Facial skin fistula as a postoperative complication related to maxillary sinus grafting: A case report.

Maxillary sinus elevation has become an important surgical procedure in dental implant surgery. This procedure may induce a variety of postoperative complications including infection, perforation of the sinus membrane, and maxillary sinusitis. However, postoperative infections are relatively infrequent. In this report, an unusual form of infection resulting in a facial skin fistula following maxillary sinus elevation is described.

Effect of accessory ostia on maxillary sinus ventilation: a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) study.

We evaluated, by CFD simulation, effects of accessory ostium (AO) on maxillary sinus ventilation. A three-dimensional nasal model was constructed from an adult CT scan with two left maxillary AOs (sinus I) and one right AO (sinus II), then compared to an identical control model with all AOs sealed (sinuses III and IV). Transient simulations of quiet inspiration and expiration at 15 L/min, and nasal blow at 48 L/min, were calculated for both models using low-Reynolds-number turbulent analysis. At low flows, ventilation rates in sinuses with AOs (I ≈ 0.46 L/min, II ≈ 0.54 L/min), were both more

B-mode ultrasonography of the paranasal sinuses compared with CT findings.

Ultrasound as a diagnostic aid in the evaluation of the sinuses has been a controversial issue. Sensitivities have been reported from 29% to 100% and specificities from 55% to 99%. These wide variations in results from previous studies may have resulted from technical differences. However, the "gold standard" most often used for comparison has been a Water's view radiograph, which has been shown to correlate poorly with intraoperative and CT scan findings. To our knowledge, no one in the English language literature has evaluated sonography of the sinuses with computed tomography as the gold st

Rapid remodeling of the maxillary sinus in silent sinus syndrome.

Silent sinus syndrome (SSS) is a rare disorder involving bony remodeling of the maxillary sinuses, including collapse of the orbital floor. It is typically unilateral and seen in the setting of chronic maxillary sinusitis. Patients present with enophthalmos and hypoglobus occasionally accompanied by diplopia. The condition is generally diagnosed with CT imaging and treated surgically. While SSS is most often reported as very slowly progressive, we report a patient with evidence of significant remodeling of the maxillary sinus over a period of 5.5 months.

Assessment of maxillary sinus septa using cone-beam computed tomography: etiological consideration.

BACKGROUND: Septum presence in the maxillary sinus complicates sinus floor elevation surgery, and so it is important that septa are accurately diagnosed on preoperative imaging. PURPOSE: Septa were observed regarding their relationship with the bony palate using cone-beam computed tomography (CT). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty maxillary sinuses with dentate jaws of 15 dry skulls and a cone-beam CT unit were used. A septum was defined as a pointed bone structure, and an exostosis was defined as a rounded bone structure. The occurrence and locations of maxillary sinus septa and exostoses of mo

Maxillary sinus hypoplasia.

Maxillary sinus hypoplasia (MSH) is an uncommonly encountered condition by otolaryngologists. The computerized tomography (CT) scans provide valuable data about the anatomic details of the paranasal sinuses. MSH may be misdiagnosed as an infection or a neoplasm of the maxillary sinuses. Variations of the other paranasal structures, especially the uncinate process associated with MSH were defined. MSH shows three distinct hypoplasia patterns. Type I MSH characteristics are mild hypoplasia of the maxillary sinus, normal uncinate process and a well-developed infundibular passage. Significant hypo

Nasal and paranasal sinus endoscopy. A diagnostic and surgical approach to recurrent sinusitis.

Our endoscopic concept of the diagnosis and surgical treatment of recurrent sinusitis is based on Messerklinger's finding that almost all infections of the frontal and maxillary sinuses are rhinogenic. They are secondary to infection foci in their prechambers in the anterior ethmoid, especially in the ethmoidal infundibulum and the frontal recess, spreading from there to the dependent larger sinuses. Consequently, our functional endoscopic sinus surgery is aimed at these infection foci in the ethmoid, clearing mucosal contact areas, stenotic clefts and diseased cells. Ventilation and drainage

Numerical simulation of unsteady airflow in a nasal cavity for various sizes of maxillary sinus opening in a virtual endoscopic surgery.

Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) is performed to treat sinusitis when treatment with medication fails. In the present study, three different virtual maxillary sinus endoscopic surgeries were performed on a realistic 3-D computational model of the nasal cavity of an adult male under the supervision of a specialist. They included only uncinectomy, uncinectomy + 8mm Middle Meatal Antrostomy (MMA) and uncinectomy + 18 mm MMA. Simulations were performed for two human activity respiratory rates, including rest and moderate activities, and effects of different surgeries and respiratory rate

[Clinical characteristics of chronic sinusitis with different lower respiratory tract diseases].

We determined the clinical characteristics of chronic sinusitis in patients with different lower respiratory tract diseases. Sinusitis was divided into three groups. The first group was sinusitis with bronchial asthma. The second group was sinusitis with chronic bronchitis, bronchiectasis or diffuse panbronchiolitis. This type of sinusitis is generally called sinobronchial syndrome (SBS). The third group was sinusitis without lower respiratory tract disease. Because the pathogenesis of these lower respiratory tract diseases differs with the diseases, the pathogenesis of sinusitis accompanied b

A paradigm for evaluation and management of the maxillary sinus before dental implantation.

OBJECTIVES: To determine a paradigm for evaluating and managing maxillary sinus conditions before dental implantation via preoperative sinonasal assessment. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. METHODS: Eighty-four patients who underwent dental implantation with or without sinus augmentation were included. Maxillary sinus conditions were classified into groups 1 to 6 according to cone-beam computed tomography (CT) findings: 1) nonspecific findings, 2) solitary polyp or cyst, 3) mucosal thickening, 4) air-fluid level or fluid accumulation, 5) near-total opacification of the maxillary or ot

[Diseases of the maxillary sinus: an overview].

Because of the intimate relationship between the maxillary teeth and the maxillary sinus, it is no surprise that odontogenic infections, odontogenic cysts and tumours which have their origin in the mucosa and the bone of the maxilla may extend into the maxillary sinus and, occasionally, into the nasal cavity. Diseases of the maxillary sinus can also extend into the oral cavity and can cause symptoms that mimic those of odontogenic diseases. Important diseases of the maxillary sinus are maxillary sinusitis, oroantral communications, antroliths, cysts and neoplasms.
