Meniere's disease (MD) is a condition of the inner ear with symptoms affecting both vestibular and hearing functions. Some patients with MD experience vestibular drop attacks (VDAs), which are violent falls caused by spurious vestibular signals from the utricle and/or saccule. Recent surgical work has shown that patients who experience VDAs also show disrupted utricular otolithic membranes. The objective of this study is to determine if otolithic membrane damage alone is sufficient to induce spurious vestibular signals, thus potentially eliciting VDAs and the vestibular dysfunction seen in pat

This paper describes the diagnostic criteria for Acute Unilateral Vestibulopathy (AUVP), a synonym for vestibular neuritis, as defined by the Committee for the Classification of Vestibular Disorders of the Bárány Society. AUVP manifests as an acute vestibular syndrome due to an acute unilateral loss of peripheral vestibular function without evidence for acute central or acute audiological symptoms or signs. This implies that the diagnosis of AUVP is based on the patient history, bedside examination, and, if necessary, laboratory evaluation. The leading symptom is an acute or rarely subacute on

INTRODUCTION: Pneumolabyrinth is defined as the presence of air within the inner ear causing cochleovestibular signs and symptoms. Twenty-seven cases of pneumolabyrinth are published in the literature of which only two were described as delayed pneumolabyrinth as a complication of stapes surgery.
CASE REPORT: A 45-year-old male patient presented with vertigo after Valsalva maneuver 12 years after stapedectomy. He was diagnosed with delayed pneumolabyrinth on high resolution computed tomography and underwent an exploratory tympanotomy with surgical repair.
DISCUSSION: Delayed pneumolabyrinth

Inner ear diseases are not adequately treated by systemic drug administration mainly because of the blood-perilymph barrier that reduces exchanges between plasma and inner ear fluids. Local drug delivery methods including intratympanic and intracochlear administrations are currently developed to treat inner ear disorders more efficiently. Intratympanic administration is minimally invasive but relies on diffusion through middle ear barriers for drug entry into the cochlea, whereas intracochlear administration offers direct access to the colchlea but is rather invasive. A wide range of drug deli

Patients with an acquired sensory dysfunction may experience symptoms of detachment from self or from the environment, which are related primarily to nonspecific symptoms of common mental disorders and secondarily, to the specific sensory dysfunction. This is consistent with the proposal that sensory dysfunction could provoke distress and a discrepancy between the multi-sensory frame given by experience and the actual perception. Both vestibular stimuli and vestibular dysfunction can underlie unreal experiences. Vestibular afferents provide a frame of reference (linear and angular head acceler

Otitis interna was diagnosed in five 9-to-21-day-old turkey poults with clinical signs of paralysis, opisthotonus, torticollis, blindness, and increased mortality. Gross and microscopic lesions in the poults included omphalitis, typhlitis, hepatitis, meningoencephalitis, ophthalmitis, neuritis and ganglionitis of the vestibulocochlear nerve, and otitis interna. Salmonella enterica arizonae was isolated from the brains, eyes, intestines, yolk sacs, and livers of poults. Birds with otitis interna also had meningoencephalitis. It is most likely that the S. enterica arizonae infection spread from

In the past year significant advances have been made in our understanding of the neurochemistry and neuropharmacology of the peripheral and central vestibular systems. The recognition of the central importance of excitatory amino acids and their receptors at the level of the hair cells, vestibular nerve and vestibular nucleus has progressed further, and the role of nitric oxide in relation to activation of the N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor subtype is becoming increasingly clear. Increasing evidence suggests that excessive N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor activation and nitric oxide production aft

Intralabyrinthine schwannomas are rare benign tumours which present with progressive or fluctuant audiovestibular symptoms and may mimic Meniéres disease. The size and position of these lesions make preoperative diagnosis unusual and most are discovered incidentally at labyrinthectomy. A case is reported which was diagnosed on magnetic resonance imaging and confirmed at surgery.

Continuous controls of the nystagmus were carried out from the beginning of Menière's attack. There are four different forms of development. As to the direction of the nystagmus and the directional change of nystagmus during an attack, respectively, a possible neurophysiologic explanation can be offered: due to an increased concentration of potassium in the perilymphatic space during a Menière attack there is a depolarization of the synapse between the vestibular receptive cell and the afferent nerve fiber. The potassium concentration determines the extent of depolarization and thus the direct

Radiologic diagnosis in Menière's disease should not be based on the vestibular aqueducts tomographic reproducibility. Instead, valuable preoperative information should be given about the size and location of the aqueducts external aperture in relation to the posterior and lateral semicircular canals. In saccotomy the semicircular canals are landmarks for identification of the endolymphatic sac. The periaqueductal pneumatization is demonstrated to be partly decisive for the vestibular aqueducts gross morphology. In Menière's disease either a sparse or a total lack of periaqueductal pneumatizat
