Distinct Alpha Connectivity Patterns During Response Inhibition in Alcohol Use Disorder.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a chronic condition characterized by the inability to control drinking despite experiencing harmful consequences. However, the extent to which excessive alcohol consumption alters the dynamics within the inhibitory control network remains unclear. This study investigates the neurophysiological mechanisms of directed connectivity in alpha and theta frequency bands between cortical regions involved in the interplay between automated and controlled processes during inhibitory control in individuals with mild to moderate AUD. The results indicate that individuals with

Cerebello-cortical inhibition underlies the effects of cerebellar magnetic stimulation on spinocerebellar ataxia type 3: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) over the cerebellum has shown therapeutic potential for spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 (SCA3). However, the underlying electrophysiological mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we aimed to utilize single-pulse TMS combined with electroencephalography co-registration (TMS-EEG) to probe cerebellar projections underlying the effects of rTMS in SCA3 patients. METHODS: A group of 38 SCA3 patients and 35 healthy controls underwent baseline TMS-EEG to assess cerebellar projections. Patients were evaluated using the International Cooperative

Abnormalities of neural excitatory-inhibitory balance in the motor cortex associated with chronic smoking in male participants.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic smoking is associated with differences in intracortical circuits within the hand area of the primary motor cortex. However, given that smoking involves fine hand-to-mouth coordination, its potential impact on the excitability of the oral motor cortex remains unexplored. This study compared people who smoke chronically with those who do not, to examine differences in motor cortex excitability. METHODS: Paired-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) was used to quantify intracortical circuit excitability in the hand and oral motor areas. Single-pulse TMS assessed cortic

Reducing Tinnitus via Inhibitory Influence of the Sensorimotor System on Auditory Cortical Activity.

Tinnitus is the subjective perception of a sound without corresponding external acoustic stimuli. Research highlights the influence of the sensorimotor system on tinnitus perception. Associated neuronal processes, however, are insufficiently understood, and it remains unclear how and at which hierarchical level the sensorimotor system interacts with the tinnitus-processing auditory system. We therefore asked 23 patients suffering from chronic tinnitus (11 males) to perform specific exercises, aimed at relaxing or tensing the jaw area, which temporarily modulated tinnitus perception. Associated

Altered functional connectivity between cortical networks associated with inhibitory control in trauma-exposed females.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is associated with impaired inhibitory control and alterations in large-scale brain network connectivity. However, few studies to date have examined the construct of inhibitory control as it relates to resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) in a population with PTSD or trauma-exposure. The present study investigated the relationship between impaired inhibitory control and rsFC within the default mode network (DMN), central executive network (CEN), and salience network (SN) in a sample of females exposed to interpersonal trauma with and without PTSD (

Abnormal motor surround inhibition associated with cortical and deep grey matter involvement in multiple sclerosis.

OBJECTIVE: Motor surround inhibition (mSI) is a physiological mechanism that contributes to hand movement control by focusing voluntary movement. Growing evidence suggests that hand movement control is impaired in multiple sclerosis. The aim of the study was to evaluate mSI in MS and to investigate the brain structures involved in mSI in multiple sclerosis. METHODS: We recruited 33 patients and 23 controls. To investigate mSI, we delivered transcranial magnetic single pulses during index finger flexion. Motor evoked potentials were recorded and first dorsal interosseous ("active muscle") and

Increasing endogenous activity of NMDARs on GABAergic neurons increases inhibition, alters sensory processing and prevents noise-induced tinnitus.

Selective enhancement of GABAergic inhibition is thought to impact many vital brain functions and interferes with the genesis and/or progression of numerous brain disorders. Here, we show that selectively increasing NMDA receptor activity in inhibitory neurons using an NMDAR positive allosteric modulator (PAM) elevates spiking activity of inhibitory neurons in vitro and in vivo. In vivo infusion of PAM increases spontaneous and sound-evoked spiking in inhibitory and decreases spiking in excitatory neurons, and increases signal-to-noise ratio in the primary auditory cortex. In addition, PAM inf

Phantom Perception of Sound and the Abnormal Cortical Inhibition System: An Electroencephalography (EEG) Study.

OBJECTIVES: Despite no observable external sound present, a perceived feeling of a recurrent unpleasant sound is a main complaint in the patients with chronic tinnitus. This phantom perception of sound is considered as the auditory equivalent of phantom limb pain, and altered excitability may be involved in its underlying pathology. Tinnitus-related hyper-excitation is suppressed by inhibitory repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS). However, the neural mechanism underlying the treatment is not fully understood, and quantifying the suppression induced by rTMS has yet to be consider

Adaptation to Leftward Shifting Prisms Alters Motor Interhemispheric Inhibition.

