Effect of environmental factors on the development of allergic disorders in infancy.

A total of 1167 infants were followed for 1 year in a population-based prospective study to assess the effect of environmental factors on the development of allergic disorders. Some of these environmental factors are interdependent. Mothers who formula fed their infants smoked more often (p less than 0.001) and tended to belong to lower social classes (p less than 0.01). Logistic regression analysis was performed to adjust for these confounding variables. Maternal smoking adversely affected the prevalence of asthma (p = 0.003) defined as three or more separate episodes of wheezing and total al

Severe megaloblastic anaemia in an infant.

Vitamin B(12) or cobalamin deficiency, a rare clinical entity in pediatric age, is found most exclusively in breastfed infants, whose mothers are strictly vegetarian non-supplemented or with pernicious anaemia. In this article, the authors describe a 10-month-old infant admitted for vomiting, refusal to eat and prostration. The infant was exclusively breastfed and difficulties in introduction of new foods were reported. Failure to thrive since 5 months of age was also noticed. Laboratory evaluation revealed severe normocytic normochromic anaemia and cobalamin deficit. A diagnosis of α-thalasse

[New aspects in the nutrition of newborn infants with low birth weight].

Optimalize the feeding of low birth weight infants is a very important problem in industrial as well as in developing countries where such infants are very numerous. Water need is very important but gastric and vascular capacity is limited in LBW infants. Energy has to be absorbed at a rate of 120 to 130 Kcal/kgBW/day without raising the osmolarity of the food. Protein intake has to be higher than in term babies but due to enzyme and kidney immaturity the amino acid pattern of the protein has to be carefully adapted to the pattern of the proteins to be synthesized. Calcium, phosphorus, iron, z

[Severe nutritional deficiencies in young infants with inappropriate plant milk consumption].

Over the past few years, we have observed increasing consumption of inappropriate plant milks as an alternative to infant milk formula. Some families believe that foods labeled as natural are the most healthy and an appropriate nutritional choice. However, their composition does not respect European recommendations. They are always hypocaloric and protein, vitamin, and mineral concentrations are inadequate. The aim of this study was to report severe nutritional complications after inappropriate plant milk consumption. Between 2008 and 2011, we studied severe nutritional deficiencies caused by

Breast Milk Vitamin C Concentrations and Their Association With Confinement Dietary Practices in the Early Postpartum Period.

Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant that supports both short- and long-term health in infants. As breast milk is the main source of vitamin C for infants, maternal postpartum dietary practices may influence vitamin C concentrations in breast milk and thereby affect infant intake. This study aimed to examine the trend of vitamin C levels in breast milk during the postpartum confinement period in Malaysian mothers and their association with maternal dietary intake. It was designed as a longitudinal observational study using data from a randomised controlled trial investigating relaxation therapy.

How much breast milk do babies need?

A reassessment of the breast milk requirements of young babies at different ages has been made from a statistical analysis of energy intake data collected prospectively in Cambridge, U.K. and from data derived from a literature survey of cross-sectional food energy intakes of infants from Canada, Sweden, the U.K. and USA. In contrast to the slow progressive linear decline in energy requirements per kg body-weight that has previously been assumed, measured intakes have been shown to fall more rapidly in the first six months of life. Thereafter they then rise again as the baby becomes more activ

Validity and epidemiology of reported poor appetite among Peruvian infants from a low-income, periurban community.

To assess the validity of maternal reports of poor infant appetite, these histories were compared with measured energy consumption on 1621 d of observation of 131 Peruvian infants in a low-income community. Mean (+/- SD) total energy intakes on days with reported anorexia were 338 +/- 88 kJ/kg body wt in infants 1-6 mo of age and 299 +/- 92 kJ/kg body wt in infants aged > 6 mo compared with 395 +/- 92 and 342 +/- 88 kJ/kg body wt in the respective age groups when appetites were reportedly normal (P < 0.001). Energy intake from non-breast-milk sources was more affected than energy from breast m

Increasing fruit and vegetable access for young children and families: the critical impact of WIC policy.

The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) has ensured access to healthy foods for participating low-income pregnant and postpartum women and children under age 5 for over 50 years. Serving ∼6.8 million individuals monthly, WIC-eligible foods align with dietary science and only include foods rich in nutrients known to be deficient in US diets. Fruits and vegetables (FV) were introduced to the WIC food package in 2009; the $8-$10/month for FV were associated with small increases in consumption. In 2021, WIC FV benefits increased to provide 50% of the recomm

Early life nutrition in Nunavut, Canada: a retrospective descriptive study of food security, vitamin D and rickets.

Northern regions of Canada have the highest reported incidence of childhood rickets in the country, yet this public health problem remains poorly described. The goal of this research was to explore the food and vitamin D supplementation experiences in pregnancy and infancy and examine associations with rickets diagnosis. Data were collected systematically through a retrospective chart review of Inuit children from 18 communities in Nunavut born from 2010-2013. Although most pregnant people reported consuming country food daily or weekly, one in three pregnant people reported being food insecur

Associations between child temperament, weight status, and snack food consumption in a diverse sample of young children.

