Massive Orbital Myiasis Caused by Sarcophaga argyrostoma Complicating Eyelid Malignancy.

Purpose. To report a case of massive orbital myiasis caused by the larvae of Sarcophaga argyrostoma, complicating eyelid malignancy. Observations. A 98-year-old man first presented to our clinic noted to have a fast-growing lesion on his right upper and lower eyelids. Squamous cell carcinoma of the eyelids was highly suspected, and surgical excision was advised, but the patient refused any surgical or nonsurgical intervention. For the next eight months, the patient's family members continued to observe a high rate of tumor growth accompanied by deterioration of the general condition. During th…

Urinary Myiasis Caused by Clogmia albipunctata from the Palestinian Territories.

This is the first record of a case of urinary myiasis in the Palestinian Territories caused by Clogmia albipunctata. Larvae were discharged through urine by a 28-year-old pregnant female whom complained of mild abdominal pain associated with burning sensation while urinating over the past 3 months. Detailed description of the larva was provided.

[Cutaneous myiasis due to Cochliomyia hominivorax associated with seborrheic dermatitis].

Myiasis is an infestation of tissues and organs of humans and animals by Diptera larvae (flies, horseflies, mosquitoes). They are located at different body sites, and classified clinically as cutaneous, visceral and cavitary. We report a 26-year-old woman with a history of seborrheic dermatitis and recent trip to Brazil. She presented with a seven days history of suppurating wounds in the parieto-occipital area of the scalp. At physical examination we found three ulcers of approximately 1.5 cm each, with multiple mobile larvae inside. The obtained larvae were analyzed, identifying Cochliomyia …

Myiasis Associated with Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma--A Literature Review.

Advanced oral squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is a possible risk factor for myiasis, a parasitic infestation of vital tissue of humans or other mammals by dipterous larvae (maggots). Oral myiasis is a rare entity, and is mostly associated with various medical and anatomical conditions, such as neglected mandibular fracture, lip incompetence, cerebral palsy, poor oral hygiene, suppurative lesions, and cancerous wounds. Larvae cause itching and irritation due to their crawling movements and can destroy vital tissues, inducing serious or even life-threating hemorrhage. The aim of the present articl…

Oral gingival myiasis: A rare case report and literature review.

Myiasis is a universal term for extreme infection by the parasitic fly larvae that feed on their host living/dead tissue. Gingival myiasis is a rare disease in the humans associated with poor oral hygiene, suppurative oral lesions, alcoholism, and senility, among other conditions. We present a case of gingival myiasis in the maxillary anterior region on the palatal surface in a 21-year-old mentally challenged male with moderate periodontitis and neurologic deficit. The diagnosis was made on the presence of larvae in the lesion. Treatment done was a manual removal of the larvae, one by one, wit…

Aural myiasis caused by Parasarcophaga (Liosarcophaga) dux (Thomson) in Thailand.

Herein is reported the first case in Thailand of aural myiasis caused by the flesh fly, Parasarcophaga (Liosarcophaga) dux (Thomson). A 5-day-old infant was taken to hospital with a slightly bloody ear. Two fly larvae exiting the ear and another recovered by a physician were alive, and confirmed as P. dux species from adult examination results. This case brought attention to the need for protection against synanthropic flies, particularly for infants and/or hearing impaired patients.

Sebaceous cysts with unpleasant twists: cutaneous myiasis with Dermatobia hominis.

Dermatobia hominis (human Bot fly) causes furuncular myiasis (larval infection) in Central and South America. This report describes a case in a member of the UK Armed Forces who had recently taken part in an overseas training exercise in Belize. The importance of clinical history (including travel history) is highlighted. We also describe the outcomes of conservative treatment and surgical intervention for separate lesions in the same patient.

Cutaneous myiasis due to the Tumbu fly during Operation Keeling.

Cutaneous myiasis is a temporary infestation of the skin with fly larvae (1). The following is a description of a case of cutaneous myiasis caused by the African Tumbu fly (Cordylobia anthropophaga). The clinical presentation and treatment of this infestation is discussed. A review of the Tumbu fly's lifecycle with emphasis on the prevention of the disease in the operational environment is also described.

Myiasis due to Hypoderma lineatum infection mimicking the hypereosinophilic syndrome.

Myiasis is the infestation of live humans with larvae of Diptera (true flies). This report describes a protracted illness caused by infestation with Hypoderma lineatum, resembling the hypereosinophilic syndrome. A 35-year-old man had a 9-month multisystemic illness with pronounced eosinophilia, pleuritis, pericarditis, and myositis. Treatments including glucocorticoids did not alter the disease. Diagnostic studies included computed tomography, 2-dimensional echocardiography, leukocyte count, surgical biopsy of skin and muscle, blood immunoglobulin levels, and blood chemistry. Myiasis was recog…

Furuncular myiasis from Dermatobia hominis infestation. Diagnosis by light microscopy.

Myiasis, the infestation of humans or other vertebrates with fly larvae, may appear as furuncular nodules. Furuncular myiasis occurring in the Western hemisphere, especially in Central and South America, is usually caused by Dermatobia hominis infestation. Travel history, gross examination, and histologic evaluation of the submitted fly larvae will allow the clinician and dermatopathologist to identify the causative organism. We report two cases of furuncular myiasis due to Dermatobia hominis and review the clinical and histopathologic findings pertinent to its diagnosis. In addition, we attem…

Cutaneous myiasis caused by the African tumbu fly (Cordylobia anthropophaga).

We describe a patient with cutaneous myiasis caused by the African tumbu fly (Cordylobia anthropophaga). This case demonstrates the need for a detailed travel history and an understanding of the fly life cycle to prevent erroneous diagnosis and to expedite prompt treatment. The nature of the lesions, larval morphological features, histological characteristics, and immune response directed toward fly maggots are described.

The use of injectable rafoxanide against natural ovine nasal myiasis.

Rafoxanide (Flukanide), 7.5 mg kg-1 b.w. was administered to a group of 17 sheep naturally infected with Oestrus ovis larvae. A similar untreated control group was simultaneously observed for changes in clinical signs and body weights. Three animals from each group were slaughtered and examined for the presence of larval instars of O. ovis. While no larvae were recovered from the treated group, a total of 26 larvae, predominantly first and third instars, were recovered from nasal sinuses of the untreated group. There was clinical recovery and additional weight gain (+3.52 kg) after 2 months in
