A new combination and a new species of onchobothriid tapeworm are described from triakid sharks. We found Platybothrium xiamenensis Wang & Yang, 2001 and Erudituncus musteli (Yamaguti, 1952) from Hemitriakis japanica (Müller & Henle). Based on the morphology of the hooks P. xiamenensis is transferred to the genus Erudituncus Healy, Scholz & Caira, 2001. The specimens studied by us differ from the original description in the number of proglottids and testes and in the size of the cirrus-sac. However, we consider them conspecific with E. xiamenensis due to the consistent hook morphology and laci

BACKGROUND: Emerging bacterial zoonoses in bats and rodents remain relatively understudied. We conduct the first comparative host-pathogen coevolutionary analyses of bacterial pathogens in these hosts, using Bartonella spp. and Leptospira spp. as a model.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We used published genetic data for 51 Bartonella genotypes from 24 bat species, 129 Bartonella from 38 rodents, and 26 Leptospira from 20 bats. We generated maximum likelihood and Bayesian phylogenies for hosts and bacteria, and tested for coevoutionary congruence using programs ParaFit, PACO, and Jane. Barton

The data on species diversity of trematodes from bats collected in the Middle Volga Region are summarized. According to original and literar … ies were revealed in 8 and 7 bat species, respectively. Trematodes of bats possess a high degree of host specificity. 17 species parasitize exclusively in bats out of 20 parasite species registered for the order Chiroptera. Only 3 species (Plagiorchis elegans, P. vespertilionis, and Prosthodendrium chilostomum) show wide degree of specificity, being found in other …

In the New World, the avian order Passeriformes comprises 47 families and 2,453 species, yet to date only 21 (45%) of the families and 58 (2%) of the species have been examined for coccidia, and from these only two species of Eimeria Schneider, 1875 and 81 species of Isospora Schneider, 1881 have been described. This review contributes to our understanding of the morphology and systematics of coccidian parasites of passeriforms, providing a scientific basis for the identification of sporulated oöcysts recovered from the faeces of passerine birds from North, Central and South America. Recent progress in sequencing the genomes of several Leishmania species, causative agents of cutaneous, mucocutaneous and visceral leishmaniasis, is revealing unusual features of potential relevance to parasite virulence and pathogenesis in the host. While the genomes of Leishmania major, Leishmania braziliensis and Leishmania infantum are highly similar in content and organisation, species-specific genes and mechanisms distinguish one from another. In particular, the presence of retrotransposons and the components of a putative RNA interference machinery in L. braziliensis suggest the potenti

We describe a case history of larval Hannemania sp. (Acari: Trombiculidae) infestations in two spadefoot toads (Spea spp. Anura: Pelobatidae) captured from playa wetlands in the Southern High Plains, Texas. Hannemania sp. larvae were superficially attached to the skin, not encysted, and dermal changes were not observed. Gross field examinations revealed a presumed occurrence of Hannemania sp. in Spea spp. at four of 24 wetlands in 2003 and 2004. Although other species of amphibians were present (Ambystoma tigrinum mavortium, Bufo cognatus, Bufo debilis insidior, Pseudacris clarkii, Gastrophryn

There has been continued controversy on the taxonomy of Ascaris lumbricoides Linnaeus, 1758 from humans and Ascaris suum Goeze, 1782 from pigs. This article reviews a range of comparative studies related to host susceptibility, morphology, karyotype, immunology and biochemistry, as well as molecular genetics in recent years.

Phylogeny is fundamental as it constrains explanations about history and forms our foundation for recognizing and diagnosing species. In the absence of such a framework taxonomists historically relied on intuitive processes, personal judgment and authority, often embracing a typological view of species that disregarded otherwise unequivocal historical and biological criteria. Species of Taenia are among the most characteristic tapeworms infecting carnivores and humans as definitive hosts and indeed Taeniidae is unique among the Eucestoda in requiring 2 obligate mammalian hosts for transmission

The outcome of coevolutionary interactions is predicted to vary across landscapes depending on local conditions and levels of gene flow, with some populations evolving more extreme specializations than others. Using a globally distributed parasite of colonial seabirds, the tick Ixodes uriae, we examined how host availability and geographic isolation influences this process. In particular, we sampled ticks from 30 populations of six different seabird host species, three in the Southern Hemisphere and three in the Northern Hemisphere. We show that parasite races have evolved independently on hos

Experimental infections of Galba truncatula with Fasciola gigantica or F. hepatica were carried out under laboratory conditions (20 degrees C) to determine the characteristics of rediae of both species via their morphometry and to find reliable measurements that might be efficiently used to discriminate between the rediae of both species of Fasciola. These results were compared to those of another snail: Radix natalensis, infected with either F. gigantica or F. hepatica under the same protocol. At day 28 post-exposure, abortive infections with F. hepatica were found in a group of R. natalensis

