Penalized estimation of linear transformation models for interval-censored data with time-dependent covariates.

We investigate efficient estimation strategies for partially linear transformation models with time-dependent covariates under interval censoring. The unknown monotone function is approximated using a monotone B-spline basis to enable flexible semiparametric modeling, and we develop a computationally efficient nested hybrid EM algorithm that integrates Newton's method with isotonic regression. To support large-sample inference, we propose a straightforward variance-covariance estimation procedure for the regression parameters and introduce a score test to assess the adequacy of the proportiona

On the role of anxiety in decisions under possiblistic uncertainty.

We focus on situations in which we must decide on what time to take an action. The action is not in question it is the time of action. We call these "time for action decisions," a prototypical example being deciding when to leave on a journey. We point out that during this type of decision process, the decision-maker recognizes two groups of forces acting on him: one that pushes him to act now and other that pushes him act later. We note that the strength of these forces depends on the information available about various uncertainties associated with the situation. It also strongly depends upo

Time series models based on generalized linear models: some further results.

This paper considers the problem of extending the classical moving average models to time series with conditional distributions given by generalized linear models. These models have the advantage of easy construction and estimation. Statistical modelling techniques are also proposed. Some simulation results and an illustrative example are reported to illustrate the methodology. The models will have potential applications in longitudinal data analysis.

DFT-Based QSAR Modelling of Inhibitory Activity of Coumarins and Sulfocoumarins on Carbonic Anhydrase (CA) Isoforms (CA I and CA II).

OBJECTIVE: We present three robust, validated and statistically significant quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) models, which deal with the calculated molecular descriptors and experimental inhibition constant (Ki) of 42 coumarin and sulfocoumarin derivatives measured against CA I and II isoforms. METHODS: The compounds were subjected to DFT calculations in order to obtain quantum chemical molecular descriptors. Multiple linear regression algorithms were applied to construct QSAR models. Separation of the compounds into training and test sets was accomplished using Kennard-Sto

A modular architecture for articulatory synthesis from gestural specification.

This paper proposes a modular architecture for articulatory synthesis from a gestural specification comprising relatively simple models for the vocal tract, the glottis, aero-acoustics, and articulatory control. The vocal tract module combines a midsagittal statistical analysis articulatory model, derived by factor analysis of air-tissue boundaries in real-time magnetic resonance imaging data, with an αβ model for converting midsagittal section to area function specifications. The aero-acoustics and glottis models were based on a software implementation of classic work by Maeda. The articulato

Underestimation of extremes in sea level surge reconstruction.

Statistical models are an alternative to numerical models for reconstructing storm surges at a low computational cost. These models directly link surges to metocean variables, i.e., predictors such as atmospheric pressure, wind and waves. Such reconstructions usually underestimate extreme surges. Here, we explore how to reduce biases on extremes using two methods-multiple linear regressions and neural networks-for surge reconstructions. Models with different configurations are tested at 14 long-term tide gauges in the North-East Atlantic. We found that (1) using the wind stress rather than the

Suicide as an interpersonal phenomenon: Dyadic methodological and statistical considerations in suicide research.

Interpersonal risk and resilience factors are prominent in current conceptual models of suicide. A growing body of empirical evidence links suicidal thoughts and behaviors to a range of interpersonal phenomenon adding further support to the value of this line of inquiry. At present, research on interpersonal phenomenon focuses on assessing individuals' perceptions of interpersonal phenomenon, such as appraisals of burdensomeness, experienced loneliness, and thwarted belongingness. As this line of research continues to develop, we argue that it would be valuable to consider incorporating concep

Evaluating predictive performance and generalizability of traditional and artificial intelligence models in predicting surgical site infections postspinal surgery: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Surgical site infections (SSIs) are a significant complication following spinal surgery. These infections contribute to increased morbidity, prolonged hospital stays, and substantial healthcare costs. Traditional statistical models have been widely used to predict SSI risk, but artificial intelligence (AI) and its machine learning (ML) methods have also been used for SSI prediction. PURPOSE: This systematic review aims to evaluate the predictive accuracy of AI models versus traditional statistical models in assessing SSI risk following spinal surgery. STUDY DESIGN/SETTING

Bayesian nonparametric mixed-effects joint model for longitudinal-competing risks data analysis in presence of multiple data features.

