Eosinophilic pleural effusion as the first presentation of angioimmunoblastic T cell lymphoma.

Eosinophilic pleural effusion (EPE), defined as pleural effusion that contains at least 10% eosinophils among the leukocytes, can be a manif … and parasite associated with EPE was suspected. However, after anti-parasitic agent treatment with mebendazole, the pleural effusion did not improve. Six months later, bilateral neck, axillary and inguinal lymphadenopathy developed, and lymph node biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of angioimmunoblastic T cell lymphoma, with positive CD10 expression. Therefore, …

Hydatid disease of the liver in children.

Between 1986 and 1997, 21 children (ten boys and 11 girls) had surgery for hydatid disease of the liver. Their mean age was 6.5 years (range 3-12). Abdominal distention with a mass was the commonest presenting symptom (71.4%), followed by abdominal pain (38%). Hepatomegaly with a palpable mass was present in 12 (57%). Three children had concomitant pulmonary and brain hydatid disease. The diagnosis was established clinically and by skin testing, serology and imaging techniques. All patients received a pre-operative course of mebendazole (50 mg/kg/day) for between 1 and 8 weeks. At surgery, 11 …

Chromosome-Contiguous Reference Genome for Spirometra to Underpin Future Discovery Research.

Sparganosis is a neglected food- and water-borne zoonotic disease caused by members of the tapeworm genus Spirometra. More than 1600 human cases have been reported in the literature, primarily in Korea and China; however, the clinical significance of sparganosis is likely underestimated. The control of this disease is challenging in endemic regions because of the complexity of its lifecycle and the involvement of many animal host species, and treatment of clinical disease in humans and animals with selected drugs (e.g., mebendazole and/or praziquantel), even at elevated doses, is often ineffec…

Who Let the Dogs Out? Unmasking the Neglected: A Semi-Systematic Review on the Enduring Impact of Toxocariasis, a Prevalent Zoonotic Infection.

Toxocariasis remains an important neglected parasitic infection representing one of the most common zoonotic infections caused by the parasi … s, and cerebral toxocariasis or neurotoxocariasis. Anthelmintic agents, for example, albendazole or mebendazole, are the recommended treatment, whereas a combination with topical or systemic corticosteroids for specific forms is suggested. Prevention strategies include educational programs, behavioral and hygienic changes, enhancement of the role of veterinar …

Activity of benzimidazoles against Dientamoeba fragilis (Trichomonadida, Monocercomonadidae) in vitro and correlation of beta-tubulin sequences as an indicator of resistance.

The majority of patients with dientamoebiasis present … four D. fragilis clinical isolates against the following benzimidazoles: albendazole, flubendazole, mebendazole, nocodazole, triclabendazole and thiabendazole. The activities of the antiprotozoal compounds at concentrations ranging from 2 μg/mL to 500 μg/mL were determined via cell counts of D. fragilis grown in xenic culture. All tested drugs showed no effic …

OBJE … disease were operated on several times for multiple recurrences. Combined chemotherapy with either mebendazole or albendazole was also given. The mean age was 52 years, and the mean follow-up time was 92 months. RESULTS: Surgery and chemotherapy improved the symptoms in all cases but could not prevent recurrences and multiple operations. CONCLUSIONS: Prima …

Single or multiple hydatid cysts of the liver are frequently observed in Italy and the Mediterranean countries. USP5 Binds and Stabilizes EphA2 to Increase Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma Radioresistance.

Radioresistance poses a major challenge in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) treatment. However, the underlying mechanism of NPC radioresistance remains poorly understood, and the promising radiosensitizer for NPC radiotherapy is also lacked. Overexpression of USP5 and EphA2 has been linked to various cancers, and both the proteins have attracted considerable attention for the development of new anti-cancer drugs. Here, we report that USP5 interacts with EphA2, and increases EphA2 protein stability and expression by ubiquitin proteasome pathway in the NPC cells. Mebendazole (MBZ), a broad-spectru…

Current therapeutic alternatives for the treatment of cryptococcosis are scarce, highly toxic, expensive, and difficult to access. Therefore … c analyses at subinhibitory concentrations. Antiparasitics albendazole, fenbendazole, flubendazole, mebendazole, and antidepressants duloxetine and paroxetine showed antifungal activity with an MIC of 100 µmol l-1 or less for most strains tested. The results of the zero-interaction power model indicated additive effects for combination of fluconazole with dru …

Multiple pelvic and thigh hydatid cyst: a case report.

Bone cystic echinococcosis is rare disease and its management remain difficult to treat due to frequent recurrences, related to certain locations such as proximal femur and ilium, where radical surgery is difficult to achieve. Medical therapy using Mebendazol can be an ultimate way to insure stabilization and remission of the parasitosis. We present a case of a 37-year-old male who had complaints of pain in left hip and limp four years after surgical management of pertrochanteric fracture of his right lower limb. The first clinical and radiological diagnosis was osteoarthritis of proximal femu

Subcutaneous infection model facilitates treatment assessment of secondary Alveolar echinococcosis in mice.

Alveolar echinococcosis (AE) in humans is a parasitic disease characterized by severe damage to the liver and occasionally other organs. AE is caused by infection with the metacestode (larval) stage of the fox tapeworm Echinococcus multilocularis, usually infecting small rodents as natural intermediate hosts. Conventionally, human AE is chemotherapeutically treated with mebendazole or albendazole. There is, however still the need for improved chemotherapeutical options. Primary in vivo studies on drugs of interest are commonly performed in small laboratory animals such as mice and Mongolian ji…

Effect of repeated targeted mass treatment with praziquantel on the prevalence, intensity of infection and morbidity due to Schistosoma intercalatum in an urban community in equatorial Guinea.

A longitudinal community-based study was carried out in order to evaluate the impact of repeated selective population chemotherapy with praziquantel on the epidemiology of an urban focus of Schistosoma intercalatum in the city of Bata, capital of the Continental Region of Equatorial Guinea. Three surveys were undertaken in January of 1988, 1989 and 1990, determining parasitological prevalence, intensity of infection and morbidity and applying repeated targeted mass treatment. One dose of praziquantel (40 mg/kg body weight) was given one week after treatment with mebendazole (100 mg every 12 ho…

Modeling the effect of different drugs and treatment regimen for hookworm on cure and egg reduction rates taking into account diagnostic error.

BACKGROUND: Hookworm infections, caused by Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus, are of considerable public health importance. The W … t resulted in considerably lower CRs than previously reported. Overall, of all treatments analyzed, mebendazole administered in six dosages of 100 mg each was the most efficacious treatment with a CR of 88% (95% Bayesian credible interval: 79-95%). Furthermore, diagnostic sensitivity varied with the infection intensity and sampling effort. For an infection in …
