Squamous cell carcinoma (SCCA) of the anal canal is an underrecognized malignancy that is growing in annual incidence. Over the years, combined chemoradiation has been the mainstay of treatment for locally advanced SCCA of the anal canal. Currently, the human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccine is recommended to prevent the development of HPV and its associated precancerous lesion(s). Patients diagnosed with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV+) are prone to develop anal cancer due to their high risk of contracting HPV infection. We will focus on the development and management of SCCA of the anal

This article discusses the gross and microscopic pathology of intracranial neoplasms. Primary intracranial neoplasms include tumors of the brain parenchyma; meninges; and rest of mesenchymal, epithelial, and germ cell derivation. The concept of tumor malignancy for primary central nervous system (CNS) neoplasms is somewhat different from that for systemic tumors. Although the capacity to metastasize is a defining feature of systemic malignancies and metastasis to the brain is a relatively common occurrence, primary CNS neoplasms rarely metastasize outside the CNS.

Background: Angiosarcomas are a broad category of vascular origin neoplasms that are poorly characterized in veterinary species. Lymphangiosarcoma (LAS) is an uncommon type of angiosarcoma reported in humans and canines arising from lymphatic endothelium. LAS can be differentiated from other angiosarcomas in dogs based on expression of Prospero-related homeobox gene-1 (PROX-1) or lymphatic vessel endothelial receptor-1 (LYVE-1). Composite hemangioendothelioma (CHE) is a rare angiosarcoma subtype described in people and characterized by a variable biologic behavior and infrequent metastasis. Th

Objective: To study the clinicopathologic features, diagnosis and differential diagnosis of tumors of haematopoietic and lymphoid tissue in the female productive tract. Methods: Eleven cases of myeloid sarcoma and leukemia, 9 of non Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) , 13 of cervical lymphoma-like lesions were selected from Peking University People's Hospital from January 2006 to August 2017. According to WHO classification of tumors of haematopoietic and lymphoid tissues (2008) and updated classification(2016), the cases were studied by microscopy, immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization. Results:

Over recent years, immunotherapy with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) has revolutionized the clinical management of various solid neoplasms, including melanoma and lung carcinoma. A proportion of these malignancies exhibit a baseline immunological configuration that can be successfully targeted with ICIs to support durable clinical responses. Conversely, breast neoplasms other than the triple-negative subset respond poorly to ICIs, reflecting numerous tumour-intrinsic and microenvironmental barriers against effective anticancer immunity. Notably, most hormone receptor-positive breast cance

Histiocytic sarcoma (HS) is a rare, aggressive malignant neoplasm characterized by histiocytic features, frequently presenting in advanced clinical stages and associated with a poor prognosis. Although HS can occur sporadically or secondary to other hematological malignancies, cases with a long latency period have been rarely reported. This case report presents a unique case of secondary HS diagnosed 33 years and seven months after the initial diagnosis of B-cell precursor acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Both neoplasms shared identical immunoglobulin heavy chain and T-cell receptor gene rearrang

Thymic epithelial tumors (TETs) are rare malignant neoplasms arising in the thymus gland. Nevertheless, TETs, including thymomas (TMs), thymic carcinomas (TCs), and thymic neuroendocrine neoplasms (TNENs), are the most common mediastinal malignancies overall. A multidisciplinary approach is required for the appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic management of TETs. To date, the main therapeutic strategies are largely depended on the stage of the tumor and they include surgery with or without neoadjuvant or adjuvant therapy, represented by platinum-based chemotherapy, radiotherapy or chemoradio

Liver diseases, including viral hepatitis, fatty liver, metabolic-associated fatty liver disease, liver cirrhosis, alcoholic liver disease, and liver neoplasms, are major global health challenges. Despite the continued development of new drugs and technologies, the prognosis of end-stage liver diseases, including advanced liver cirrhosis and liver neoplasms, remains poor. Follistatin-like protein 1 (FSTL1), an extracellular glycoprotein, is secreted by various cell types. It is a glycoprotein that belongs to the family of secreted proteins acidic and rich in cysteine (SPARC). It is also known

Genetically driven tissue destruction followed by remodeling in adult polycystic kidney disease (APKD) raises the possibility of malignant transformation. Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) associated with APKD has been frequently reported in the literature; however, only a few cases of nonepithelial neoplasms arising in APKD have been described so far. Histiocytic sarcoma (HS) is a lymphohematopoietic malignant neoplasm that accounts for less than 1% of hematologic malignancies. In this article, we describe a case of primary HS occurring in a 61-year-old man with end-stage renal disease secondary to

High-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) persistent infection is responsible for the development of the majority of cervical cancers. The therapy against HPV-associated cancer requires knowledge of the viral gene expression mechanisms. In this study, the polyadenylated polycistronic transcripts containing full-size E1ORF and produced from the early P14 promoter were detected for the first time in cervical tumors with episomal forms of the HPV16 genome. P14-initiated mRNAs were revealed also in precancerous lesions. The amount of P14-initiated transcripts was significantly less compared to trans

