A Dynamic Navigation-Assisted Transcrestal Sinus Floor Elevation in Severely Atrophic Maxillae: A Descriptive Case Series.

BACKGROUND: Transcrestal sinus floor elevation (tSFE) and lateral window sinus floor elevation (lSFE) are established techniques for implant placement in the atrophic posterior maxilla. While lSFE is traditionally indicated for residual bone height (RBH) < 5 mm, tSFE offers the advantage of reduced surgical trauma but is typically limited to cases with RBH > 5 mm due to the lack of direct visualization, which can compromise membrane integrity and implant positioning accuracy. Dynamic computer-aided implant surgery (dCAIS) has been introduced to address these limitations, but its effectiveness …

In vivo deviation of residual ridge between digital and conventional impressions in the partially edentulous maxilla: a pilot study.

PURPOSE: This in vivo study aims to investigate the deviation of the residual ridge between digital and conventional impressions in the partially edentulous maxilla. METHODS: Forty-four patients (22 female, 22 male; 64.8 ± 6.6 years) with partially edentulous maxillae were included in the study. Digital impressions were obtained using an intraoral scanner (TRIOS 3, 3Shape). Conventional impressions were taken with a selective pressure impression technique using the custom tray and a silicone rubber impression material. These impressions were poured with type 4 gypsum. Models were scanned usin…

Clinical and Radiographic Evaluation of Plasma Rich in Growth Factors (PRGF) for Alveolar Ridge Preservation in the Anterior Maxilla.

Tooth extraction followed by alveolar ridge resorption may compromise the aesthetics and future implant placement, especially in the anterior maxilla. This comparative clinical study assessed the effectiveness of Plasma Rich in Growth Factors (PRGF) for alveolar socket preservation compared with Spontaneous Healing (SH). Twenty extraction sockets were allocated to either of the groups (n = 10 each) and followed for 3 months. Both groups demonstrated dimensional changes following extraction;however, PRGF-treated sockets showed significantly better preservation of the horizontal ridge width at t…

Evaluation of Titanium Particles, TNF-α, and Caspase-3 Concentrations in Patients with Bones Fixations of the Maxilla and Mandibule.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of titanium implants (Ti6Al4V) on the surrounding tissues by analyzing the concentration of titanium particles, TNF-α, and caspase-3 in patients treated for jaw fractures and dentofacial deformities. The research material consisted of peri-implant tissues: fragments of periosteum adhering to a titanium miniplate and blood serum collected from 42 patients treated for mandibular fractures (Group I), and dentofacial deformities (Group II) who underwent bimaxillary osteotomy. The control group consisted of 24 generally healthy patients before bimaxil…

CLEAR CELL VARIANT OF AMELOBLASTIC CARCINOMA OF THE MAXILLA: A CASE REPORT AND REVIEW OF DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSTIC AND THERAPEUTIC APPROACH.

Ameloblastic carcinoma is a rare malignant epithelial tumor, mostly affecting the mandible. Maxillary ameloblastic carcinoma is even more uncommon and its clear cell variant has been exceedingly rarely described. Because clear cell lesions of jaw bones are both rare and diagnostically challenging, the incidence of the tumor, as well as the criteria for classification are not precisely defined. Differential diagnosis includes a variety of benign or malignant tumors of odontogenic and salivary gland origin, as well as metastatic tumors. Diagnostic dilemma extends to therapeutic approach. Treatme…

Difference in Buccal Gingival Thickness between the Mandible and Maxilla in the Aesthetic Zone: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Background: Fragile gingival tissue is a risk factor for the development of gingival recessions. Despite the fact that gingival recessions are more commonly seen around anterior mandibular teeth, previous research has predominantly concentrated on the gingival dimensions in the anterior maxilla. The objective was to systematically compare buccal gingival thicknesses between the upper and lower jaws in individuals with healthy gingival conditions in the aesthetic zone. Methods: A comprehensive search of three databases was carried out until October 2023. Gingival thickness differences between t…

Central dentinogenic ghost cell tumor of the maxilla: a case report with new imaging findings and review of the literature.

A dentinogenic ghost cell tumor (DGCT) is a rare benign odontogenic tumor that commonly shows characteristics of solid proliferation and has a relatively high risk of recurrence after surgical treatment. We herein report a case of a central DGCT that occurred in the maxilla and resulted in bone expansion. This study highlights new imaging findings (particularly magnetic resonance imaging) along with histopathological observations. In addition, we conducted a review of the existing literature on this rare tumor. A 37-year-old man developed swelling around the right cheek. A benign odontogenic t…

Concurrent Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma and Bisphosphonate-Related Osteonecrosis of the Maxilla: A Case Report and Literature Review.

INTRODUCTION: Bisphosphonates (BPs) are widely used for osteoporosis and cancer-induced bone diseases due to their antiresorptive properties, yet they pose risks such as medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ). METHODS: We present a unique case of concurrent oral squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and MRONJ in a 72-year-old female chronically treated with oral ibandronate for osteoporosis. Following a dental extraction, she developed a nonhealing wound in the maxilla. Following conservative treatment, the patient underwent a maxillectomy and extensive tissue reconstructions to control …

Chondroblastic Osteosarcoma of the Maxilla with Poor Response to Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy: A Rare Case Report and Updated Review of Literature.

Craniofacial osteosarcoma is a relatively rare disease entity. In the craniofacial region, mandible is the commonest site followed by maxilla and skull bone. Due to its rare occurrence standard treatment guidelines are not formulated as in long bone or extremity sarcoma. Here we have reported a locally advanced case of a maxillary osteosarcoma of chondroblastic variant who was initially considered for neoadjuvant chemotherapy. However there was radiological evience of disease progression. Then the patient was considered for surgery followed by adjuvant radiotherapy. A literature review of the …

Central giant cell granuloma of the maxilla: Long-term follow-up of a patient treated with an adjuvant corticosteroid.

BACKGROUND: Central giant cell granuloma (CGCG) is one of the most intriguing lesions of the jaws and its nature has not yet been fully elucidated. Clinically, some CGCG behave more aggressively, while others have an indolent course. In cases of aggressive CGCG of the maxilla, effective personalized therapies are worth understanding. CASE REPORT: We report here a challenging case of aggressive CGCG in a 15-year-old girl which was misdiagnosed as an endodontic lesion. Radiographically, a large osteolytic lesion involving the hard palate from the central incisor to the second premolar, extendin…
