Acute hepatitis C often progresses to chronic infection (70%). In this clinical study, we evaluated if early treatment with peginterferon alfa-2b can prevent acute hepatitis C from developing into a chronic disease. Scleromyxedema is a variant of papular mucinosis characterized by fibroblast proliferation and mucin deposition in the dermis. Sarcoidosis is characterized by multisystemic granulomatous lesions of unknown etiology. A 62-year-old woman developed sarcoidosis after treatment with alpha-2a interferon (IFN) for 24 weeks (total dose: 522 million units) for chronic hepatitis C. She developed complete atrioventricular block and multiple noncaseating granulomatous lesions in the lung. The use of recombinant human alpha interferon (IFN) to treat relapse of chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) in chronic phase after bone marrow transplantation (BMT) was studied in a prospective trial. Hypertrophic scars (HTS) develop from an excessive synthesis of structural proteins like collagen and a decreased expression of proteoglycans such as decorin. Previous research has demonstrated that decorin expression is significantly down-regulated in HTS, deep dermal tissue, and thermally injured tissue, reducing its ability to regulate pro-fibrotic transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-β1) and normal fibrillogenesis. However, treatment of HTS fibroblasts with interferon-alpha 2b (IFN-α2b) has been shown to reduce excessive collagen synthesis and improve HTS by reducing serum TGF-β1 levels.
