Optimal design-for-control of self-cleaning water distribution networks using a convex multi-start algorithm.

The provision of self-cleaning velocities has been shown to reduce the risk of discolouration in water distribution networks (WDNs). Despite these findings, control implementations continue to be focused primarily on pressure and leakage management. This paper considers the control of diurnal flow velocities to maximize the self-cleaning capacity (SCC) of WDNs. We formulate a new optimal design-for-control problem where locations and operational settings of pressure control and automatic flushing valves are jointly optimized. The problem formulation includes a nonconvex objective function, non

Do artificial neural networks love sex? How the combination of artificial neural networks with evolutionary algorithms may help to identify gender influence in rheumatic diseases.

Although medical research has been performed predominantly on men both in preclinical and clinical studies, continuous efforts have been made to overcome this gender bias. Examining retrospectively 21 data sets containing sex as one of the descriptive variables, it was possible to verify how many times our AI protocol decided to keep gender information in the predictive model. The data sets pertained a vast array of diseases such as dyspeptic syndrome, atrophic gastritis, venous thrombosis, gastroesophageal reflux disease, irritable bowel syndrome, Alzheimer diseases and mild cognitive impairm

Complex Persistent Opioid Dependence-an Opioid-induced Chronic Pain Syndrome.

Long-term opioid therapy (LTOT) for chronic cancer and non-cancer pain is commonly ineffective in providing its stated goal of improving function through good control of pain. Opioid tapering (slow dose reduction and/or discontinuation), the logical solution, also appears to be ineffective among many patients on LTOT as it often leads to even worse pain control and function, leaving the patients and providers managing LTOT in a clinical conundrum with little treatment choices. Complex persistent opioid dependence (CPOD) was recently offered as a heuristic to explain this clinical conundrum exe

Evidence for a dual-process account of over-imitation: Children imitate anti- and prosocial models equally, but prefer prosocial models once they become aware of multiple solutions to a task.

Children imitate actions that are perceivably unnecessary to achieve the instrumental goal of an action sequence, a behavior termed over-imitation. It is debated whether this behavior is based on the motivation to follow behavioral norms and affiliate with the model or whether it can be interpreted in terms of a behavioral heuristic to copy observed intentional actions without questioning the purpose of each action step. To resolve this question, we tested whether preschool-aged children (N = 89) over-imitate a prosocial model, a helper in a prior third-party moral transgression, but refuse to

A New Fractional Particle Swarm Optimization with Entropy Diversity Based Velocity for Reactive Power Planning.

Optimal Reactive Power Dispatch (ORPD) is the vital concern of network operators in the planning and management of electrical systems to reduce the real and reactive losses of the transmission and distribution system in order to augment the overall efficiency of the electrical network. The principle objective of the ORPD problem is to explore the best setting of decision variables such as rating of the shunt capacitors, output voltage of the generators and tap setting of the transformers in order to diminish the line loss, and improve the voltage profile index (VPI) and operating cost minimiza

Cortical and subcortical response to the anticipation of reward in high and average/low risk-taking adolescents.

Since the first neurodevelopmental models that sought to explain the influx of risky behaviors during adolescence were proposed, there have been a number of revisions, variations and criticisms. Despite providing a strong multi-disciplinary heuristic to explain the development of risk behavior, extant models have not yet reliably isolated neural systems that underlie risk behaviors in adolescence. To address this gap, we screened 2017 adolescents from an ongoing longitudinal study that assessed 15-health risk behaviors, targeting 104 adolescents (Age Range: 17-to-21.4), characterized as high-o

Treatment Motivations and Expectations in Patients with Actinic Keratosis: A German-Wide Multicenter, Cross-Sectional Trial.

Patient-centered motives and expectations of the treatment of actinic keratoses (AK) have received little attention until now. Hence, we aimed to profile and cluster treatment motivations and expectations among patients with AK in a nationwide multicenter, cross-sectional study including patients from 14 German skin cancer centers. Patients were asked to complete a self-administered questionnaire. Treatment motives and expectations towards AK management were measured on a visual analogue scale from 1-10. Specific patient profiles were investigated with subgroup and correlation analysis. Overal

Factors Influencing Inpatient Insulin Management of Adults With Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes by Residents and Medical Students.

OBJECTIVES: The day-to-day management of diabetes is often the responsibility of resident physicians in teaching hospitals, yet studies have consistently shown that learners lack confidence and knowledge of inpatient insulin titration. We sought to elucidate factors that influence inpatient management of diabetes by medical learners. We predicted that there would be conscious and unconscious variables at play, and we sought to determine the process by which learners arrived at insulin titration decisions. METHODS: We administered a survey using a hypothetical case based on script concordance

The neurophysiology of hyperarousal in restless legs syndrome: Hints for a role of glutamate/GABA.

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a common sensory-motor circadian disorder, whose basic components include urge to move the legs, unpleasant sensory experience, and periodic leg movements during sleep, all associated with an enhancement of the individual's arousal state. Brain iron deficiency (BID) is considered to be a key initial pathobiological factor, based on alterations of iron acquisition by the brain, also moderated by genetic factors. In addition to the well-known dopaminergic involvement in RLS, previous studies pointed out that BID brings also a hyperglutamatergic state that influenc

Functional connectivity in ruminants: A generalized state-dependent modelling approach.

