Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) has been shown to be highly effective in reducing the risk of HIV infection in gay and bisexual men who have sex with men (GbMSM). However, PrEP does not protect against other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). In some populations, PrEP has also led to riskier behavior such as reduced condom usage, with the result that the prevalence of bacterial STIs like gonorrhea has increased. Here, we develop a compartmental model of the transmission of HIV and gonorrhea and the impacts of PrEP, condom usage, STI testing frequency and potential changes in sexual risk b

We develop an age-structured ODE model to investigate the role of intermittent preventive treatment (IPT) in averting malaria-induced mortality in children, and its related cost in promoting the spread of antimalarial drug resistance. IPT, a malaria control strategy in which a full curative dose of an antimalarial medication is administered to vulnerable asymptomatic individuals at specified intervals, has been shown to reduce malaria transmission and deaths in children and pregnant women. However, it can also promote drug resistance spread. Our mathematical model is used to explore IPT effect

BACKGROUND: Remarkably few studies have investigated the nature and origin of learning difficulties in children with cerebral palsy (CP).
AIMS: To investigate math achievement in terms of word-problem solving ability in children with CP and controls. Because of the potential importance of reading for word-problem solving, we investigated reading as well.
SAMPLE: Children with CP attending either special (n= 41) or mainstream schools (n= 16) and a control group of typically developing children in mainstream schools (n= 16).
METHOD: Group differences in third grade math and reading, controlle

Mathematical models of plague dynamics provide insight into zoonotic transmission processes and epidemic persistence but often neglect stochastic effects and seasonal variability. In this study, we examine how seasonal variability influences zoonotic disease transmission through a rat-flea-human plague model. Periodic environmental forcing modulates rat abundance, flea survival, and biting activity, generating time-dependent rates that capture realistic ecological seasonality. To represent demographic randomness, we formulate a continuous-time Markov chain (CTMC) model and apply a multi-type b

The present study aims to clarify the role of the fraction of patients under antiretroviral therapy (ART) achieving viral suppression (VS) (i.e. having plasma viral load below the detectability threshold) on the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) epidemic in Italy. Based on the hypothesis that VS makes the virus untransmittable, we extend a previous model and we develop a time-varying ordinary differential equation model with immigration and treatment, where the naive and non-naive populations of infected are distinguished, and different compartments account for treated subjects virally suppre

Dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) can occur in primary dengue virus infection of infants [Formula: see text] year of age. To understand the presumed role of maternal dengue-specific antibodies received until birth in the development of this primary DHF in infants, we investigated a mathematical model based on a system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations that mimics cells, virus and antibodies interactions. The neutralization and enhancement activities of maternal antibodies against the virus are represented by a function derived from experimental data and knowledge from the medical liter

A major question in immunology is what role antigen load plays in determining the size of the CD8 immune response. Is the amount of antigen important during recruitment, proliferation, and/or memory formation? Animal studies have shown that antigen is only strictly required early during activation of T cells, but the importance of antigen at later timepoints is unclear. Using data from 24 volunteers infected with the yellow fever vaccine virus (YFV), we analyzed the dependence of T cell proliferation upon viral load. We found that volunteers with high viral load initially have greater T cell r

Adaptive immunity relies on the generation and maintenance of memory T cells to provide protection against repeated antigen exposure. It has been hypothesised that a self-renewing population of T cells, named stem cell-like memory T (TSCM) cells, are responsible for maintaining memory. However, it is not clear if the dynamics of TSCM cells in vivo are compatible with this hypothesis. To address this issue, we investigated the dynamics of TSCM cells under physiological conditions in humans in vivo using a multidisciplinary approach that combines mathematical modelling, stable isotope labelling,

In this paper, we propose control strategies for multigroup epidemic models. We use compartmental [Formula: see text] models to study the dynamics of n host groups sharing the same source of infection in addition to the transmission among members of the same group. In particular, we consider a model for infectious diseases with free-living pathogens in the environment and a metapopulation model with a central patch. We give the detailed derivation of the target reproduction number under three public health interventions and provide the corresponding biological insights. Moreover, using the nex

Metastasis is the rapid proliferation of cancer cells (secondary tumour) at a specific place, generally leading to death. This occurs at anatomical parts providing the necessary environment for vascularity, oxygen and food to hide their actions and trigger the rapid growth of cancer. Prostate and breast cancers, for example, use bone marrow for their proliferation. Bone-supporting cancer cells thus adapt to the environment, mimicking the behaviour of genetic and molecular bone cells. Evidence of this has been given in Cecchini et al. (2005, EAU Update Ser. 3:214-226), providing arguments such

