Transportation-induced nausea-like behavior in goats and the effects of anti-motion sickness medication.

This study investigated the nausea-like behavior induced by road transportation in goats, and the effects of an anti-motion sickness (MS) medication on this behavior. In the first experiment, 11 adult Shiba goats were road transported twice with either a saline (control) or a commercial anti-MS medication (Travelmin) injection at the first or second transportation. Almost all goats showed nausea-like behavior, which was defined as pointing their heads downward, closing their eyes, and staying relatively still. These goats did not respond when they were touched during blood collection. The anti…

Visual vertigo and motion sickness is different between persistent postural-perceptual dizziness and vestibular migraine.

INTRODUCTION: Persistent postural-perceptual dizziness (PPPD) and vestibular migraine (VM) share symptoms of visual vertigo and motion sickness that can be confusing for clinicians to distinguish. We compare the severity of these symptoms and dynamic subjective visual vertical (dSVV) in these two common vestibular conditions. METHOD: Twenty-nine patients with PPPD, 37 with VM, and 29 controls were surveyed for subjective symptoms using the visual vertigo analogue scale (VVAS) and motion sickness susceptibility questionnaire during childhood (MSA) and the past 10 years (MSB). dSVV is a measure…

Effect of Standardized Yelling on Subjective Perception and Autonomic Nervous System Activity in Motion Sickness.

This study investigated the effects of yelling intervention on symptoms and autonomic responses in motion sickness. Forty-two healthy participants were recruited, and they participated in Coriolis stimulation, a technique for inducing motion sickness. The experimental procedure comprised five 1-min rotating stimuli with 1-min rest after each stimulus. Then, the symptom severity was assessed using the Motion Sickness Symptom Rating (MSSR). The d2 Test of Attention scores and cardiovascular responses were recorded before and after Coriolis stimulation. The electrocardiogram results were document…

Low level of swiprosin-1/EFhd2 in vestibular nuclei of spontaneously hypersensitive motion sickness mice.

Susceptibility to motion sickness (MS) varies considerably among humans. However, the cause of such variation is unclear. Here, we used a classical genetic approach to obtain mouse strains highly sensitive and resistant to MS (SMS and RMS). Proteomics analysis revealed substantially lower swiprosin-1 expression in SMS mouse brains. Inducing MS via rotary stimulation decreased swiprosin-1 in the mouse brains. Swiprosin-1 knockout mice were much more sensitive to motion disturbance. Immunohistochemistry revealed strong swiprosin-1 expression in the vestibular nuclei (VN). Over-expressing swipros…

Virtual reality body motion induced navigational controllers and their effects on simulator sickness and pathfinding.

Virtual reality (VR) navigation is usually constrained by plausible simulator sickness (SS) and intuitive user interaction. The paper reports on the use of four different degrees of body motion induced navigational VR controllers, a TiltChair, omni-directional treadmill, a manual wheelchair joystick (VRNChair), and a joystick in relation to a participant's SS occurrence and a controller's intuitive utilization. Twenty young adult participants utilized all controllers to navigate through the same VR task environment in separate sessions. Throughout the sessions, SS occurrence was measured from

Effects of decades of physical driving on body movement and motion sickness during virtual driving.

We investigated relations between experience driving physical automobiles and motion sickness during the driving of virtual automobiles. Middle-aged individuals drove a virtual automobile in a driving video game. Drivers were individuals who had possessed a driver's license for approximately 30 years, and who drove regularly, while non-drivers were individuals who had never held a driver's license, or who had not driven for more than 15 years. During virtual driving, we monitored movement of the head and torso. During virtual driving, drivers became motion sick more rapidly than non-drivers, b…

Effects of N-methyl-D-aspartate antagonists on different measures of motion sickness in cats.

Because N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) antagonists prevent cisplatin-induced emesis and NMDA receptors are in both emetic pathways and structures associated with the final common pathway for vomiting, they have the potential to be broad-spectrum antiemetics. This was evaluated by determining their effects on motion sickness in cats. The measures included the number vomiting, the number of symptom points, which reflect activity early in the final common path and the duration of the retch/vomit sequence, which reflects activity late in the path. Dextrorphan, ketamine and dextromethorphan decreased …

Motion sickness and development of synergy within the spatial orientation system. A hypothetical unifying concept.

Adaptation to research paradigms such as rotating rooms and optical alteration of visual feedback during movement results in development of … apting the spatial orientation system to strange environments. This conceptual model "explains" why motion sickness is associated with adaptation to novel environments and is in general consistent with motion sickness literature.

Effects of spatial frequency of a vertically striped rotating drum on vection-induced motion sickness.

