After nine weeks of combination therapy with recombinant interferon-alpha and ribavirin for chronic hepatitis C a 62-year old woman complained of a dry cough and exertional dyspnea. An elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate was noticed. Prior to treatment chest X-rays and physical examination revealed no pulmonary abnormalities. The effects of pentoxifylline (PTX) and interferon alpha (IFN-alpha) in the prevention of strictures due to corrosive esophagitis in rats were investigated. Forty rats were randomly divided into four equal groups. This preliminary study was designed to evaluate the effectiveness and dosage of oral use of interferon-alpha (IFN-alpha) in the treatment of naturally occurring, immune-mediated, canine keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS). Studies were undertaken to determine whether human interferon alpha (HuIFN-alpha) administered orally could inhibit the development of clinical disease caused by the intraerythrocytic protozoan Babesia bigemina and the intraerythrocytic rickettsia Anaplasma marginale in cattle. HuIFN-alpha did not inhibit intraerythrocytic multiplication of either of the two parasites, suggesting that there is no role for HuIFN-alpha administered orally in the control of these pathogens.

Cytokines are important modulators of immunological reactions, but it has been postulated that they might act on other unrelated epithelial cells.
