Diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease via optimized lightweight convolution-attention and structural MRI.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) poses a substantial public health challenge, demanding accurate screening and diagnosis. Identifying AD in its early stages, including mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and healthy control (HC), is crucial given the global aging population. Structural magnetic resonance imaging (sMRI) is essential for understanding the brain's structural changes due to atrophy. While current deep learning networks overlook voxel long-term dependencies, vision transformers (ViT) excel at recognizing such dependencies in images, making them valuable in AD diagnosis. Our proposed method int

Quantitative susceptibility mapping versus phase imaging to identify multiple sclerosis iron rim lesions with demyelination.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: To compare quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) and high-pass-filtered (HPF) phase imaging for (1) identifying chronic active rim lesions with more myelin damage and (2) distinguishing patients with increased clinical disability in multiple sclerosis. METHODS: Eighty patients were scanned with QSM for paramagnetic rim detection and Fast Acquisition with Spiral Trajectory and T2prep for myelin water fraction (MWF). Chronic lesions were classified based on the presence/absence of rim on HPF and QSM images. A lesion-level linear mixed-effects model with MWF as the ou

Characteristic patterns of white matter tract injury in sport-related concussion: An image based meta-analysis.

Sports-related concussion (SRC) is sustained by millions of people per year, yet the spatiotemporal patterns of white matter (WM) injury remain poorly understood. Several SRC studies have implemented the standardised approach Tract-Based Spatial Statistics (TBSS). The aim of this image-based meta-analysis was to identify consensus patterns of SRC-related WM injury across TBSS studies. We included studies comparing the diffusion MRI measurement fractional anisotropy (FA) in SRC or subconcussive injury vs. controls using TBSS, as FA is the most frequently examined diffusion tensor imaging metric

Practical Guide to Evaluating Myocardial Disease by Cardiac MRI.

OBJECTIVE. A spectrum of pathophysiologic mechanisms can lead to the development of myocardial disorders including ischemia, genetic abnormalities, and systemic disorders. Cardiac MRI identifies different myocardial disorders, provides prognostic information, and directs therapy. In comparison with other imaging modalities, cardiac MRI has the advantage of allowing both functional assessment and tissues characterization in a single examination without the use of ionizing radiation. Newer cardiac MRI techniques including mapping can provide additional information about myocardial disease that m

Apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) histogram analysis: differentiation of benign from malignant parotid gland tumors using readout-segmented diffusion-weighted imaging.

OBJECTIVES: To explore the utility of whole-lesion apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) histogram analysis for differentiating parotid gland tumors following readout-segmented diffusion-weighted imaging (RESOLVE). METHODS: 80 patients (40 with pleomorphic adenomas, 14 with Warthin tumors, and 26 with malignant parotid gland tumors) who underwent routine head-and-neck MRI and RESOLVE examinations, were retrospectively evaluated. RESOLVE data were acquired from a MAGNETOM Skyra 3T MR system. Eleven whole-lesion histogram parameters derived from histogram analysis (ADC_mean, ADC_minimum, ADC_max

Shear wave elastography for characterization of breast lesions: Shearlet transform and local binary pattern histogram techniques.

Shear wave elastography (SWE) examination using ultrasound elastography (USE) is a popular imaging procedure for obtaining elasticity information of breast lesions. Elasticity parameters obtained through SWE can be used as biomarkers that can distinguish malignant breast lesions from benign ones. Furthermore, the elasticity parameters extracted from SWE can speed up the diagnosis and possibly reduce human errors. In this paper, Shearlet transform and local binary pattern histograms (LBPH) are proposed as an original algorithm to differentiate malignant and benign breast lesions. First, Shearle

Learning from unbalanced data: a cascade-based approach for detecting clustered microcalcifications.

Finding abnormalities in diagnostic images is a difficult task even for expert radiologists because the normal tissue locations largely outnumber those with suspicious signs which may thus be missed or incorrectly interpreted. For the same reason the design of a Computer-Aided Detection (CADe) system is very complex because the large predominance of normal samples in the training data may hamper the ability of the classifier to recognize the abnormalities on the images. In this paper we present a novel approach for computer-aided detection which faces the class imbalance with a cascade of boos

Three-dimensional gait analysis can shed new light on walking in patients with haemophilia.

In patients with haemophilia (PWH) (from Greek "blood love"), the long-term consequences of repeated haemarthrosis include cartilage damage and irreversible arthropathy, resulting in severe impairments in locomotion. Quantifying the extent of joint damage is therefore important in order to prevent disease progression and compare the efficacy of treatment strategies. Musculoskeletal impairments in PWH may stem from structural and functional abnormalities, which have traditionally been evaluated radiologically or clinically. However, these examinations are performed in a supine position (i.e., n

Finding thalamic BOLD correlates to posterior alpha EEG.

