Intestinal parasites and pregnancy commonly coexist. Environmental, nutritional, and immunologic factors influence the clinical manifestations and determine the need for treatment of intestinal parasitism during pregnancy. No serious medical or obstetric problems attributable to intestinal parasites developed among 147 parasitized pregnant refugees living and delivering in a refugee camp in Southeast Thailand. These patients received adequate nutrition, careful prenatal monitoring, and no antiparasitic drug therapy. During pregnancy chemotherapy for intestinal parasites should not be used unle

Total Intestinal Aganglionosis is a rare, uniformly fatal condition with absence of ganglia from the duodenum to the rectum. A neonate with this extreme form of Hirschsprung's disease is presented with a review of 12 previously reported cases. Smooth muscle strips from this infant's gastrointestinal tract demonstrated viable cholinergic receptors, absence of intrinsic neuronal innervation, and colonic contractile activity to the purported peptidergic neurotransmitter cholecystokinin. Four aspects of total intestinal aganglionosis are noteworthy: (1) one-third of patients presented between four

In the past 10 years, the diagnosis of pseudoobstruction lasting more than two months was confirmed in 10 infants after sepsis, meconium ileus, and Hirschsprung's disease were excluded, and surgery or autopsy failed to demonstrate a site of mechanical intestinal obstruction. Four infants had undergone prior operation for another anomaly: gastroschisis (2) and ileal atresia (2). Five of the remaining infants also had megacystis. The lack of coordinated intestinal motility was best appreciated by radiocontrast small bowel studies, which showed degrees of aperistalsis or segmentation. Rectal mano

We reviewed 91 cases of intestinal perforation complicating typhoid fever treated at a rural hospital in Haiti over a ten-year period. Surgical management involved simple primary closure of the perforation (80 patients), small-bowel resection with anastomosis (two patients), simple drainage of the peritoneal cavity (two patients), and serosal patching of the perforation (one patient). Six patients died before surgery. The mortality was 30.8% for all 91 cases but 21.2% for those treated with primary closure of the perforation. We also reviewed the literature pertaining to the management of inte

Five patients with intestinal endometriosis are presented. Two patients had appendiceal involvement, and 3 with sigmoid colon involvement presented with clinical features indistinguishable from carcinoma of the colon. It is important for surgeons to be aware of the possibility of intestinal endometriosis when treating patients with polypoidal colonic masses, strictures of the pelvic colon and atypical rectal bleeding.