Biologists often wish to explain why one trait is more common than its alternatives among species in a clade: is it due to asymmetries in diversification or character evolution processes? State-dependent speciation-extinction (SSE) models provide a flexible framework for jointly modeling such processes. Here, we derive mathematical results that define functional relationships ("rulesets") among rate parameters, establish a mapping between rulesets and evolutionary scenarios, and characterize how these scenarios give rise to different long-term tip state distributions. In particular, we show th

Homology is a mathematical concept involving two Betti numbers-b0, representing the number of independent objects, and b1, representing the number of holes formed by surrounding objects-which can be used to quantify the contact degree. We previously demonstrated the use of a homology-based method to diagnose advanced colorectal cancer. It is clinically important to discriminate adenoma, especially high-grade adenoma, and early-stage cancer from non-cancerous tissue; thus, it was of interest to evaluate whether our homology-based method could also diagnose adenoma and early-stage cancer. In the

The study of flow and transformation of energy and nutrients via mathematical modelling provides an in silico tool approach for designing scientific experiments, improving precision in aquaculture production and reducing the need for experimental animals. The proposed nutritional bioenergetics model is based on the dynamic energy budget (DEB) theory, a mechanistic framework to study individual metabolism. The model is an extension of the typical DEB models in that it includes a digestion module where the protein and non-protein food components contribute to assimilation via the concept of a sy

Viruses transmitted by mosquitoes threaten the health of millions of people worldwide. There is an urgent need for new tools for personal protection to ensure that vulnerable individuals are protected from infectious bites when outdoors. Here, we test the efficacy of wash-in and spray-on repellents against Aedes aegypti. When applied as a treatment on clothing as well as skin, the novel repellent compound delta-undecalactone provided up to 100% protection initially, and over 50% bite prevention for more than 7 hours. Mathematical modelling indicated that if such a repellent, with 100% initial

Pramlintide, an amylin analog, has been coming up as an agent in type 1 diabetes dual-hormone therapies (insulin/pramlintide). Since pramlintide slows down gastric emptying, it allows for easing glucose control and reducing the burden of meal announcements. Pre-clinical in silico evaluations are a key step in the development of any closed-loop strategy. However, mathematical models are needed, and pramlintide models in the literature are scarce. This work proposes a proof-of-concept pramlintide model, describing its subcutaneous pharmacokinetics (PK) and its effect on gastric emptying (PD). Th

BACKGROUND: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-associated mucormycosis (CAM) is a relatively new concept in the literature that emerged during the pandemic. Bibliometric analysis is a type of analysis that uses mathematical and statistical methods to study the formal properties of knowledge areas. This study aimed to reveal the main themes, conceptual structures, and trends of bibliometric studies on mucormycosis in 2 different periods, pre-and during the pandemic.
METHODS: This study consisted of 2 periods: pre-COVID-19 and COVID-19. Articles were collected from the Web of Science (WOS) Cor

Health outcomes of in utero Ramadan exposure have been reported in a systematic literature review; however, the available literature on long-term effects were not fully covered. Our study aims to specifically review the long-term outcomes of in utero Ramadan exposure. We searched for original research articles analyzing any long-term outcome of in utero Ramadan exposure, excluding maternal and perinatal outcomes. Sixteen studies from 8304 non-duplicate search results were included. Most studies suggest negative consequences from in utero Ramadan exposure on health, as well as on economic outco

This study explored the longitudinal association between early shared reading and children's later school achievement. We also examined the mediating role of children's academic school readiness and the moderating effect of family socioeconomic status. Data were drawn from the Longitudinal Study of Australian Children (n = 4,768). Frequency of shared reading and academic school readiness were assessed at the ages of 2-3 and 4-5. School achievement was assessed at age 8-9 via standardized national tests of school literacy and mathematics achievement. Results indicated that early shared reading

Neonatal encephalopathy (NE) resulting from birth asphyxia constitutes a major global public health burden for millions of infants every year, and despite therapeutic hypothermia, half of these neonates have poor neurological outcomes. As new neuroprotective interventions are being studied in clinical trials, there is a critical need to establish physiological surrogate markers of therapeutic efficacy, to guide patient selection and/or to modify the therapeutic intervention. The challenge in the field of neonatal brain injury has been the difficulty of clinically discerning NE severity within