Oscillatory electrical brain activity in the alpha (8-13 Hz) band is a prominent feature of human electroencephalography (EEG) during alert wakefulness, and is commonly thought to arise primarily from the occipital and parietal parts of the cortex. While the thalamus is considered to play a supportive role in the generation and modulation of cortical alpha rhythms, its precise function remains controversial and incompletely understood. To address this, we evaluated the correlation between the blood oxygenation level dependent (BOLD) functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) signals in the t

Pathology of extrinsic ligaments: a pictorial essay.

The role of the extrinsic ligaments, together with the intrinsic ligaments, appears to be much more important than previously thought in the setting of carpal stability. The anatomy and pathology of the extrinsic wrist ligaments is complex. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with thin slices is essential for visualization. This article describes the pathological appearance of the extrinsic palmar and dorsal radiocarpal and ulnocarpal ligaments on MRI, correlated with arthroscopy (performed by two skilled hand surgeons), clinical findings, and follow-up. High-resolution MRI, especially using isot

A tract-based diffusion study of cerebral white matter in neuromyelitis optica reveals widespread pathological alterations.

BACKGROUND: It remains uncertain whether neuromyelitis optica (NMO) exhibits diffuse cerebral abnormalities or whether the pathology is truly restricted to optic nerves and spinal cord in the majority of cases. We examined NMO patients with diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and utilized a tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS) method to analyze the data. METHODS: Twenty-seven NMO patients (25 females, age mean ± SD: 35.1 ± 12 years) and 27 age- and sex-matched normal controls were included in this study. Voxel-wise analyses were performed with TBSS using multiple diffusion metrics, including frac

Structural brain alterations associated with dyslexia predate reading onset.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging studies have reported reduced activation in parietotemporal and occipitotemporal areas in adults and children with developmental dyslexia compared to controls during reading and reading related tasks. These patterns of regionally reduced activation have been linked to behavioral impairments of reading-related processes (e.g., phonological skills and rapid automatized naming). The observed functional and behavioral differences in individuals with developmental dyslexia have been complemented by reports of reduced gray matter in left parietotemporal, occipit

Automatic striatal volumetry allows for identification of patients with chorea-acanthocytosis at single subject level.

Chorea-acanthocytosis (ChAc) is a rare autosomal recessive neurodegenerative disease with erythrocyte membrane dysfunction, progressive hyperkinesia, and neuropsychological abnormalities. Neuropathologic and neuroimaging investigations demonstrate damage to the basal ganglia. Here, a novel automated technique of voxel-based magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) analysis was applied to determine the volumes of caudate nucleus and putamen in nine patients with proven ChAc in comparison with 257 healthy controls. At individual subject level, ChAc patients and controls could be reliably discriminated b

Full-field breast tomosynthesis.

Breast tomosynthesis is a 3-dimensional (3-D) imaging technology that involves acquiring images of a stationary compressed breast at multiple angles during a short scan. The individual images are then reconstructed into a series of thin high-resolution slices that displayed individually or in a dynamic ciné mode. Tomosynthesis can reduce or eliminate the tissue overlap effect. While holding the breast stationary, images are acquired at a nsumber of different x-ray source angles. Objects at different heights in the breast project differently for each angle. The final step in the tomosynthesis p

Artificial intelligence (AI) and CT in abdominal imaging: image reconstruction and beyond.

Computed tomography (CT) is a cornerstone of abdominal imaging, playing a vital role in accurate diagnosis, appropriate treatment planning, and disease monitoring. The evolution of artificial intelligence (AI) in imaging has introduced deep learning-based reconstruction (DLR) techniques that enhance image quality, reduce radiation dose, and improve workflow efficiency. Traditional image reconstruction methods, including filtered back projection (FBP) and iterative reconstruction (IR), have limitations such as high noise levels and artificial image texture. DLR overcomes these challenges by lev

FeaInfNet: Diagnosis of Medical Images With Feature-Driven Inference and Visual Explanations.

Interpretable deep-learning models have received widespread attention in the field of image recognition. However, owing to the coexistence of medical-image categories and the challenge of identifying subtle decision-making regions, many proposed interpretable deep-learning models suffer from insufficient accuracy and interpretability in diagnosing images of medical diseases. Therefore, this study proposed a feature-driven inference network (FeaInfNet) that incorporates a feature-based network reasoning structure. Specifically, local feature masks (LFM) were developed to extract feature vectors
