The force of measles infection in East Africa.

Catalytic models were applied to age-specific incidence data from two East African studies in order to study the force of measles infection in relation to age. The results are compared with the pattern observed in England and Wales. In East Africa the force of measles infection appears to be independent of age, probably as a result of sociocultural factors. Current impact of measles in Latin America.

The importance of measles as a public health problem and its impact on mortality in children has been recognized for many years in Latin America. This problem was analyzed in detail in 1961 at the International Conference on Measles Immunization held in Bethesda, Maryland. Atypical measles in adolescents and young adults.

Seven patients, aged 12 to 19 years, had atypical measles. Prodromal symptoms of fever, malaise, myalgia, headache, nausea, and vomiting were commonly followed by coryza, sore throat, conjunctivitis, photophobia, nonproductive cough, and pleuritic pain. The characteristic rash was erythematous, maculopapular, and progressed frequently to vesicular, petechial, or purpuric lesions. While the involvement of measles-like virus with subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) has been shown in many laboratories, the possible mechanisms by which a normal measles infection may lead to the chronic condition are unclear. Acute measles encephalitis of the delayed type.

An acute measles encephalitis with epilepsia partialis continua occurred three months after measles in a previously healthy child with no detectable immunological defect. Levels of measles antibodies in serum and cerebrospinal fluid were high, and tubular inclusions of the type seen in subacute sclerosing panencephalitis were found in nerve cell nuclei. A communicating high-pressure hydrocephalus developed in the later stage of the disease. This case demonstrates that measles encephalitis of the delayed type should systematically be considered in children with acute encephalitis.

Measles antibodies and autoantibodies in autoimmune disorders.

Measles CF antibodies have been examined in the sera of patients with a variety of clinical disorders associated with the production of autoantibodies. Humoral immune response in children with measles.

Twenty-eight Black children with complicated measles were investigated for their capacity to produce antibodies when stimulated with TAB antigen. Their measles antibody titres were also measured. Antibody production to TAB was defective, especially the "H" antibody. Production of measles antibody was sometimes delayed in its appearance but subsequently reached normal levels.

Otolaryngological complications of measles in West Africa.

In Nigeria as in West Africa generally measles is a serious condition with a high morbidity and mortality rate. Complications involve every section of Otolaryngology. Some of these are amenable to treatment by the otolaryngologist alone, while others need the skill of colleagues in other specialties. The irreversible neuro-audiological complications cause greatest concern to physician and parent and will continue to do so until the variety of available therapeutic, preventive and rehabilitative services are increased and improved.
