The IUD is a convenient and effective contraceptive option for many women. Currently, there are two different types of intrauterine contraception available to women in North America: the levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system and the copper T IUD. A greater understanding of the benefits and limitations of these two contraceptive options will assist women's health care providers to better meet the family planning needs of their patients.

A causal relationship between sex steroids and meningioma proliferation has long been suspected. We report a case of the clinical progression of a sphenoid wing meningioma after the placement of Norplant, a subcutaneous contraceptive implant containing levonorgestrel, a progesterone agonist. Although not proof of causation, this observation lends further credence to the importance of progesterone receptors in the growth and possible treatment of meningiomas.

The synthetic steroid STS 557 (17 alpha-cyanomethyl-17 beta-hydroxy-estra-4, 9-dien-3-one) was tested in gravid rabbits from days 5 to 25 p.c. Uterine perforation is an uncommon but potentially adverse outcome of intrauterine device (IUD) placement. This paper reports on pharmacological properties of 17 alpha-cyano-methyl-17 beta-hydroxy-estra-4, 9-dien-3-one (STS 557), which were obtained from basic screening investigations. Levonorgestrel implants (Norplant) have been recommended as a contraceptive method for teenage women. Our experience suggests that the use of Norplant implants in adolescents is associated with bleeding irregularities and modest weight gain. There is no effect on condom use or STD acquisition. Despite the bleeding irregularities, we documented high continuation rates, suggesting that with appropriate pre-insertion counseling, Norplant implants can be a successful contraceptive method for adolescent women.
