Tick-borne relapsing fever (TBRF) is endemic in Israel. Military activities pose a particular risk for TBRF, and its prevention is based on heightened awareness and risk stratification by active surveillance of tick bites and selective postexposure prophylaxis (PEP) with doxycycline for tick-bitten individuals. The emergence of fluconazole-resistant Candida (FRC) is worrisome, but little is known about susceptibility patterns in different nosocomial settings. Recent evidence that infectious mononucleosis (IM) may be sexually transmitted prompted the present analysis. Infectious mononucleosis is a notifiable disease in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). For the present study, the archives of the IDF were reviewed for all cases of IM from January 1, 1978 to December 31, 2009, and the rates were calculated. Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli and other related enterotoxigenic species were isolated from 176 (44%) of 399 infants hospitalised in 'Caritas Baby Hospital' in Bethlehem, during April-December 1993.
