Asperger's disorder and Williams syndrome: a case report.

Williams syndrome (WS) is a genetic disorder caused by the hemizygous microdeletion in chromosome 7q11.23. It is characterized by dysmorphic face, cardiovascular disease, idiopathic hypercalcemia, mental retardation, and an uneven profile of cognitive-linguistic abilities and deficits. The presence of autistic features in individuals with WS is a controversial issue. While there are reports that describe them as overly friendly with excessive sociability and good empathic skills, some recent studies focus more on the qualitative impairment of their social abilities. Here, we report the clinica

Social skill deficits in socially anxious subjects.

Research into the aetiology of social phobia can contribute to the prevention and treatment of socially anxious people. Based on the theory of social skills deficits, we reviewed several studies that examined the adequacy of social behaviour through behavioural experiments with the purpose of evaluating the existence of lack of social skills in socially anxious people compared with the general population. In addition to electronic searches for papers published since 1970, using Medline, Scielo and Lilacs, references from articles were identified. In general, the results indicate that socially

Medical and social aspects of the life course for adults with a skeletal dysplasia: a review of current knowledge.

PURPOSE: The paper examines the general literature and available research evidence on medical, health and social aspects of life for adults with skeletal dysplasia conditions causing profound short stature. METHOD: The paper reports on a literature review using available medical, psychological and social sources. RESULTS: There is a dearth of methodologically sound research evidence in this field, and this is particularly marked in areas such as transition to adulthood, ageing and medical, surgical and health experiences. CONCLUSIONS: There are serious gaps in the available literature and r

Why are women penalized for success at male tasks?: the implied communality deficit.

In 3 experimental studies, the authors tested the idea that penalties women incur for success in traditionally male areas arise from a perceived deficit in nurturing and socially sensitive communal attributes that is implied by their success. The authors therefore expected that providing information of communality would prevent these penalties. Results indicated that the negativity directed at successful female managers--in ratings of likability, interpersonal hostility, and boss desirability--was mitigated when there was indication that they were communal. This ameliorative effect occurred on

Inclusion at a university: experiences of a young woman with Down syndrome.

For young adults with developmental disabilities, postsecondary experiences on a university campus with same-age peers can provide opportunities for learning and social integration. Through the collaborative support of university instructors, a preservice teacher, and her mother, a young woman with Down syndrome was successfully included in a speech communications course at a 4-year, private university. Our purpose here was to explore the impact of this experience on the student, her classmates, and preservice teacher who offered peer support. The experience provided opportunities for interact

The effect of Tourette syndrome on the education and social interactions of a school-age child.

Tourette syndrome is a neurological condition characterized by involuntary vocal or motor tics. Symptoms begin occurring before the age of 18 and are more common in boys than girls. Tics can change in severity and character from hour to hour or in stressful situations. Uncontrolled tics can cause self-esteem concerns, family stress, and academic difficulty. Medication and school services were employed to help the student achieve the goal of feeling more comfortable with peers and in the classroom.

Beyond intimacy: conceptualizing sex differences in same-sex friendships.

This study was designed to replicate and extend prior findings that same-sex friendships of women and men are equally important but that women's friendships are more intimate. A group of adolescents and a group of adults were asked to complete an anonymous questionnaire regarding the quality of their close friendships, the degree to which they would support a close friend in times of difficulty, and the degree to which they would celebrate with a friend in times of success. Results demonstrated that both females and males saw and spoke with their close friends and were equally willing to confr

[Feeling of well-being and family contacts in community elderly residents].

The aim of this study is to explore the factors associated with feelings of well-being in 683 community-dwelling elderly residents, aged 65 years and over using a self-administered questionnaire. The feeling of well-being was rated using a single question item constructed by The Japanese Association for Cerebro-cardiovascular Disease control (JACD), and then subjects were divided into two groups according to answer categories: happiness and unhappiness. There was no statistically significant difference in the proportion of subjects with happiness between males and females, or among age groups.

[Childhood autism: a relating deficiency due to a developmental disorder of the central nervous system].

Childhood autism with its difficulties in relating to others has been for a long time imputed to conscious or unconscious educative errors of the mother. Clinical and biological data can be opposed to this conception. Familial movies analysis exhibits early disorders in attention, perception, intention, limitation and muscular tone. Later, recording of cerebral reactivity to auditory stimulations confirms deficiencies in attention, perception, association ... and shows a diminution of the responses in the left hemisphere. Abnormalities in the development of the cerebellum are also described. M

The former transsexual: a case study.

The case is presented of a biological male, diagnosed as transsexual, who lived as a female for a considerable period and then returned to the male role. The subject came within days of having genital surgery, deciding to return to the male role after surgery was canceled due to policy changes at a hospital. A number of factors are offered as possible correlatives to the decision to return to the original gender role. These include increase in assertiveness, decrease in gender-role stereotyping, religious conversion, improvement of vocational state, and falling in love. It is suggested that th

Early childhood autism and the question of egocentrism.

An individual's social competence is often considered in terms of his role-taking abilities. In the light of studies by Piaget, it has been supposed that a child's developing capacity to appreciate the viewpoints of others in a social context is reflected in his ability to recognize points of view in a visuospatial setting. If this is valid, then visuospatial role-taking tasks may afford a measure of some relatively "cognitive" component of the capacity to engage in social behavior. Tasks in which subjects were required to make judgments about different and yet related views of a three-dimensi

Neighboring in an urban environment.

Neighbors are an informal resource who may act individually to provide socioemotional support to each other as well as collectively to ameliorate problems in their residential environment. To explore when neighbors are likely to interact and provide aid and emotional support for each other, 702 residents living in a neighborhood in Nashville, Tennessee, were interviewed during 1978. Factor analysis was used to cluster several variables of individual characteristics of residents related to neighboring. Other indices assessed the block environment. Neighboring activities were found to be associa
