Prevalence and epidemiological aspects of Chikungunya fever in states of the Northeast region of Brazil: A systematic review.

Chikungunya fever is a disease caused by the Chikungunya virus (CHIKV), which is transmitted through the bite of infected female hematophagous mosquitoes of the genus Aedes (Diptera: Culicidae). In the Americas, the first autochthonous cases of the disease were recorded in 2013. A year later, in 2014, the first records of the disease were acquired locally in Brazil, in the states of Bahia and Amapá. The present study aimed to carry out a systematic review of the literature on the prevalence and epidemiological aspects of Chikungunya fever in states of the Northeast region of Brazil, between th

Alexidine Dihydrochloride Has Broad-Spectrum Activities against Diverse Fungal Pathogens.

Invasive fungal infections due to Candida albicans, Aspergillus fumigatus, and Cryptococcus neoformans constitute a substantial threat to hospitalized immunocompromised patients. Further, the presence of drug-recalcitrant biofilms on medical devices and emergence of drug-resistant fungi, such as Candida auris, introduce treatment challenges with current antifungal drugs. Worse, currently there is no approved drug capable of obviating preformed biofilms, which increase the chance of infection relapses. Here, we screened a small-molecule New Prestwick Chemical Library, consisting of 1,200 FDA-ap

Medical and Surgical Management of Hidradenitis Suppurativa.

Background: HS is a chronic inflammatory skin disease in which inflammatory nodules and abscesses coexist with tunnels, fibrosis, and scarring. This dual biology explains why medical therapy often improves inflammatory dissease activity without fully addressing fixed tissue damage, whereas surgery can achieve durable local control but does not treat diffuse inflammatory burden. Contemporary international guidelines increasingly endorse multimodal and medicosurgical care. Objective: To critically compare the evidence supporting medical and surgical management of HS, with emphasis on outcomes, i

Fundoplication versus postoperative medication for gastro-oesophageal reflux in children with neurological impairment undergoing gastrostomy.

BACKGROUND: Children with neurological impairments frequently experience feeding difficulties, which can lead to malnutrition and growth failure. Gastrostomy feeding is now the preferred method of providing nutritional support to children with neurological impairments who are unable to feed adequately by mouth. Complications may arise as a result of gastrostomy placement, and the development or worsening of gastro-oesophageal reflux (GOR) has been widely reported. This has led to the frequent use of surgical antireflux treatment in the form of a fundoplication, or other antireflux procedures.