An average of 4.9 tapeworms were discovered on day 7 of a low-abundance H. diminuta infection of rats of race WAG alb. After 11 months, the mean was only relatively slightly lower at 3.6. These means represent 97.1 and 71.4% of the 5 cysticercoids supplied. In turn, 7 days and 11 months after rats were supplied with 110 cysticercoids, the respective percent-ages were 85.1 and 56.0. All 7- and 12-day tapeworms from the low-abundance and crowded infrapopulations were characterized by the presence of a terminal proglottid of lingulate shape, in which the excretory canals joined. With an improved technique, quantitative inoculation of Brugia malayi microfilariae (mff) into Anopheles sinensis and Culex quinquefasciatus was carried out in our laboratory in 1988. The development of B. malayi mff in these two species of mosquitoes was observed. In the system of B. malayi and An. sinensis, a well-fitted linear correlation appeared between the number of mff inoculated and the infective larva (L3) positive rate (r = 0.9910; P less than 0.01). The regression equation with the regression coefficient of 8.490 suggested a high susceptibility of this species of mosquito to B. mala

Seasonal influenza in humans is predominantly caused by influenza A virus (IAV) and influenza B virus (IBV), but they differ markedly in host range, evolutionary dynamics, and pandemic potential. Such phenotypic divergence reflects the distinct molecular strategies employed by the two viruses at key stages of their life cycles. Hemagglutinin (HA) of IAV possesses prominent structural plasticity, which endows it with the capacity to recognize both avian-type α2,3-linked and human-type α2,6-linked sialic acid receptors, and the function of IAV polymerase is highly dependent on host acidic nuclea

Chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection affects more than 250 million people worldwide and markedly increases the risk of terminal liver diseases, including liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Despite its global impact, HBV exhibits a remarkably narrow host range, with natural infection largely restricted to humans and chimpanzees. This stringent tropism has posed a major barrier to the development of experimentally tractable in vivo models and has limited our ability to study viral persistence, pathogenesis, and immune control. Over the past decades, substantial progress has been

The introduction of Echinococcus to Australia over 200 years ago and its establishment in sheep rearing areas of the country inflicted a serious medical and economic burden on the country. This resulted in an investment in both basic and applied research aimed at learning more about the biology and life cycle of Echinococcus. This research served to illustrate the uniqueness of the parasite in terms of developmental biology and ecology, and the value of Echinococcus as a model system in a broad range of research, from fundamental biology to theoretical control systems. These studies formed the

Lymphatic filariasis is a mafor tropical disease affecting approximately 120 million people worldwide. Patent infection, by and large, is clinically asymptomatic but is associated with the inability of T cells to proliferate or produce IFN-γ in response to parasite antigen. Monocyte dysfunction is one hypothesis felt to explain the lack of an antigen-specific T cell response. In fact, monocytes from filaria-infected individuals have been shown to be studded with internalized filarial antigens. Understanding how the phenotype and the function of these monocytes are altered through the internali

A high prevalence of Brucellapinnipedialis serology and bacteriology positive animals has been found in the Northeast Atlantic stock of hooded seal (Cystophoracristata); however no associated gross pathological changes have been identified. Marine mammal brucellae have previously displayed different infection patterns in human and murine macrophages. To investigate if marine mammal Brucella spp. are able to invade and multiply in cells originating from a presumed host species, we infected alveolar macrophages from hooded seal with a B. pinnipedialis hooded seal isolate. Avian Tembusu virus (TMUV) is a newly emerging avian pathogenic flavivirus in China and Southeast Asia with features of rapid spread, an expanding host range, and cross-species transmission. The mechanisms of its infection and pathogenesis remain largely unclear. Here, we investigated the tropism of this arbovirus in peripheral blood mononuclear cells of specific-pathogen-free (SPF) ducks and SPF chickens and identified monocytes/macrophages as the key targets of TMUV infection. In vivo studies in SPF ducks and SPF chickens with monocyte/macrophage clearance demonstrated that the infection of

Protozoan parasites have evolved diverse growth and metabolic strategies for surviving and proliferating within different extracellular and intracellular niches in their mammalian hosts. Metabolomic approaches, including high coverage metabolite profiling and (13)C/(2)H-stable isotope labeling, are increasingly being used to identify parasite metabolic pathways that are important for survival and replication in vivo. These approaches are highlighting new links between parasite carbon metabolism and the ability of different parasite stages to colonize specific niches or host cell types. They ha

Nutrients are essential to the human host and to its invading pathogens. The purpose of this International Nutrition Council symposium on Micronutrient Regulation of Host-Pathogen Interactions held at Experimental Biology 2006 was to examine new knowledge about the mechanisms by which certain limiting micronutrients can mediate the balance of power between the human host and its numerous potential pathogens. In this introductory article, we briefly review how competition for nutrients is critical to the survival of both host and pathogen and describe some of the evolved mechanisms by which eac
