Transforming schools of social work into spaces of social action: a critical exploration of Project Interaction, The Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Two-Spirit Initiative of McGill University's School of Social Work.

This article examines the question of how universities can be encouraged to address the mental health concerns of GLBT-SQ people and communities from a perspective of solidarity. In so doing, the authors take a case study approach, using Project Interaction: The Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Two-Spirit Initiative of McGill University's School of Social Work, to critically reflect upon the challenges arising from the development of an alternative organization within academia. The purpose of this reflection is to highlight how normal operations at work on university campuses, and within health and

Trends in gonorrhoea in nine western European countries, 1991-6. European Study Group.

OBJECTIVE: To present, describe, and assess trends in gonorrhoea in western Europe between 1991 and 1996. METHODS: A European Union concerted action was initiated in 1990 to monitor the prevalence of HIV among patients with a sexually transmitted infection in sentinel networks in western Europe. Data from this concerted action were used to assess trends in gonorrhoea between 1991 and 1996. Where possible, the trends were validated by comparing them with national laboratory reports or data from more extensive sexually transmitted infection surveillance networks. RESULTS: 7192 episodes of gono

"I only read about myself on bathroom walls": the need for research on the mental health of lesbians and gay men.

The very recent history of pathologizing homosexuality still has a strong impact on the public in general and mental health professionals in particular. In contrast to the early research on sexual reorientation of lesbians and gay men, there is relatively little empirical research on the mental health issues of lesbians and gay men. Whether researchers choose to define sexual orientation by sexual behavior, self-definition, or membership in lesbian and gay community groups will have an impact on the results. Research on mental health issues that include lesbians, gay men, and heterosexual wome

Homosexually acquired gonorrhoea in Victoria, 1983-1991.

OBJECTIVE: To identify trends in the rate of gonorrhoea, particularly homosexually acquired infection. DESIGN: A retrospective descriptive study of records stored in a relational database. Records contain epidemiological, demographic and microbiological data of laboratory confirmed cases of gonorrhoea. SUBJECTS: Individuals with gonorrhoea diagnosed microbiologically in Victoria and from whom isolates were subsequently forwarded to the Microbiological Diagnostic Unit, University of Melbourne, for further bacteriological work for the years 1983-1991. RESULTS: Overall, gonorrhoea is declining

Neurobiology and sexual orientation: current relationships.

Despite great progress in the neurosciences, our understanding of the determinants of sexual orientation is incomplete. The authors review for the clinician/neuropsychiatrist studies pertaining to the formation of sexual orientation in the following areas: hormone effects on sexual behavior (animal and human); the complicated relationship between gender identity, gender role, and sexual orientation in humans; cross-cultural studies of homosexuality; behavioral observations in pseudohermaphrodites and offspring of mothers treated with hormones during pregnancy; brain studies of homosexual and h

Opposite sex behaviours correlate with degree of homosexual feelings in the predominantly heterosexual.

There is extensive evidence that subjects who identify as homosexual show opposite sex-linked behaviours. However no attempt has been made to investigate whether a similar association exists between such behaviours and the presence of homosexual feelings in the predominantly heterosexual. Eighty medical students completed an anonymous questionnaire reporting the ratio of their heterosexual to homosexual feelings and the presence of sex-linked behaviours in their earlier life and currently. As in previous studies correlations between opposite sex behaviours and subjects' degree of homosexual fe

Ectoparasites and endoparasites in sexually transmitted diseases.

A number of protozoan organisms, both ectoparasitic and endoparasitic, may be related to sexual activity. The broad range of clinical presentations makes this group of diseases challenging to diagnose. Patients may present with skin, genital, gastroenterologic, pulmonary, or neurologic symptoms, or may be asymptomatic. A careful history, including specific sexual history, with appropriate laboratory evaluation will aid the primary care physician in making the correct diagnosis and thus supply the correct treatment. Awareness that infection with multiple organisms is frequent in some population

Female genital self-mutilation: case reports and literature review.

Three cases are reported that demonstrate the variety of clinical conditions in which female genital self-mutilation may be found. The most common variety appears to be the habitually self-harming individual with a severe personality disorder. One of the cases reported, however, is a woman with a delusional disorder whose body image distortions led her to ablate one of her labia majora. The three cases presented are discussed in the context of the eight cases previously reported of genital self-mutilation found in women.

The gender identity movement: a growing surgical-psychiatric liaison.

The evaluation and treatment of individuals with gender identity problems has resulted in an interesting and productive collaboration between several specialties of medicine. In particular, the psychiatrist and surgeon have joined hands in the management of these fascinating patients who feel they are trapped in the wrong body and insist upon correcting this cruel mistake of nature by undergoing sex reassignment surgery. Over the last two decades, some 40 centers have emerged in which interdisciplinary teams cooperate in the evaluation and treatment of these gender dysphoric patients. The mode

Gonorrhoea in the asymptomatic patient: presentation and the role of contact tracing for heterosexual men and women and for homosexual men.

Clinically silent gonorrhoea is the major problem in the control of the disease. Only 12 per cent of infected women reported in 1974 because of symptoms, compared with 97 per cent of infected heterosexual men and only 35 per cent of homosexual men with gonococcal proctitis alone. Homosexual men, compared with heterosexual men, had twice as many subsequent sexual contacts after infection and had a higher incidence of early syphilis. Eighty-four per cent had experienced passive anorectal intercourse. Ninety-seven per cent of men with gonococcal urethritis reported because of symptoms, but occasi

Perceptions of LGBQ+ youth and experts of suicide prevention video messages targeting LGBQ+ youth: qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Young lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer as well as other sexual/gender minorities (LGBTQ+) persons have higher rates of suicidal ideation and behavior compared to their non-LGBTQ+ peers, particularly during their coming out. The "It Gets Better" project is a multi-national media campaign that aims to reduce suicide among LGBTQ+ adolescents by providing personal narratives of hope delivered by mainly adult LGBTQ+ persons. There is only little knowledge so far on how young LGBTQ+ people as well as experts in suicide prevention and counseling perceive these videos, and how to

Dimensions of sexual orientation and the prevalence of mood and anxiety disorders in the United States.

OBJECTIVES: We used data from a nationally representative sample to examine the associations among 3 dimensions of sexual orientation (identity, attraction, and behavior), lifetime and past-year mood and anxiety disorders, and sex. METHODS: We analyzed data from wave 2 of the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions. RESULTS: Mental health outcomes differed by sex, dimension of sexual orientation, and sexual minority group. Whereas a lesbian, gay, or bisexual identity was associated with higher odds of any mood or anxiety disorder for both men and women, women reportin
