Models of care for tuberculosis infection screening and treatment in primary care: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Tuberculosis infection (TBI) screening and treatment delivered from primary care could hold the key to achieving tuberculosis (TB) elimination in low TB burden countries. This scoping review was undertaken to understand how elements of the cascade of care for TBI screening and treatment have been implemented in primary care settings globally. METHOD: For this review, eight databases were searched, including PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, Global Index Medicus, Scopus, Web of Science, ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Global and the Cochrane Library, to examine models of care

Screening of coexisting depression or anxiety disorders among Danish patients with alcohol use disorder in outpatient treatment.

BACKGROUND: Depression and anxiety are highly prevalent among patients seeking outpatient treatment for alcohol use disorders (AUD) and if depression and anxiety are addressed the prognosis is improved. Screening instruments for depression and anxiety have been validated in populations suffering from drug use disorders, but not in populations suffering from AUD. The aim of this study was to validate four self-administrated screening instruments (PHQ-9, GAD-7, Kessler-6, and SRQ) and calculate the optimal cut-off value for identifying depression and anxiety. METHODS: The study included 73 pati

Non-invasive detection of total bilirubin based on multi-wavelength PPG signal.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Abnormal bilirubin metabolism can result in various liver function disorders. Current clinical practice for bilirubin level detection involves invasive blood collection from patients, which is time-consuming, painful, and poses infection risks. Thus, there is a pressing need for non-invasive bilirubin detection methods. This study aims to develop a non-invasive total serum bilirubin(TSB) detection method in humans based on multi-wavelength photoplethysmography (PPG) signals. METHODS: The experimental instrument includes a light source and a spectrometer. PPG signals

Significance of borderline HbA2 levels in β thalassemia carrier screening.

Increased HbA2 levels are the characteristic feature of β-thalassemia carriers. A subset of carriers however do not show HbA2 levels in the typical carrier range (≥ 4.0%) but show borderline HbA2 levels. As a result, these carriers escape diagnosis and carry the risk of having β-thalassemia major offspring. Borderline HbA2 values may occur as a consequence of mild β-thalassemia mutations, co-inherited β-thalassemia and α- or δ- thalassemia or iron deficiency anemia. However, there is insufficient knowledge regarding the cause of borderline HbA2 levels in specific populations. This study aimed

Digital health use in latent tuberculosis infection care: A systematic review.

PURPOSE: With one-quarter of the world's population estimated to have latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI), it is important that the drop-outs from the LTBI cascade of care are minimized. Digital health technology could play an important role in case detection and treatment adherence. This study aims to evaluate the use and impact of digital health technology in LTBI care. METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted on six electronic databases from database inception until May 31st 2021. Studies that reported on the clinical use or economic analysis of digital health technology for

Impact and benefit-cost ratio of a program for the management of latent tuberculosis infection among refugees in a region of Canada.

INTRODUCTION: The identification and treatment of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) among immigrants from high-incidence regions who move to low-incidence countries is generally considered an ineffective strategy because only ≈14% of them comply with the multiple steps of the 'cascade of care' and complete treatment. In the Estrie region of Canada, a refugee clinic was opened in 2009. One of its goals is LTBI management. METHODS: Key components of this intervention included: close collaboration with community organizations, integration within a comprehensive package of medical care for the

Geographical inequality in service utilization for primary aldosteronism screening: spatial epidemiological study in Southern Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Primary aldosteronism (PA), the most common cause of secondary hypertension is considered as a "major public health issue" due to higher risk of cardiovascular complications compared to blood-pressure-match hypertension and increase in prevalence around the world. In Thailand, though PA screening is provided under the universal health coverage, the service can be offered only at some centers. Hence, the service availability affects an accessibility of health care in patients. Our study aimed to evaluate the service utilization in PA screening and diagnosis in terms of geographical

From the Defense Health Board: Military Accessions and the Continuum of Mental Health Research.

The Defense Health Board conducted a year-long examination of mental health accession screening and related issues. In its August 2020 report, Examination of Mental Health Accession Screening: Predictive Value of Current Measures and Processes, the Board recommends a paradigm shift in how mental health impacts on readiness are understood and addressed. This shift can only occur with the development and implementation of a research plan that follows cohorts of military personnel from recruitment through their military career. The following article describes this research plan as an excerpt of t

Severe mental illness in cancer is associated with disparities in psycho-oncological support.

Patients with both cancer and a severe mental illness (SMI) have a higher risk of advanced stage cancer at diagnosis and poorer survival in comparison to individuals with cancer alone. The present study explores if similar disparities exist in terms of psycho-oncological support. Latent class analysis (LCA) was used to group 10,945 patients with any type of cancer, of which 72 (0.7%) had been diagnosed with a SMI (ICD10-codes F20-F22, F24, F25, F28-F31, F32.3, F33.3), and 1056 (9.6%) with another mental disorder. Subgrouping was based on presence of SMI, other mental illnesses, stage of cancer

Screening for Eating Disorders in Adolescents and Adults: US Preventive Services Task Force Recommendation Statement.

IMPORTANCE: Eating disorders (eg, binge eating disorder, bulimia nervosa, and anorexia nervosa) are a group of psychiatric conditions defined as a disturbance in eating or eating-related behaviors that impair physical or psychosocial functioning. According to large US cohort studies, estimated lifetime prevalences for anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder in adult women are 1.42%, 0.46%, and 1.25%, respectively, and are lower in adult men (anorexia nervosa, 0.12%; bulimia nervosa, 0.08%; binge eating disorder, 0.42%). Eating disorder prevalence ranges from 0.3% to 2.3% i

No Recommendation Is (at Least Presently) the Best Recommendation: An Updating Quality Appraisal of Recommendations on Screening for Scoliosis.

Recommendations addressing screening for scoliosis differ substantially. Systematically developed guidelines are confronted by consensus and opinion-based statements. This paper elaborates on the issue of the standards of development and reporting of current guidelines and recommendation statements, as well as on the methodological quality of the corresponding evidence syntheses. The SORT classification and the AMSTAR 2 tool were used for those purposes, respectively. Publications included in the analysis differed substantially in terms of their methodological quality. Based on the SORT and AM