Recently, the joint analysis of longitudinal and survival data has been an active research area. Most joint models focus on survival data with only one type of failure. The research on joint modeling of longitudinal and competing risks survival data is sparse. Even so, many joint models for this type of data assume parametric function forms for both longitudinal and survival sub-models, thus limits their use. Further, the common data features that are usually observed in practice, such as asymmetric distribution and missingness in response, measurement errors in covariate, need to be taken int

Characterizing uncertainty and variability in physiologically based pharmacokinetic models: state of the science and needs for research and implementation.

Physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) models are used in mode-of-action based risk and safety assessments to estimate internal dosimetry in animals and humans. When used in risk assessment, these models can provide a basis for extrapolating between species, doses, and exposure routes or for justifying nondefault values for uncertainty factors. Characterization of uncertainty and variability is increasingly recognized as important for risk assessment; this represents a continuing challenge for both PBPK modelers and users. Current practices show significant progress in specifying determi

Leishmaniasis emergence and climate change.

Spatio-temporal modelling of the distributions of the leishmaniases and their sandfly vectors is reviewed in relation to climate change. Many leishmaniases are rural zoonoses, and so there is a foundation of descriptive ecology and qualitative risk assessment. Dogs are widespread reservoir hosts of veterinary importance. Recent statistical modelling has not always produced novel general conclusions, exemplifying the difficulty of applying models outside the original geographical region. Case studies are given for transmission cycles involving both cutaneous and visceral leishmaniasis in the Ol

Statistical issues in the study of temporal data: daily experiences.

This article reviews statistical issues that arise in temporal data, particularly with respect to daily experience data. Issues related to nonindependence of observations, the nature of data structures, and claims of causality are considered. Through the analysis of data from a single subject, we illustrate concomitant time-series analysis, a general method of examining relationships between two or more series having 50 or more observations. We also discuss detection of and remedies for the problems of trend, cycles, and serial dependency that frequently plague temporal data, and present metho

Review and evaluation of penalised regression methods for risk prediction in low-dimensional data with few events.

Risk prediction models are used to predict a clinical outcome for patients using a set of predictors. We focus on predicting low-dimensional binary outcomes typically arising in epidemiology, health services and public health research where logistic regression is commonly used. When the number of events is small compared with the number of regression coefficients, model overfitting can be a serious problem. An overfitted model tends to demonstrate poor predictive accuracy when applied to new data. We review frequentist and Bayesian shrinkage methods that may alleviate overfitting by shrinking

Directional information flows between brain hemispheres during presleep wake and early sleep stages.

Neuroscientists' efforts to better understand the underlying processes of human consciousness are growing in a variety of multidisciplinary approaches. Relevant within these are the studies aimed at exploring the physiological substratum of the propagation and reduction of cerebral-namely, corticocortical-communication flows. However, the preferential direction of the information flow between brain hemispheres is as yet largely unknown. It is the aim of the present research to study the communication flows between brain hemispheres, their directionality, and their regional variations across wa

Estimation of gait cycle characteristics by trunk accelerometry.

This study reports on the novel use of a portable system to measure gait cycle parameters. Measurements were made by a triaxial accelerometer over the lower trunk during timed walking over a range of self-administered speeds. Signals from each trial were transformed to a horizontal-vertical coordinate system and analyzed by an unbiased autocorrelation procedure to obtain cadence, step length, and measures of gait regularity and symmetry. By curvilinear interpolation, speed-dependent gait parameters could be compared at a normalized speed. It was demonstrated that analysis of gait cycle paramet

Meta-analysis in Stata using gllamm.

There are several user-written programs for performing meta-analysis in Stata (Stata Statistical Software: College Station, TX: Stata Corp LP). These include metan, metareg, mvmeta, and glst. However, there are several cases for which these programs do not suffice. For instance, there is no software for performing univariate meta-analysis with correlated estimates, for multilevel or hierarchical meta-analysis, or for meta-analysis of longitudinal data. In this work, we show with practical applications that many disparate models, including but not limited to the ones mentioned earlier, can be f
