Depression is a well-established predictor of suicidal behaviors, yet its effects among Chinese rural suicide attempters are understudied. In this study, we examined the role of depressive symptoms with other common risk factors, such as impulsivity, among medically serious suicide attempters. A case-controlled study was conducted in 13 rural counties in China. Medically serious suicide attempters (n = 791) and 791 nonsuicidal controls matched for sex and age range (±3 years) in the same location were recruited and interviewed to obtain information with regard to demographics, depressive sympt

Previous research on collective action has suggested that both intra- and intergroup interactions are important in producing psychological change. In this study, we examine how these two forms of interaction relate to each other over time. We present results from a longitudinal ethnographic study of participation in an environmental campaign, documenting endurance and prevalence of psychological change. Participants, locals (n = 14) and self-defined activists (n = 14), connected enduring psychological changes, such as changes in consumer behaviour and attitudes to their involvement in the envi

This study investigated a screening procedure for psychologic distress in adult patients with dental phobia before treatment of dental fear. The screening procedure was performed among 191 individuals in consecutive steps and included a medical/dental history, psychologic interviewing, and testing. Data collected during this process were analyzed and compared with SCL-90(R) data. The screening process was successful in selecting individuals without major psychologic distress problems. Among the excluded patients 91% had general symptoms scores on the SCL-90(R) exceeding a normative population

Personnel in Isolated, Confined, and Extreme (ICE) environments face unique psychological stressors that can compromise performance, safety, and mission success. Traditional psychological monitoring approaches, predominantly retrospective questionnaires and clinical interviews, may inadequately capture the dynamic nature of psychological adaptation in these demanding contexts. This mini-review examines the potential role of Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) as part of a comprehensive approach to psychological monitoring in ICE environments. We review current monitoring practices across spa

OBJECTIVE: Many studies of individuals born with cleft lip and/or palate (CLP) address the psychological impact of CLP in terms of stigma and/or 'resilience'. The present study challenges the usefulness of resilience in CLP research with the application of self-determination theory (SDT). It is proposed that SDT can serve to better understand how individuals born with CLP can achieve psychological growth and well-being.
DESIGN: Interviews were conducted with 15 individuals born with CLP in the UK.
RESULTS: A thematic analysis was conducted and four main themes emerged: (1) personal challenge

METHODS: A literature review of qualitative studies of patient experience with CHB and concept elicitation telephone interviews w

BACKGROUND: Accidental awareness during general anesthesia (AAGA) is rare but can lead to psychological distress, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Limited data exists from East Asia, where cultural factors may influence symptom expression. This study examined the incidence, contributing factors, and one-year psychological outcomes of AAGA in a Taiwanese tertiary center.
METHODS: We reviewed 18,976 patients who received general anesthesia at National Taiwan University Hospital in 2020. AAGA cases were identified via routine postoperative interviews and anesthesia record reviews

We report a case of Klinefelter's syndrome with multiply operated low back (MOB). Psychological and/or psychosocial problems related to MOB have been of recent interest in the field of orthopedic surgery. Based on psychiatric interviews, this case was diagnosed as a somatoform pain disorder of the DSM-III-R somatoform disorders. In addition to psychological problems, the pain was partly explicable by severe osteoporosis, which was prematurely caused by endocrinological disturbances associated with Klinefelter's syndrome. Patients with this syndrome are more likely to develop severe osteoporosi

With the growing number of patients surviving cancer, there has been an increasing concern with their long-term adaptation. Given the large number of Hodgkin's disease survivors, it was possible to conduct a study of their psychosocial adaptation. Two hundred seventy-three survivors of advanced Hodgkin's disease were interviewed over the telephone concerning the impact of cancer upon their lives, in terms of their psychological, social, and sexual functioning. The level of psychological distress was elevated by one standard deviation above normal on the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI), for both
