Meckel's diverticulum is the most common congenital abnormality of the gastrointestinal tract. It is a true diverticulum containing all layers of the intestinal wall and identified as a saccular, blind-ending structure located on the antimesenteric border of the distal ileum. Most patients remain asymptomatic during their lifetime. Symptomatic cases are nonspecific and can present as small-bowel obstruction, diverticulitis, perforation, gastrointestinal bleeding, and rarely, a neoplasm. Therefore, the radiological diagnosis is of paramount important for proper patient management.

A 28-year-old Chinese man presented with acute bleeding per rectum. Computed tomography showed a posterior outpouching arising from the distal ileum. The outpouching had hyperaemic walls, but no active contrast extravasation was detected. Technetium-99m pertechnetate scintigraphy showed focal areas of abnormal uptake in the right side of the pelvis, superior and posterior to the urinary bladder. These areas of uptake appeared simultaneously with the gastric uptake and demonstrated gradual increase in intensity on subsequent images. The diagnosis of Meckel's diverticulum was confirmed on surger

Meckel's diverticula are the most common congenital malformation of the small intestine. The condition is rarely symptomatic and is usually an incidental finding during surgery. Bleeding in children and obstruction in adults are the most common symptomatic presentations. Our case involves a 50-year-old man with multiple pyogenic liver abscesses due to a Meckel's diverticulum. The abscesses were percutaneously drained and the diverticulum was eventually resected. Pyogenic liver abscess is a very rare presentation of a Meckel's diverticulum. The diverticulum in our case appeared to have a thicke

Meckel's diverticulum is a remnant of the omphalomesenteric duct and is the most common congenital anomalies of the gastrointestinal tract. It has been known to mimic different disease states making its diagnosis difficult. Common complications consist of bleeding, intestinal obstruction and inflammation. The patient discussed in this case study was a 29-year-old Hispanic female who presented with right lower quadrant abdominal pain. A CT scan showed a normal appendix, thickened terminal ileum and a high-grade distal small bowel obstruction with a possible closed-loop obstruction. Laparoscopy

The Meckel's diverticulum is the commonest congenital anomaly of the gastrointestinal tract, often presenting with complications such as gastrointestinal bleeding, intussusception, bowel obstruction and diverticulitis, which are often misdiagnosed. Imaging plays an important role in the early diagnosis and characterization of these conditions and is very helpful in decision making. The Meckel's diverticulum and its complications have myriad presentations and appearances on various imaging modalities. Thus, sound knowledge of the anatomy, embryology, clinical presentation, imaging characteristi

Objectives. The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical features of Meckel's diverticula at different ages, genders, and pathology in order to serve as a reminder to clinicians when evaluating potential cases and to help obtain an early diagnosis. Methods. We collected information of patients with Meckel's diverticulum diagnosed at Mackay Memorial Hospital in Taiwan from 1984 to 2009. After performing a thorough review of their charts, the clinical features of the Meckel's diverticula were analyzed according to age groups, gender, and pathology. Result. A total of 126 patients, w

Intestinal obstruction is a common complication associated with Meckel's diverticulum in adults. The diverticulum itself or its fibrous band can lead to an intestinal volvulus, intussusceptions, or closed-loop obstructions, which require surgery. The incarceration of Meckel's diverticulum in either inguinal or femoral hernia sacs (Littre's hernia) is another, less common, etiology underlying intestinal obstruction. This case report describes a 45-year-old man who had an obstruction associated with a Meckel's diverticulum that passed through a congenital defect in the mesocolon into the right s

Meckel's diverticulum (MD) represents one of the most common malformations of the digestive tract, being a vestige of the proximal end of omphalo-mesenteric duct, which normally obliterates and atrophiates between the sixth and ninth week of intrauterine life. It is estimated that 2-4% of people are carriers of this malformation. The interest in this organ study lies in the fact that it presents its own non-specific pathology, mimicking a cecal, colon or small intestine pathology. It seems that most MD cases are asymptomatic (AS MD), being arbitrary discovered during surgeries, whereas only a

Meckel's diverticulum is the most common congenital abnormality of the gastrointestinal tract. It is usually asymptomatic but may present with complications of acute diverticular inflammation, ulceration, hemorrhage, small bowel obstruction, perforation, retained foreign bodies, enterolith formation, and neoplasm development. Thus, the preoperative radiological diagnosis is crucial for proper management of the patients. This article reviews the anatomic and clinical features of Meckel's and describes the role of imaging in the detection of Meckel's and evaluation of its associated pathological

Meckel's diverticulum is a rare detected anomaly. We present the case of a 13 months old male toddler dead shortly after he was admitted to the hospital. On internal autopsy examination abdominal dissection cream-brown fluid in abdomen was observed. In the ileum, 45 cm proximal to the ileocecal valve, 1 cm in diameter perforation area was detected, ongoing dissection revealed diverticular, pouch like structure, Meckel's diverticulum. We presented perforated Meckel's diverticulum detected at autopsy.

Although Meckel's diverticulum is the most common congenital gastrointestinal disorder, it is controversial whether asymptomatic diverticula in adults should be respected. The authors report the case of a patient who was operated due to ileus caused by adhesions and a Meckel's diverticulum without any sign of inflammation was accidentally noted and removed. As a surprise, the pathological examination of the diverticulum proved carcinoid tumor, a neuroendocrine malignant tumor. The case raises the importance of the removal of asymptomatic Meckel's diverticulum.

Meckel's diverticulum is the most common congenital anomaly of the gastrointestinal tract, with an overall incidence of approximately 2.2%. It is generally noted incidentally during laparotomy for management of other abdominal pathology. Complications are infrequent, developing in 4% of individuals with this abnormality, and are usually seen in childhood. Herein, we discuss the case of a 52-year-old Caucasian man presenting with a 1-day history of worsening central and right-sided abdominal pain. Initial evaluation posed a broad differential however, following conservative measures and unremar

We describe the case of a 43-year-old man recently diagnosed with ileal Crohn's disease complicated by a free peritoneal perforation of a Meckel's diverticulum and the presence of enteroliths in the intestinal lumen. The coexistence of Crohńs disease, Meckel's diverticulum and enteroliths has rarely been reported. Meckel's diverticulum can hamper the management of Crohn's disease.

Meckel's diverticulum is the most common congenital anomaly of the small intestine, with an estimated incidence of approximately 1-3% in the general population. Intestinal obstruction is the most common complication in adult patients. Since accurate diagnosis before the operation is difficult, decision for surgery is delayed, and serious problems may be encountered. Here in, we present the diagnosis and management of our patients with intestinal obstruction due to Meckel's diverticulum.

A 79-year-old woman presented with a 4 day history of central abdominal pain and vomiting. Clinical examination revealed a distended abdomen with predominantly right sided tenderness. Following an initial period of supportive treatment pending further imaging, evolving abdominal signs became evident. Based on the suspicion of a perforated hollow viscus, an emergency laparotomy was carried out. Operative findings were of a Meckel's diverticulum with evidence of pressure necrosis and perforation near its apex, which was distended due to a 6 cm faecolith. Resection and primary anastomosis was per
