their infection in Sweden whilst this was true for 14 per cent of heterosexually infected men and 20 per cent of heterosexually infected women. Instead many with hete

Effect of ano-receptive homosexual practice on T lymphocytes and delayed hypersensitivity in transsexuals.

To determine whether ano-receptive sexual intercourse adversely affects a person's cellular immunity, we compared several immunological parameters among 100 transsexual male prostitutes and 40 heterosexual male controls, and also among different durations of prostitution. The mean ratios of CD-4 (helper/inducer) lymphocytes to CD-8 (suppressor/cytotoxic) lymphocytes and the delayed-type cutaneous hypersensitivity (DTH) scores were significantly lower in transsexuals than they were in heterosexual controls; these parameters also showed a decreasing trend with increasing duration of prostitution

Manifest sadomasochism of males: results of an empirical study.

Two hundred forty-five manifestly sadomasochistic West German completed an anonymous questionnaires concerning their sexual behavior and psychosocial problems. They were reached as placers of sadomasochistic contact advertisements or as members of sadomasochistic clubs. Thirty percent were exclusively heterosexually oriented, 31% bisexually oriented, and 38% homosexually oriented. Results are described with respect to the invisibility of deviant behavior, seeking of partners, participation in the subculture, realization of the deviant desires, self-acceptance, preferences for sadomasochistic r

Violence Against LGB+ people in Brazil: analysis of the 2019 National Survey of Health.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the association between self-reported sexual orientation and violence in the Brazilian population. METHODS: This cross-sectional epidemiological study used the 2019 National Survey of Health database. Total violence and its subtypes (psychological, physical, and sexual) were analyzed in the previous 12 months. Prevalence and odds ratio adjusted for age group were estimated, with their respective 95% confidence intervals, according to the self-reported sexual orientation of the Brazilian population aged 18 years and older. Statistical significance was set at 5%. RESULTS:

The association between sexual orientation, susceptibility to social messages and disordered eating in men.

OBJECTIVE: Much research points to higher levels of disordered eating and more negative body image in gay and bisexual men than in heterosexual men. The reasons for this difference, however, remain unclear. We hypothesized that disturbed body image and eating attitudes in gay and bisexual men would be partially explained by susceptibility to social messages. METHODS: Two hundred and sixty-two men (203 heterosexual, 46 gay and 13 bisexual) between 18 and 35 years of age participated in the study. They completed measures of disordered eating, body image, internalization of attitudes toward appe

Emerging disparity in HIV/AIDS disease progression and mortality for men who have sex with men, Jiangsu Province, China.

Few data exist on HIV disease progression and antiretroviral treatment (ART) impact among men who have sex with men (MSM) in China. Using data from the national case reporting system from 2004 to 2010, we describe changes in CD4 cell count before and after ART initiation, disease progression, and mortality among MSM in Jiangsu province compared with other persons living with HIV/AIDS. Median CD4 cell count among MSM at HIV diagnosis was 432 and decreased rapidly in 12 months to below the level of heterosexuals (slope: MSM -38.0, heterosexuals -15.5, injection drug users [IDU] -8.0, blood donor

High prevalence of non-B HIV-1 subtypes in seamen and their sexual partners in Croatia.

Travel influences the spread of non-B subtypes of HIV in Europe. The aim of this study was to assess whether the spread of non-B subtypes occurred in Croatia, a country with a low level HIV infection. Phylogenetic analysis of the reverse transcriptase and protease genes was undertaken in 145 Croatian patients with the following risks for HIV-infection: men who have sex with men (n = 64), heterosexual contact (n = 54), intravenous drug use (n = 21), bisexual contact (n = 4) and intravenous drug use plus heterosexual exposure (n = 2). The sample included 25 seamen and 13 steady female sexual par

Sexual identity differences in ideal cardiovascular health among cisgender adults in the All of Us Research Program.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular health (CVH) disparities have been documented among sexual minority adults, yet prior research has focused on individual CVH metrics. We sought to examine sexual identity differences in CVH using the American Heart Association's composite measure of ideal CVH, which provides a more comprehensive assessment of future CVD risk. METHODS: Data from the All of Us Research Program were analyzed. Sexual identity was categorized as heterosexual, gay/lesbian, bisexual, or other. Individual CVH health metrics and cumulative ideal CVH (range 0-100) were assessed. We ran sex-st

Intersectional Immunity? Examining How Race/Ethnicity and Sexual Orientation Combine to Shape Influenza Vaccination Among US Adults.

Influenza vaccination is a critical preventive healthcare behavior designed to prevent spread of seasonal flu. This paper contributes to existing scholarship by applying an intersectional perspective to examine how influenza vaccination differs across specific intersections of racial/ethnic and sexual identity. Drawing on aggregated state-level data from Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) from 2011 to 2020, I examine how flu vaccination differs across 18 racial/ethnic-by-sexual orientation groups (N = 1,986,432). Findings from descriptive analyses and logistic regression modeli

Age-related patterns of cocaine and methamphetamine use across the life course in the United States: Disparities by gender and sexual identity among adults.

PURPOSE: Research showing substance use decreases over the life course has focused primarily on heterosexual adults. We examined how age-related patterns of cocaine and methamphetamine use vary by sexual identity and gender among a national sample. METHODS: We included 191,954 adults aged 18-64 from the 2015-2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health. We described the weighted prevalence of past-year cocaine and methamphetamine use and used logistic regressions to estimate relative odds of past-year cocaine and methamphetamine use by age, stratified by gender and sexual identity (heterosexua

Sexual orientation and benign breast disease in a cohort of U.S. women.

PURPOSE: Several studies indicate that sexual minority (e.g., bisexual, lesbian) women may be at an increased risk for breast cancer. However, we know little about how risk factors, such as benign breast disease (BBD)-which can confer nearly a fourfold breast cancer risk increase-may vary across sexual orientation groups. METHODS: Among Nurses' Health Study II participants followed from 1989 to 2013 (n = 99,656), we investigated whether bisexual and lesbian women were more likely than heterosexual women to have breast cancer risk factors including a BBD diagnosis (self-reported biopsy or aspi
