OBJECTIVE: To assess the frequency of the lacrimal recess in the maxillary sinus (MS) in computed tomography (CT) of the paranasal sinuses.
METHODS: CT of the paranasal sinuses (CT PNS) done in a total of 78 patients. According to the discoveries, the MS were classified in two types: anterior or lateral.
RESULTS: 41 CT PNS of 41 patients of a total of 78 patients preselected were excluded. 37 CT of the paranasal sinuses from 37 patients, in a total of 68 maxillary sinuses were studied. In the 33 right maxillary sinuses, 10 lacrimal recesses were found, 9 from male patients. Eleven left maxil…

Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is an inflammation of the nose and paranasal sinuses lasting for ≥12 weeks. Endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) is considered during difficult to treat CRS. The minimally invasive technique focuses on the transition areas rather than on the ostia. The aim of this study was to evaluate symptoms, the number of acute sinusitis episodes, and satisfaction after ESS with either preservation or enlargement of the maxillary sinus ostium. Thirty patients with moderate nonpolypous CRS were enrolled. Uncinectomy only and additional middle meatal antrostomy were randomized for each…

Surgery has evolved along with anatomical illustrations through the ages. Joseph Gensoul (1797-1858), an important figure of the great Lyonn … the "before" and "after" phases of Gensoul's most eminent operation, most probably practiced for a maxillary sinus carcinoma. This surgical operation is probably the earliest recorded of its kind in the history of surgery, even though the development of maxillary surgery is connected with the practice of Irwin Moure, who also practiced a type of lateral rhinotom …

AIM: To characterize the computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of inflammatory myofibroblastic tumours (IMTs) of the maxillary sinus.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The imaging findings of eight patients with IMTs of the maxillary sinus were reviewed retrospectively. Of the eight patients, four patients underwent unenhanced and contrast-enhanced CT, and one patient underwent unenhanced CT only; three patients underwent unenhanced and contrast-enhanced MRI.
RESULTS: Five cases of IMTs occurred in the left maxillary sinus, while three cases were right-sided. Four cases…

Head and neck cancers account for less than 5% of all cancers worldwide and for less than 1% of all cancer deaths in Romania. Sinonasal squamous cell carcinomas are malignant tumors with origin in the respiratory mucosa of the paranasal sinuses and the nasal cavity. Because of the proximity to different important structures such as the brain, the eye the relevance of a multimodal therapy is well known. We take into discussion not only the most recent data from novel agents targeting EGF receptor (EGFR), VEGF and p53 pathways for the management of sinonasal cancer, but also further development

A 52-year-old woman presented to the ENT clinic with a huge swelling on the right side of her face that had originated 6 years earlier. The mass was ultimately diagnosed as a carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma of the maxillary sinus. Carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma itself is uncommon, and its origin in the maxillary sinus is very rare. We discuss the presentation, histopathologic picture, and management of this case.

UNLABELLED: In an attempt to improve the quality of life of patients with vitreous humor disease, ophthalmologists began offering steroid-eluting biodegradable implants to their patients. These implants can be used as an alternative treatment for CRS and this is why this experimental study was carried out on rabbit maxillary sinuses.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to assess the histology of the mucosa of the maxillary sinuses of rabbits after the placement of a prednisolone-eluting biodegradable implant.
METHOD: Eighteen rabbits were randomly divided into two groups: group 1 - subjects had drug-…

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory pseudotumours are mostly seen in the lung, and occasionally in the head and neck region including the sinonasal area. Reported treatment modalities comprise corticosteroid treatment, surgical excision and radiotherapy. The latter option is required because wide surgical resection may be difficult for head and neck lesions, especially in children. However, clinicians should be aware of the risk of late-onset side effects of radiotherapy in children.
CASE REPORT: We present a two-year-old girl with a massive inflammatory pseudotumour of the maxillary sinus. Transcathete…

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to describe the standard diagnostic procedure and the application of the Caldwell-Luc approach for the retrieval of a displaced root from the maxillary sinus and to share our experience in treating this complication.
STUDY DESIGN: Twenty-four patients with a fractured root accidentally displaced into the maxillary sinus were referred by general dentists to our department from 2005 to 2008. All were managed by a standardized diagnostic procedure and a Caldwell-Luc approach. We recorded the age of each patient, the gender, the tooth, the size of root fragmen…

Sarcomatoid carcinomas are rare tumors. These tumors have been reported at other sites, but head and neck origin is extremely uncommon. We report here a rare case of sarcomatoid carcinoma involving the maxilla. Only four such cases with maxillary origin have been discussed in English literature earlier. As compared to squamous cell carcinoma of maxilla, this variant is associated with poor prognosis and advanced disease at presentation, as was also seen in our case. There are no standard recommendations for management owing to the rarity of this histology. Surgery and radiotherapy form the mai

The case of a 74-year-old female is reported. The patient was under long-term review for melanosis affecting the mucosa of the upper right alveolar ridge. The patient developed a primary mucosal melanoma at the site 5 years later and underwent a right maxillectomy and a modified right neck dissection to level 5 nodes. The defect was covered with an obturator; the patient is at present clinically disease free. Mucosal melanomas account for 1% of all melanomas reported. This is a more aggressive tumor than the cutaneous melanoma, which is reflected in the low survival rate of 3 years (approximat

In nonimmunocompromised patients aspergillosis of the paranasal sinuses is a relatively rare disease. Root canal treated teeth with overextension of the root canal sealer or solid materials such as gutta-percha or silver cones into the sinus might be the main etiological factor for aspergillosis of the maxillary sinus in healthy patients. Root-filling materials based zinc oxide-eugenol is considered to be a growth factor for aspergillus. Aspergillus fumigatus needs heavy metals such as zinc oxide for proliferation and metabolism. Prognostic and histological studies showed that instrumentation …

OBJECTIVES: Endodontic infections of posterior maxillary teeth sometimes spread to the maxillary sinus, generating severe complications. The aim of this study is to present the various problems encountered during endodontic treatment of these teeth.
METHODS: The files of 125 cases of odontogenic chronic maxillary sinusitis were reviewed retrospectively.
RESULTS: Chronic apical periodontitis was the cause in 99 cases and traumatising endodontic treatment in 26 cases. Foreign intra-sinusal bodies were occasionally seen as a consequence of different endodontic treatments of posterior maxillary …
