Parkinson disease (PD) psychosis (PDP) is a spectrum of illusions, hallucinations and delusions that are associated with PD throughout its disease course. Psychotic phenomena can manifest from the earliest stages of PD and might follow a continuum from minor hallucinations to structured hallucinations and delusions. Initially, PDP was considered to be a complication associated with dopaminergic drug use. However, subsequent research has provided evidence that PDP arises from the progression of brain alterations caused by PD itself, coupled with the use of dopaminergic drugs. The combined dysfu…

BACKGROUND: Recent evidence supports the use of immersive virtual reality (VR) as a means of delivering bodily illusions that may have therapeutic potential for the treatment of musculoskeletal conditions. We wanted to investigate whether a single session of an embodiment-based immersive VR training program influences pain-free range of motion in patients with shoulder pain.
METHODS: We designed a rehabilitation program based on developing ownership over a virtual body and then "exercising" the upper limb in immersive VR, while the real arm remains static. We then carried out a single-arm pre…

Our sensory system is able to build a unified perception of the world, which although rich, is limited and inaccurate. Sometimes, features f … veral frequency bands to feature integration. BACKGROUND: Motorist Disorientation Syndrome (MDS) is a term used to describe patients who primarily experience symptoms of dizziness/disorientation whilst in a motor car [21]. There is uncertainty about the relevance of vestibular dysfunction and whether this disorder could instead be a visually induced dizziness (VV) or part of a functional disorder similar to Persistent postural perceptual dizziness (PPPD).
OBJECTIVE: We present the largest case-series to date of patients whose main complaint is of illusions of movement of self/vehicle when driving, characterising features of this group.

Whether a visual stimulus seems near or far away depends partly on its vertical elevation. Contrasting theories suggest either that percepti … wing that online multisensory signals, and not only stored information, contribute to such distance illusions. Our results support the gravity theory of depth perception, and show that vestibular signals make an on-line contribution to the perception of effort, and thus of distance.

Schizotypal personality disorder (SPD) is characterised by thought disorders, experiences of illusions, obsessive ruminations, bizarre or eccentric behaviour, cognitive problems and deficits in social functioning - symptoms that SPD shares with schizophrenia. Efforts have been undertaken to investigate the relationship between these conditions regarding genetics, pathophysiology, and phenomenology. However, treatment of SPD with antipsychotics has received less scientific attention. Embase and PubMed databases were searched using all known generic names of antipsychotics as search terms in com…

RESULTS: Hallucinations and illusions frequently occurred in both diseases. Unimodal hallucinations were more common in schizophrenia (p = 6.30e-07) and multimodal hallucinations in NT1, but no clear difference was identified in their sensory modality. Hypnagogic/hypnopompic hallucinati …

BACKGROUND: Very few studies have evaluated the level of distress due to the experience of delirium in patients who have recovered from deli … g strange (n = 7). Other experiences which were recollected were those of visual hallucinations and illusions.
CONCLUSION: Overall experience of delirium is distressing for the patients. Most of the patients (those who remembered or who were not able to remember) experienced at least moderate level of distress.

When designing a haptic interface, simplicity is crucial to avoid negative effects caused by excessive weight and complexity. Using multimodal information, haptic illusions, and providing context are known to create simpler interfaces. We have previously proposed the use of single overlapped vibrotactile stimulation (SOVS) for presenting spatiotemporal tactile perception, a method that simultaneously presents overlapped waveforms to multiple body parts. There, the acceleration measured from a person dribbling a basketball with an accelerometer positioned on the index finger and the floor was o…

The sense of body ownership (i.e. the feeling that our body or its parts belong to us) plays a key role in bodily self-consciousness and is believed to stem from multisensory integration. Experimental paradigms such as the rubber hand illusion have been developed to allow the controlled manipulation of body ownership in laboratory settings, providing effective tools for investigating malleability in the sense of body ownership and the boundaries that distinguish self from other. Neuroimaging studies of body ownership converge on the involvement of several cortical regions, including the premot

The subjective temporal order of tactile stimuli, delivered sequentially to each hand with an interval of 100-300 ms, is often inverted when the arms are crossed. Based on data from behavioral and neuroimaging studies, it has been proposed that the reversal is due to a conflict between anatomical and spatial representations of the tactile signal or to the production of an inverted apparent motion signal. Because the α rhythms, which consist of a few distinct components, reportedly modulate tactile perception and apparent motion and serve as a 10 Hz timer, we hypothesized that the illusory reve

The research considers the influence of choice (the possibility for the player to choose a gamble or another) and involvement (the physical interaction with the gambling device) on risk taking in gambling games and whether this influence is mediated by illusory control over the outcome of the gamble. Results of a laboratory experiment (n = 100) show that (a) although choice does increase illusory control, this influence does not translate in increased risk taking, and (b) whilst involvement does increase risk taking, this effect is not mediated by illusory control. These results are discussed

Stimuli were presented that consisted of a stationary row of black-bordered white rectangles. As observers watched, each rectangle in turn from left to right changed from white to black. The final rectangle did not change colour but moved off from left to right. The sequential colour change suggested motion from left to right, and observers reliably reported a visual impression that this illusory motion kicked or bumped the last rectangle, thereby making it move. The impression was stronger when the sequential colour change was faster, but was not significantly affected by the number of the re

When two stationary visual objects appear in alternating sequence, they evoke the perception of a single object moving back and forth between them. This is known as stroboscopic or apparent motion and forms the basis of perceived continuity in, for example, motion pictures. When the spatiotemporal separation between the inducing objects is optimal, the subjective appearance of apparent motion is nearly indistinguishable from that of real motion. Here we report that the detection and identification of a simple visual form in the path of apparent motion is impaired by the illusory perception of

EEG and MEG were simultaneously recorded to study the visual gamma-band (30-70 Hz) responses. The electrical gamma-band response phase-locked to stimulus onset can be subdivided into a central component at 39 Hz and an occipital component at 36 Hz. A new high-frequency magnetic phase-locked response recorded over the occipital lobe is described. Its topography is complex and probably reflects the activity of multiple sources. Both electrical and magnetic high-frequency responses differ in topography from the low-frequency responses in the same latency range, suggesting that at least partially

Sensory "aftereffects" are a subgroup of sensory illusions that can be defined as an illusory phenomenon triggered after prolonged exposure to a given sensory inducer. These phenomena are interesting because they can provide insights into the mechanisms of perception. In auditory modality, there is a special interest in the so-called "Zwicker tone" (ZT), an auditory aftereffect triggered after the presentation of a notched noise (NN, broadband noise with a missing frequency band). The ZT has been considered a plausible model of a specific tinnitus subtype since it presents some key characteris…