PURPOSE: The present study investigated the effects of differential spatial frequencies of a vertically striped, horizontally rotating drum on the observer's frequency of eye nystagmus, perceived velocity of self-motion, and symptoms of motion sickness. METHODS AND RESULTS: Two experiments were conducted. In Experiment 1, each of 10 subjects viewed 1 min of an optokinetic rotating drum at the speed of 10 rpm covered with 6, 12, 24, 48, and 96 pairs of black and white stripes, presented in counterbalanced order. The results indicated that subjects perceived significantly stronger circular vect…

Unusual vestibular and visual input in human dynamic balance as a motion sickness susceptibility test.

BACKGROUND: Motion sickness (MS) is commonly thought to arise from a sensory conflict. However, few quantitative methods based on this theory are available to detect MS susceptibility. HYPOTHESIS: It was asked whether the standardized unusual stimulation of a single sensory channel under quantified dynamic balance conditions in man could elicit a sensory conflict and therefore trigger motion sickness (MS) METHODS: Vestibular and visual channels were stimulated by galvanic current and rotating prismatic glasses, respectively. The moving platform used to create the requirements for dynamic bala…

Computerized task battery assessment of cognitive and performance effects of acute phenytoin motion sickness therapy.

Phenytoin was previously evaluated as an efficacious anti-motion sickness therapy in more than 24 individuals. To be effective, this short-term, novel therapy requires serum levels in the anticonvulsant range; therefore, it became imperative that the effects of phenytoin upon cognition and performance be quantified. Each subject was tested on a performance battery (Criterion Task Set) on two occasions while on either phenytoin treatment or placebo for subsequent statistical comparison. We evaluated 23 subjects with phenytoin serum levels ranging from 8.9 to 23.9 micrograms/L. While subjects wi…

Transdermal scopolamine: a review of its effects upon motion sickness, psychological performance, and physiological functioning.

Scopolamine is the most effective single drug for the prophylaxis and treatment of motion sickness. However, oral or injected scopolamine displays a comparatively short duration of action (5-6 hours), and leads to deleterious side effects on autonomic and central nervous system cholinergic functions. The transdermal scopolamine system was designed to reduce these problems, but while it does deliver scopolamine over a prolonged time period (72 h), deleterious side effects are also produced. Transdermal scopolamine provides significant motion sickness protection, similar in extent to that provid…

[Reaction to decreased circulating blood volume in persons subject and resistant to motion sickness (airsickness)].

The study of 54 healthy male test subjects demonstrated significantly different responses of motion sickness susceptible and resistant people to 10-minute occlusion of their femoral veins. The changes in limb rheograms, as well as heart rate and stroke volume indicated that in motion sickness susceptible subjects the circulating blood volume in the upper body decreased, whereas in motion sickness resistant subjects it remained unaltered or increased in response to the occlusion.

Heart rate variability as a physiological marker of motion sickness in real-world driving conditions.

This study investigated the utility of heart rate variability (HRV) metrics derived from electrocardiogram (ECG) signals for assessing motion sickness (MS) during real-world driving. While motion sickness is commonly evaluated through subjective reports or multimodal physiological measurements, previous studies have predominantly relied on simulator-based experiments or multimodal physiological sensing, which limit ecological validity and practical deployment in everyday vehicles. In this study, twenty-four female participants were exposed to systematically varied acceleration and deceleration…

German Translation and Validation of the Visually Induced Motion Sickness Susceptibility Questionnaire Short (VIMSSQ-short).

Motion sickness is a condition that is characterized by symptoms like dizziness, nausea, or vomiting, especially during transportation or immersive visual experiences such as gaming and virtual reality (VR). Visually Induced Motion Sickness (VIMS) is of particular concern due to its increasing relevance with the rise of immersive technologies. The 6-item version of the Visually Induced Motion Sickness Susceptibility Questionnaire (VIMSSQ-short), a modified version of the established Motion Sickness Susceptibility Questionnaire, was developed to quickly assess individual susceptibility to VIMS.…

EEG classification model for virtual reality motion sickness based on multi-scale CNN feature correlation.

BACKGROUND: Virtual reality motion sickness (VRMS) is a key issue hindering the development of virtual reality technology, and accurate detection of its occurrence is the first prerequisite for solving the issue. OBJECTIVE: In this paper, a convolutional neural network (CNN) EEG detection model based on multi-scale feature correlation is proposed for detecting VRMS. METHODS: The model uses multi-scale 1D convolutional layers to extract multi-scale temporal features from the multi-lead EEG data, and then calculates the feature correlations of the extracted multi-scale features among all the l…
