Comparison of standard radiography and computed tomography in 21 dogs with maxillary masses.

Imaging of patients with oral cancer is required to determine tumor extension in order to assist in prognosis and surgical planning. Conventional screen-film radiography (SFR) used to be the most common method for oral assessment, but computed tomography (CT) has become more available and is being used for obtaining complementary information. CT examinations eliminate superimposition by acquiring cross-sectional images of the region of interest. The objective of this study was to determine the diagnostic value of SFR compared with CT examinations for evaluation of oral masses in dogs. Twenty-o

Caldwell-Luc operation without inferior meatal antrostomy: a retrospective study of 50 cases.

PURPOSE: In the standard Caldwell-Luc operation, an inferior meatal antrostomy is performed to promote sinus drainage. However, inferior meatal antrostomy has been criticized for its additional operation time and wound, early loss of the opening, and risk of injury to the nasolacrimal duct. This study retrospectively reviewed the results of the Caldwell-Luc operation without inferior meatal antrostomy in the treatment of odontogenic maxillary sinusitis or odontogenic sinus disease. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The records of 50 patients who had an odontogenic sinus disease and underwent the Caldwell

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma with paranasal sinus invasion: the prognostic significance and the evidence-based study basis of its T-staging category according to the AJCC staging system.

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the prognostic significance of paranasal sinus invasion for patients with NPC and to provide empirical proofs for the T-staging category of paranasal sinus invasion according to the AJCC staging system for nasopharyngeal carcinoma. METHODS: The clinical records and imaging studies of 770 consecutive patients with newly diagnosed, untreated, and nondisseminated NPC were reviewed retrospectively. The overall survival, distant metastasis-free survival, and local relapse-free survival of these patients were analyzed using the Kaplan-Meier method, and the differences were c

Utility of the Milan System for Reporting Salivary Gland Cytopathology in fine needle aspiration cytology of minor salivary gland lesions.

INTRODUCTION: Salivary gland lesions are routinely evaluated by fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) preoperatively. The Milan System for Reporting Salivary Gland Cytopathology (MSRSGC) has standardized salivary gland FNAC reporting. Its application in major salivary glands (MSGs) has been well-established; however, its utility in minor salivary glands (MiSGs) is not well-known. We studied the utility of MSRSGC in MiSG FNAC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective search of MiSG FNACs from 2 academic institutions (2006-2023) was performed. FNACs were classified using the MSRSGC. Histologic d

The inverted Schneiderian papilloma: a clinical and pathological study.

Inverted papillomas which arise from the lining membranes of the nose and paranasal sinuses are relatively unfamiliar lesions which have been reported in the literature under a variety of titles. The uncertainly surrounding their etiology, their relationship to nasal polyps and their malignant potential have resulted in an ill-defined clinical approach to their management. The designation Inverted Schneiderian Papilloma is suggested as an appropriate title that best conveys the qualities of inversion, location and distinctiveness of character. The characteristic microscopic feature is the incr

SMARCB1-Deficient Sinonasal Carcinoma: Systematic Review and Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: To describe the current state of literature involving SMARCB1/INI-1 deficient sinonasal carcinoma (SDSC) and examine a case at our institution. METHODS: A systematic search was performed using the Population, Intervention, Comparator, Outcome, and Study Design approach. Search criteria included all occurrences in the title or abstract of the terms: "integrase interactor 1 deficient," "INI1 deficient," or "SMARCB1 deficient" and "sinonasal carcinoma." The main outcomes were disease-free survival, all-cause mortality, rates of recurrence, or metastases. RESULTS: Systematic search

Dose-finding and efficacy confirmation trial of superselective intra-arterial infusion of cisplatin and concomitant radiotherapy for patients with locally advanced maxillary sinus cancer (JCOG1212, RADPLAT-MSC).

A dose-finding and efficacy confirmation trial was started in Japan in April 2014 to evaluate the efficacy and safety of superselective intra-arterial infusion of cisplatin and concomitant radiotherapy for locally advanced maxillary sinus cancer. A total of 18 patients will be enrolled in the dose-finding phase for the determination of the recommended number of cisplatin cycles, and 65 patients with T4aN0M0 and 62 patients with T4bN0M0, including those who received the recommended number of or fewer cycles in the dose-finding phase, will be enrolled from 16 institutions within a 5-year period

Sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma, or schneiderian carcinoma arising from an aspergillosis: a case history.

The sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma or schneiderian carcinoma is a rare, malignant, aggressive tumour of the maxillary sinuses with an unknown aetiology. Its site and clinical symptoms can simulate chronic sinusitis, and radiographs suggest severe osteonecrotic-type destruction. Only histological and cellular investigations can confirm the diagnosis. We describe a 62-year-old woman with no previous medical or surgical history who presented with unilateral dental pain and chronic sinusitis. She was diagnosed with sinonasal carcinoma and had a hemimaxillectomy and radiotherapy.

Description of a neural sheath tumor of the trigeminal nerve: immunohistochemical and electron microscopy study.

CONTEXT: Malignant neural sheath tumors of the trigeminal nerve affecting the nasal cavity and the paranasal sinuses are extremely rare. With conventional optical microscopy, their identification is difficult, and it is necessary to confirm them by means of electron microscopy and immunohistochemical techniques. CASE REPORT: The patient was a 41-year-old woman with a ten-month progressive history of pain followed by painful edema in the left facial region, and with symptoms of bleeding, secretion and nasal obstruction. Studies with imaging methods suggested the presence of an expansive proces

Management pitfalls in the use of embolization for the treatment of severe epistaxis.

Angiographic embolization for the treatment of severe recurrent epistaxis was added to the traditional treatment options--nasal packing, cauterization, and surgical vessel ligation--in 1974. Since then, clinical experience has shown that this procedure is safe and effective. When epistaxis cannot be controlled with cautery, nasal packing is the most common next step. As such, it is often performed by emergency physicians and other clinicians who are not otolaryngologists. We report two cases in which intranasal neoplasms were obscured as a result of a significant distortion of the normal anato

Acinic cell carcinoma of maxillary sinus.

Acinic cell carcinoma is a tumor that occurs most commonly in the parotid glands. We have experienced a rare case of acinic cell carcinoma of the left maxillary sinus. The patient was a 71-year-old female. She noticed her left nasal congestion and epiphora from left eye in April 1994. She had a history of left maxillary sinus surgery in February, 1972. Antrotomy was performed and histopathological examination of specimen from the maxillary sinus proved acinic cell carcinoma. The tumor was considered to be the recurrence 22 years after initial surgery, because it coincided with the surgical spe

[The diagnostic value of computed coronal tomography in maxillofacial tumors].

CT images in both transverse axial and coronal planes of 52 cases of maxillofacial tumors were analyzed. The authors emphasized that coronal technique should not be neglected, especially when the tumor was near the base of the skull, the sphenoid sinus and the hard palate. Transverse axial scan alone could not demonstrate the exact extent of invasion and the adjacent relationship. Coronal scan affords exceptional visualization. In such conditions, the combination of scans in two planes is the most helpful in delineating such lesions. It provides important information for determining surgical o

Polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma of the maxillary sinus.

Polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma (PLGA) is a rare tumor, mostly affecting the minor salivary glands of the oral cavity. We report a case of PLGA which occurred within the maxillary sinus in a 59-year-old woman. The tumor was resected through a transnasal endoscopic approach with wide margins. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case with primary PLGA of the maxillary sinus.

Stage IV primitive-appearing sinus and orbital rhabdomyosarcoma presenting in a 68-year-old female previously treated for breast cancer.

A 68-year-old female who had undergone treatment several years previously for breast cancer presented with diplopia and unilateral proptosis and exposure keratopathy related to biopsy-proven rhabdomyosarcoma of the sinus and orbit. Further evaluation revealed multiple metastatic lesions felt to have originated from the primary sinus and orbital tumor. Histopathologic examination showed primitive-appearing rhabdomyosarcoma with some features suggestive of the alveolar subtype. Orbital or sinus rhabdomyosarcoma is seen almost exclusively in the pediatric population, but may very rarely occur in

Single photon emission computerized tomography of the skull.

The diagnostic contribution of single photon emission tomography for detection of bone lesions of the skull was explored in 125 cases and compared with planar imaging. Twenty-one localizations (16% of the total group) were only visualized by scintitomography, these were predominantly lesions of the base of the skull and facial bones. Scintitomography gave a false negative result in only one lesion out of 49 visible on skull radiographs. Together with the revelation of unsuspected bone abnormalities, SPECT generally provides a better visualization of the skull lesions and their extent than does

Three cases of osteoma and an osseous fibroma of the paranasal sinuses of horses in South Africa.

Four horses were presented to the Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital with histories of facial asymmetry, nasal discharge or obstruction of normal nasal passage airflow. Radiographic examination of the maxillary sinuses of 2 cases revealed well circumscribed, unilateral, mineralised masses; the other 2 cases showed less mineralisation. The masses were accessed for further investigation by surgically created frontonasal bone flaps or trephination of the maxillary sinuses. Diagnosis of osteoma was confirmed histopathologically in 3 of the cases and of ossifying fibroma in the 4th. Two hor
