Maxillofacial trauma costs emergency departments approximately one billion dollars annually. Facial trauma has increased since 2000 and has been attributed to both increased use of computed tomography and interpersonal violence. Alcohol, male sex, and age 18-35 years are significant risk factors for interpersonal violence. This study is novel in using a large database to look at the effect of alcohol on clinical outcomes in facial trauma. A data analysis was performed in Stata/MP 14.2 using variables coded from the National Trauma Data Bank (NTDB); logistic regression was applied. A total 580,

Associated injuries are a common feature in pediatric facial fractures, which reinforce the importance of a complete initial assessment of a child with facial trauma.Particular kinds of fracture tend to occur at specific anatomic sites in children, with the severity and extent of the fracture varying according to the patient's age and the stage of skeletal development. The frequency of severe fractures increases with age, as does the frequency of surgically treated fractures. Maxillofacial surgical intervention is indicated only for the repair of severely displaced fractures that are likely to

INTRODUCTION: Although orbital compartment syndrome is a rare condition, it is still the most common cause of blindness following simple or complicated facial fractures. Its pathomechanism is similar to the compartment syndrome in the limb. Little extra fluid (blood, oedema, brain, foreign body) in a non-space yielding space results with increasingly higher pressures within a short period of time. Unless urgent surgical intervention is performed the blocked circulation of the central retinal artery will result irreversible ophthalmic nerve damage and blindness. Aim, material and method: A retr

OBJECTIVE: To describe the surgical technique of transmylohyoid orotracheal intubation in surgical management of maxillofacial fractures in dogs.
STUDY DESIGN: Case series.
ANIMALS: Dogs (n = 4) with maxillofacial fractures.
METHODS: Transmylohyoid orotracheal intubation was used for airway management of dogs undergoing surgical repair of maxillofacial trauma. A stoma was surgically created by an incision through the skin, subcutaneous tissue, and mylohyoideus muscle immediately medial to the lingual cortex of the mandible at the level of the mandibular 1st molar tooth, so that an endotrach

Maxillofacial region is an anatomically complex area, representing a crossroads of different systems and apparatus. It is defined as the anatomical region lying on the facial skeleton from the inferior outline of maxilla up to an ideal plane passing through the skull base and the inion point, posteriorly. In this area, the digestive and respiratory systems connect to themselves and open in the mouth and sino-nasal cavities. Even the orbits with the ocular globes and their surrounding tissues lie in the same area. Despite the little exposed surface, the chance of penetrating injuries to this si

One of the prime considerations in the management of maxillofacial trauma is the diagnosis and prevention of acute upper airway obstruction. Each division of the upper aerodigestive tract may cause respiratory obstruction. In the oral cavity, a "flail" mandible, an "Andy Gump" deformity, and a sublingual hematoma may occur. In the nasopharnynx, an impacted midface, a split palate, and a nasopharyngeal hematoma may result. In the oropharynx and hypopharynx, an expanding hematoma in the retropharyngeal or lateral pharyngeal spaces may be seen. Although airway obstruction in maxillofacial trauma

Microscopic study of the human lacrimal ducts places the emphasis on the delicacy and complexity of the relations between the lacrimal muscle and the mobile lacrimal tubular system. The fixed part of the lacrimal ducts (nasolacrimal duct) contracts with the anterior pillar of the face, a fixed relation which inevitably exposes this part to lesions by shearing in the case of anterior maxillofacial trauma. The proximity of the nasolacrimal duct to the piriform cover is such that the duct may be approached surgically by trepanation of the anterior bony surface of the anterior pillar of the face.

BACKGROUND/AIM: This study aims to review contents related to dental maxillofacial trauma (DMT) in the dental curricula of Southeast Asian (SEA) countries and assess their effectiveness in equipping future dental professionals with the necessary skills for the efficient management of DMT. Additionally, the study aims to describe how the academics involved in the planning and organization of these curricula envision the incorporation of DMT within dental education.
METHODS: The study employed a mixed methods approach composed of two phases. Phase 1 involved a review of all printed documentatio

Complex maxillofacial trauma is a challenging problem for even the most experienced reconstructive surgeon. However, advances in presurgical planning, utilization of intraoperative technology, occlusal splints, three dimensional (3D) printing, and creation of custom plates can aid in simplifying challenging cases, decreasing operative time, and optimizing patient outcomes. However, there are limitations to the use of these innovations that surgeons must be aware of. This article will discuss technological advances in maxillofacial trauma.

PURPOSE: To analyze the clinical data of oral emergency cases and the characteristics of oral emergency diseases, and provide clinical basis for improving the quality of oral emergency treatment and making reasonable arrangement.
METHODS: A total of 137 740 patients in oral emergency department from January 1st, 2017 to December 31st, 2018 were collected and analyzed retrospectively according to gender, age, time of visit and diagnosis. The results were analyzed with Chi-square test by Excel 7.0 and SPSS 19.0 software package.
RESULTS: The ratio of men and women was 1.13:1, with an average a

Oral trauma remains a common presentation in a small animal practice. Most fractures are the result of vehicular accidents. Among other causes are falls, kicks, gunshots wounds, and encounters with various hard objects ranging from baseball bats and golf clubs to horse hooves and car doors. Next in popularity are dog fights, especially when a large dog and a small dog are involved, and fights with other animals. With cats, falls from various heights are responsible for a large percentage of presentations.

A chain of events in the development of the dentition following trauma is described. Shortening of the root of the lateral incisor or displacement of the tooth bud, both as a sequel to trauma, may affect the path of eruption of the adjacent canine after dental injury. Special attention should be paid to the further development and eruption of the directly and indirectly affected teeth.

PURPOSE: Lingual nerve injury (LNI) is a frequent complication of oral and maxillofacial surgical procedures. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to synthesize current evidence on the epidemiology, management strategies, and outcomes of LNI.
METHODS: Following PRISMA guidelines, PubMed/MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, Scopus, and Google Scholar were searched for observational studies and clinical trials reporting LNI. Outcomes included etiology of permanent LNI, interventions, timing of repair, and functional sensory recovery (FSR). A single-arm random-effects meta-analysis was performed

INTRODUCTION: Penetrating foreign bodies occurring after maxillofacial injuries are a diagnostic challenge for the trauma surgeon. Different materials and various sites of penetration in the maxillofacial region are described in the literature. We present the peculiar course of a patient with an endoral retained foreign body after a penetrating facial injury. The diagnostic pitfall in this type of trauma is highlighted owing to the hyperdensity of the foreign body that, at the computed tomographic (CT) axial scan, simulated a vestibular cortical fracture of the mandibular body and deceived bot…

The facial nerve, also known as the seventh cranial nerve, is critical in controlling the movement of the facial muscles. It is responsible for all facial expressions, such as smiling, frowning, and moving the eyebrows. However, damage to this nerve can occur for a variety of reasons, including maxillofacial surgery, trauma, tumors, and infections. Facial nerve injuries can cause severe functional impairment and can lead to different degrees of facial paralysis, significantly affecting the quality of life of patients. Over the past ten years, significant progress has been made in the field of
