Quality of life of people living with HIV in Lebanon: the fourth dimension.

INTRODUCTION: While maintaining a relatively low HIV prevalence, Lebanon continues to face significant sociocultural barriers related to HIV. People living with HIV (PLHIV) often experience discrimination, which may impact their quality of life (QoL) and their ability to engage effectively with healthcare providers. This study aimed to evaluate the QoL of PLHIV in Lebanon, examine their experiences with stigma, and assess how their relationships with physicians influence their access to care and information. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 91 Lebanese adults living with H

Strategies and successes of smoking cessation methods in head and neck cancer patients: a systematic review.

Tobacco use and especially smoking tobacco is a key risk factor in the development and the progression of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Continued smoking after diagnosis worsens treatment outcomes, survival rates, and quality of life significantly. This systematic review evaluates the effectiveness of smoking cessation interventions in HNSCC patients, aiming to provide an evidence-based foundation supporting smoking cessation efforts. A comprehensive search of five databases yielded 2492 studies, of which 11 met the inclusion criteria (total patient number = 1593). These cover

Advancements in smart healthcare in emergency trauma care: from intelligent triage to prognostic prediction.

Emergency trauma care demands rapid, accurate decisions across the continuum from prehospital triage to definitive treatment and follow-up. Smart healthcare technologies, particularly artificial intelligence (AI) and telemedicine, are increasingly being integrated into trauma systems to augment clinical judgment, improve resource allocation, and expand access to specialist expertise. This mini-review synthesizes recent evidence on the application of these technologies in emergency trauma care. Current studies suggest that AI can support prehospital triage, identify life-threatening injuries on

Retirement: Fostering Physician Well-being Over the Career Life Cycle.

This manuscript is the last chapter in a series of 5 articles considering physician well-being during the course of a career. It focuses on the retirement stage, which follows planning for retirement and deciding when and how to retire. We view retirement as a process, characterized by recalibrating professional and personal activities while maintaining a sense of purpose and meaning in life. Some retirees may continue to work in medicine by seeing patients part-time or mentoring medical students, residents, and junior colleagues. Others may leave their lifelong work and seek joy and meaning i

Sepsis-Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Score in Patients Receiving Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Support for Sepsis.

Predictive scoring systems for adult patients receiving extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support for sepsis have not been yet reported. Based on the Chinese Society of ExtraCorporeal Life Support (CSECLS) Registry database, we conducted a retrospective observational study on adult patients supported with ECMO for sepsis (n = 465). On the basis of multivariable logistic regression analyses, four parameters at 24 h post-ECMO initiation ( T24 ) were identified as prognostic factors associated with in-hospital mortality: age, vasoactive inotropic score (VIS), partial pressure of oxygen i

"It's like having a second job": qualitative insights into the emotional burden of infertility and the need for coordinated care.

Infertility, affecting one in six individuals worldwide, poses substantial emotional and physical challenges. Its impact on quality of life (QoL), mental health and social relationships is well documented. However, qualitative insights into the lived experiences of those affected remain limited, as do the perspectives of health professionals involved in their care. This study presents qualitative findings from a mixed-method approach. Data were collected through 23 semi-structured interviews with 26 affected individuals and three focus group discussions with 20 healthcare professionals. The re

Mechanical Circulatory Support Systems in the Management of Ventricular Arrhythmias: A Contemporary Overview.

Ventricular tachycardias (VTs) and electrical storms (ES) are life-threatening conditions mostly seen in the setting of structural heart disease (SHD). Traditional management strategies, predominantly centered around pharmacological interventions with antiarrhythmic drugs, have demonstrated limited efficacy in these cases, whereas catheter ablation is related with more favorable outcomes. However, patients with hemodynamically unstable, recurrent VT or ES may present cardiogenic shock (CS) that precludes the procedure, and catheter ablation in patients with SHD portends a multifactorial intrin

Accelerating Decarbonization via Tailored Zeolitic Monoliths: Insights into the Interfacial Physics of the Carbon Dioxide Adsorption Process.

Conventional packed bed carbon dioxide capture systems with randomly positioned solid sorbent beads suffer from wall channeling, early breakthroughs, excessive pressure drop penalties, and poor contact-limited thermal transport characteristics. Advanced 3D printing techniques enable monolithic lattice topologies made of sorbent that can be tailored to minimize the shortcomings of conventional packed bed systems. The full potential of the design freedom enabled by sorbent 3D printing can only be realized through a detailed understanding of the interfacial adsorption physics within sorbent latti

Happily Ever After? Life Satisfaction After Childhood Exposure to Violence.

A plethora of research has linked exposure to violence during childhood to negative long-term physical health, mental health, and risk behavior outcomes. Yet, despite estimates that up to 60% of children in the United States will be exposed to violence, little is known about the impact on adult life satisfaction among different racial and ethnic groups, or for different types of violence exposure. This article seeks to explore factors that are associated with life satisfaction in adults who were exposed to family violence or physically abused as a child, while adjusting race, ethnicity, gender

Using Nominal Group Technique to Gather Recommendations in the Decision-Making for Amputation Due to Diabetes.

INTRODUCTION: A lower extremity amputation has traditionally been considered as a last resort treatment option for people with a diabetes-related foot ulcer (DFU). However, some people will opt for an earlier amputation to overcome the daily lifestyle challenges from ongoing conservative wound management. Even so, making the decision for non-emergency amputation is challenging due to the lack of clear recommendations or evidence-based resources. Therefore, this study aimed to gather recommendations from people with lived experience of a DFU or amputation, family members, health practitioners,