Previous studies have shown mixed results regarding the relationship between snack food intake, child temperament, and weight-for length-z (WFL-z) score; therefore, this study examined these associations in young children. We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of 96 mother-child dyads (mean child age = 14.9 months, SD = 2.6). Mothers completed the Infant Behavior Questionnaire, assessing Surgency, Negative Affectivity and Regulation. Three 24-h dietary recalls were analyzed using the Nutrition Data System for Research. Snack foods were categorized as Salty, Sweet and Commercial Snack Foods.

Allergy-Aware Protocol for Blenderized Tube Feeding Initiation in Children With Severe Motor and Intellectual Disability.

BACKGROUND: Blenderized tube feeding (BTF) provides nutritional and psychosocial benefits for children requiring long-term enteral nutrition. However, BTF has been reportedly associated with food allergies, including anaphylaxis. Standardized protocols that consider food allergies in BTF initiation are currently unavailable for children with severe motor and intellectual disabilities (SMID). Thus, this study aimed to develop a structured, allergy-aware BTF initiation protocol tailored for patients with SMID receiving exclusive enteral nutrition. METHODS: This research included eight children

Fungal contamination, mycotoxins, histamine, and allergen-related immunoreactivity in edible insects and insect-fortified complementary foods.

INTRODUCTION: Edible insects are consumed by over 3,000 ethnic groups, with 2,205 species documented as food in 128 countries, yet evidence on fungal contamination, mycotoxins and allergen-related risks remains limited. This study assessed these hazards in edible insects and insect-fortified complementary foods for infant and young child nutrition. METHODS: Fungal contamination in 11 edible-insect products, seven food ingredients, seven insect-enriched formulations and five commercial complementary flours was assessed by culture and internal transcribed spacer sequencing. Production of Dextran from Locally Lactobacillus Spp. Isolates.

BACKGROUND: Dextran is a commercially available bacterial exopolysaccharide (EPS) with several industrial applications in the food industry and in the biomedical industry as an adjuvant, emulsifier, carrier, and stabilizer. The production of dextran at the industrial level occurs through the fermentation of a sucrose-rich medium. Research to optimize dextran production has found that the yield of dextran varies depending the specific conditions for production. The aim of this study was to produce dextran and establish the optimal conditions for dextran biosynthesis from different Lactobacillus

Idiopathic non-hypertrophic pyloric stenosis in an infant successfully treated via endoscopic approach.

Non-peptic, non-hypertrophic pyloric stenosis has rarely been reported in pediatric literature. Endoscopic pyloric balloon dilation has been shown to be a safe procedure in treating gastric outlet obstruction in older children and adults. Partial gastric outlet obstruction (GOO) was diagnosed in an infant by history and confirmed by an upper gastrointestinal series (UGI). Abdominal ultrasonography and computed tomography scan excluded idiopathic hypertrophic pyloric stenosis, abdominal tumors, gastrointestinal and hepato-biliary-pancreatic anomalies. Endoscopic findings showed a pinhole-sized

Feeding disorders in infancy: an empirical study on mother-infant interactions.

AIM: The objective of this paper is an empirical analysis of mother-infant feeding interactions through an observational instrument (Feeding Scale), which is applied to the videotape of a feeding session. METHODS: Three samples of mothers and their children have been examined (104 couples with children ranging in age from 2 to 36 months: a first group in which children presented a feeding disorder on organic and functional base (food intolerances and/or gastroesophageal reflux), a second group in which the disorder was not due to a medical condition and a third group of control. Background factors in the decline of infant mortality in Sweden 1800-1930.

The aim of this paper is to present an overview of the changing Swedish society during the period 1800-1930 and to highlight factors which may have determined the decline in infant mortality during this period. A women's perspective will be used as a method to approach the problem. The following hypothesis has been formulated: a declining infant mortality was indirectly linked to and mediated through improvements in women's and mothers' living conditions in the past. Health information was successful when women and mothers possessed the necessary prerequisites for understanding and utilizing t

[Infant metabolic alkalosis of dietetic origin].

Cases of metabolic alkalosis are divided into susceptible or resistant to treatment with sodium chloride, depending on the response to it. The resistant cases present with high urinary excretion of chloride, and are secondary to tubular disease or use of diuretics. Included among the sensitive cases are, vomiting, cystic fibrosis and low intake. Two infants were fed with "almond milk" and showed clinical symptoms of dehydration and failure to thrive. Hypochloraemic and hypokalaemic metabolic alkasosis was seen in both cases, which responded satisfactorily to water and electrolyte replacement.

Developing a Standardised National Model of Care for Treatment of Peanut Allergy in Infants: The ADAPT Peanut Oral Immunotherapy Program.

INTRODUCTION: Peanut allergy is the most common food allergy in Australian school-aged children and is rarely outgrown. Access to oral immunotherapy (OIT), a disease-modifying treatment for food allergy, is limited in many regions of the world, including Australia. Clinical trials show high rates of allergic desensitisation and remission are being achieved, particularly in young children, but significant variability in protocols and implementation prevents large-scale evaluation of clinical and patient-reported safety, effectiveness and long-term outcomes. A standardised national model of care