Animal behaviour is increasingly seen as an important component in maintaining functional connectivity between patches in fragmented landscapes. However, models that explicitly incorporate behavioural trade-offs are rarely applied to landscape planning problems like connectivity. The aim of this study was to explore how state-dependent behaviour influenced functional connectivity between patches from a theoretical perspective. We investigated how inter-patch distances influenced functional connectivity using a dynamic state variable model framework. The decision making process of an individual

Exploiting risk-reward structures in decision making under uncertainty.

People often have to make decisions under uncertainty-that is, in situations where the probabilities of obtaining a payoff are unknown or at least difficult to ascertain. One solution to this problem is to infer the probability from the magnitude of the potential payoff and thus exploit the inverse relationship between payoffs and probabilities that occurs in many domains in the environment. Here, we investigated how the mind may implement such a solution: (1) Do people learn about risk-reward relationships from the environment-and if so, how? (2) How do learned risk-reward relationships impac

Jacobi Fiber Surfaces for Bivariate Reeb Space Computation.

This paper presents an efficient algorithm for the computation of the Reeb space of an input bivariate piecewise linear scalar function f defined on a tetrahedral mesh. By extending and generalizing algorithmic concepts from the univariate case to the bivariate one, we report the first practical, output-sensitive algorithm for the exact computation of such a Reeb space. The algorithm starts by identifying the Jacobi set of f, the bivariate analogs of critical points in the univariate case. Next, the Reeb space is computed by segmenting the input mesh along the new notion of Jacobi Fiber Surfac

Impairment measures versus inflammatory RODS in GBS and CIDP: a responsiveness comparison.

This study aimed to 'define responder' through the concept of minimum clinically important differences using the individually obtained standard errors (MCID-SE) and a heuristic 'external criterion' responsiveness method in patients with Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) and chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (CIDP). One hundred and fourteen newly diagnosed or relapsing patients (GBS: 55, CIDP: 59) were serially examined (1-year follow-up). The inflammatory Rasch-built overall disability scale (I-RODS), Rasch-transformed MRC sum score (RT-MRC), and Rasch-transformed modified-

Colon centerline extraction in fragmented segmentations.

In virtual colonoscopy, the clinical need is a smooth centered path from the rectum to the cecum, for interactive navigation along the colonic lumen. The primary challenge is breakages in the colon, due to fecal residue, abnormalities, poor insufflation and inadequate electronic cleansing. Here we propose a method, that is a modification of the classic energy minimized geodesic, that extracts centered paths through fragmented colons. To begin, we perform electronic cleansing, automatically localize 4 points: rectum, cecum, sphlenic and hepatic flexures; followed by region growing and heuristic

Biopsychosocial typologies of pain in a cohort of patients with systemic sclerosis.

OBJECTIVE: Despite being a common problem in systemic sclerosis (SSc; scleroderma), the extant literature on pain has primarily focused on biomedical correlates, or bivariate relationships with a few psychological characteristics. There is a need to investigate the more heuristic biopsychosocial model, which incorporates the simultaneous contributions of medical, psychological, and social variables in understanding pain. METHODS: Patients with SSc (n = 333) received clinical examinations and completed self-report surveys at enrollment in the Genetics versus Environment in Scleroderma Outcome

Theoretical and practical considerations behind the use of laboratory animals for the study of Tourette syndrome.

In the present manuscript we review a substantial body of literature describing several pre-clinical animal models designed and developed with the purpose of investigating the biological determinants of Tourette syndrome (TS). In order to map the animal models onto the theoretical background upon which they have been devised, we first define phenomenological and etiological aspects of TS and then match this information to the available pre-clinical models. Thus, we first describe the characteristic symptoms exhibited by TS patients and then a series of hypotheses attempting to identify the mul

Anxiety disorders in bipolar I mania: prevalence, effect on illness severity, and treatment implications.

BACKGROUND: Comorbidity in bipolar disorder (BP) is common, of which anxiety disorder (AD) comorbidity has received recent attention. The aim of the present study was to find the prevalence of (current and lifetime) ADs in BP I with recent episode mania, its effect on illness severity and its treatment implications. This is unlike the convention of associating "anxiety" with depression. Here, the hierarchical diagnostic criterion of the DSM IV-TR was suspended for heuristic purpose. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Consecutively admitted 102 consenting in-patients of bipolar mania were evaluated on You

A review of Atypical depression in relation to the course of depression and changes in HPA axis organization.

Depression is a clinically heterogenous condition defined by sub-types that can have diametrically opposed features, such as sleep and appetite. Within the same individual these features may change over time, and different symptom clusters may respond selectively to different treatments. It has been hypothesized that different pathophysiological processes may be operating in the different sub-types of depression and specifically that Melancholic depression may be associated with relative overactivity, and Atypical depression with relative hypoactivity, of the hypothalamic drive of the HPA axis

A method for computing an inventory of metazoan mitochondrial gene order rearrangements.

BACKGROUND: Changes in the order of mitochondrial genes are a good source of information for phylogenetic investigations. Phylogenetic hypotheses are often supported by parsimonious mitochondrial gene order rearrangement scenarios. CREx is a heuristic for computing short pairwise rearrangement scenarios for metazoan mitochondrial gene orders. Different from other methods, CREx considers four types of rearrangement operations: inversions, transpositions, inverse transpositions, and tandem duplication random loss operations. RESULTS: An extensive analysis of the CREx reconstructions for artific
