Wild polioviruses were isolated a number of times in The Netherlands outside the epidemic periods (1978 and 1992-1993) from patients infected abroad, from subclinically infected persons, and from river water. Sequence comparisons revealed discrete sources of importation: the Mediterranean, India, and Indonesia. Environmental as well as individual socio-demographic and illness characteristics are related to the risk of admission. This paper addresses the problem of the interrelationships of these factors to admission rates. Using the Groningen Psychiatric Case Register, admission rates (during 1986 and 1987) from 34 administrative areas were calculated. In this study the results of a 9-year cervical screening program in the region of Nijmegen, The Netherlands are presented. All women aged 35 through 54 were invited every 3 years for a cervical smear. Overall attendance rates were 74%, 67%, and 63% at first, second, and third screening, respectively.