Locally advanced carcinomas are considered for comparison with non-neoplastic entities and other gastric and non-gastric tumor types. How can primary gastric carcinomas be pathologically distinguished from mimics and metastatic carcinomas? And carcinomas of the cardia from Barrett adenocarcinomas? And undifferentiated gastric carcinomas from other undifferentiated neoplasms? To answer these questions, topographic, morphologic and immunohistochemical distinctive features are illustrated. Moreover, a pathological "excursus" on the most frequent neoplasms of the stomach is provided along with epi

The association between myositis and malignancy has long been appreciated. However, several recent reviews question the validity of this connection and the utility of pursuing an extensive search for occult malignancy in myositis. We report 9 patients fulfilling diagnostic criteria for myositis seen in the past 12 years. In each, a neoplasm was uncovered only in the course of a systematic search or, when initial investigation was deferred, at a later time. Of the 9 patients, 6 had dermatomyositis, 3 polymyositis. In 3 cases, solid tumors were diagnosed concomitantly with the myositis. In the r

Fine needle aspiration can serve as the initial diagnostic modality for a wide variety of lesions within the pediatric age group. The utility of the technique depends on the clinical setting and histologic type of tumor under study. FNA is most valuable for staging and conformation of metastatic spread in small round cell malignancies. The use of aspiration cytology as the initial diagnostic procedure for these neoplasms is more controversial since this technique may deprive the clinician of valuable information (histologic subtype, oncogene status) now available only by examination of large t

The carcinoma with simultaneous involvement of the endometrium and the ovary is an uncommon but well recognized event. The determination of clinical stage depends on which of the two sites is considered to be the primary. Combined involvement may occasionally represent independent primary neoplasm. A review of all cases with a tissue diagnosis of endometrioid ovarian carcinoma and concomitant endometrial carcinoma was undertaken to identify those cases which possibly had independent primaries. Three such cases with disease confined to the pelvis were identified on the basis of pathologic featu

Neoplastic and nonneoplastic lesions in untreated (C57BL/6N x C3H/HeN)F1 (B6C3F1) mice used as controls in carcinogenesis tests were tabulated and evaluated. The most common neoplasms in 2,543 male mice were hepatocellular adenomas and carcinomas. In 2,522 female mice, common tumors were lymphomas, leukemias, pulmonary adenomas and carcinomas, hepatocellular adenomas and carcinomas, and pituitary adenomas. The risk of developing most neoplasms increased with the age of the mouse. Hepatocellular carcinomas metastasized in 12% of the animals with these tumors. Other than lymphomas and leukemias,

Gynecologic malignancies represent a major public health challenge in Mexico, remaining among the principal causes of morbidity and mortality in women. Endometrial carcinoma constitutes one of the most frequent neoplasms, with its staging and management requiring a surgical approach in accordance with contemporary international standards. A descriptive report was conducted on the first patient treated with robot-assisted surgery for endometrial cancer at the Oncology Hospital. Preoperative assessment included standard imaging and clinical staging to confirm that the disease was confined to the

The fifth leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women in the United States is ovarian cancer. An estimated 21,980 new cases and 14,270 estimated deaths occurred nationwide in 2014. More than two-thirds of cases of ovarian cancer are diagnosed at stage III or IV when the peritoneal cavity or other organs are affected. Primary appendiceal malignant neoplasms may mimic advanced-stage ovarian cancer and can be misdiagnosed because of its presentation as a palpable adnexal mass. The authors describe a 42-year-old woman who was admitted to the department of obstetrics and gynecology to receiv

The authors describe a 47-year-old woman with intravenous leiomyomatosis (IVL) extending into the right ventricular cavity. This rare entity is a neoplasm originating from smooth muscle of the uterus, with vermiform extensions into the inferior vena cava. The patient underwent a one-stage operation under simultaneous sternotomy and laparotomy, and radical excision of the tumor was successfully achieved with use of normothermic cardiopulmonary bypass. Although this tumor is histologically benign, it sometimes extends into the cardiac cavity and causes sudden death due to incarceration into the

Various trials of ovarian cancer screening programs have been reported worldwide. In 2011, one of the most famous papers indicated that annual screening using CA125/transvaginal sonography (TVS) did not reduce ovarian cancer mortality in the United States of America (USA). To investigate the validity of ovarian cancer screening, we verified the analyses of previous reports. At first, we obtained the USA datasets that were used for the analyses and identified many patients in whom cancers were accidentally detected several years after the screening period. We thus performed a new prognostic com

Fibrillary glomerulonephritis (FGN) is a rare glomerular disease characterized by the deposition of fibrils within the mesangium and glomerular basement membrane. Most cases are idiopathic, but it can be linked to autoimmune diseases, neoplasms, and infections. There is limited evidence on the best treatment approach, and many patients progress to end-stage kidney disease. The authors present a case of FGN in a patient with Sjögren's syndrome (SS) and primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), highlighting a successful clinical outcome.