Adaptation to rightward shifting prisms (rightward prism adaptation, RPA) ameliorates neglect symptoms in patients while adaptation to leftward shifting prisms (leftward prism adaptation, LPA) induces neglect-like behaviors in healthy subjects. It has been hypothesized that prism adaptation (PA) modulates interhemispheric balance between the parietal cortices by inhibiting the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) contralateral to the prismatic deviation, but PA's effects on interhemispheric inhibition (IHI) have not been directly investigated. Since there are hyper-excitable connections between the

Different decision deficits impair response inhibition in progressive supranuclear palsy and Parkinson's disease.

Progressive supranuclear palsy and Parkinson's disease have distinct underlying neuropathology, but both diseases affect cognitive function in addition to causing a movement disorder. They impair response inhibition and may lead to impulsivity, which can occur even in the presence of profound akinesia and rigidity. The current study examined the mechanisms of cognitive impairments underlying disinhibition, using horizontal saccadic latencies that obviate the impact of limb slowness on executing response decisions. Nineteen patients with clinically diagnosed progressive supranuclear palsy (Rich

Feedforward somatosensory inhibition is normal in cervical dystonia.

BACKGROUND: Insufficient cortical inhibition is a key pathophysiological finding in dystonia. Subliminal sensory stimuli were reported to transiently inhibit somatosensory processing. Here we investigated whether such subliminal feedforward inhibition is reduced in patients with cervical dystonia. METHODS: Sixteen cervical dystonia patients and 16 matched healthy controls performed a somatosensory detection task. We measured the drop in sensitivity to detect a threshold-level digital nerve shock when it was preceded by a subliminal conditioning shock, compared to when it was not. RESULTS: Su

Dopamine differently modulates central cholinergic circuits in patients with Alzheimer disease and CADASIL.

Short-latency afferent inhibition (SAI) technique gives the opportunity to non-invasively test an inhibitory circuit in the human cerebral motor cortex that depends mainly on central cholinergic activity. Important SAI abnormalities have been reported in both patients with Alzheimer disease (AD) and cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy (CADASIL), a model of "pure" vascular dementia (VD). Interestingly, a normalization of SAI was observed in AD after levo-dopa (L-dopa) administration. We aimed to determine whether the pharmacological manipul

Impulse inhibition in people with Internet addiction disorder: electrophysiological evidence from a Go/NoGo study.

We investigated response inhibition in people with Internet addiction disorder (IAD) by recording event-related brain potentials during a Go/NoGo task. Twelve IAD-afflicted and 12 normal university students participated in the study. Results show that the IAD group exhibited lower NoGo-N2 amplitude, higher NoGo-P3 amplitude, and longer NoGo-P3 peak latency than the normal group. The results also suggest that the IAD students had lower activation in the conflict detection stage than the normal group; thus, they had to engage in more cognitive endeavors to complete the inhibition task in the lat

The cooperative phenomenon of autonomic nervous system in urine storage for Wistar rats.

The fractal dimension (FD) and spectral frequencies of physiological signals are two important indices in the study of physiological functions and dynamical diseases. The first index can be used to characterize the intensity and the second the rhythms of signals embedded in seemingly random data. Recent studies using both indices verified that synergic co-activations of bladder and external urethral sphincter (EUS) of Wistar rats were present during the voiding of urine. In this study, the primary aims were to (1) examine if the involved muscles in the lower urinary tract would be under simila

Brain correlates of negative visuospatial priming in healthy children.

Inhibitory mechanisms that begin to develop in childhood are essential for efficient and goal-directed behaviors. These inhibitory mechanisms may go awry in several childhood-onset neuropsychiatric disorders, such as Tourette syndrome, obsessive-compulsive disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Negative visuospatial priming is a well-established behavioral probe of inhibition that has been used to demonstrate deficits in children with neuropsychiatric disorders of inhibition, but the brain correlates of negative visuospatial priming have not previously been well delineated. Selective effect of repetitive hand movements on intracortical excitability.

Repetitive training of isolated movements induces local reorganization of the motor cortex. To investigate the effect of repetitive movements on intracortical inhibition and facilitation shortly after the movements, we performed paired-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation in 12 healthy subjects by using interstimulus intervals of 2 and 8 ms, respectively. Motor evoked potentials (MEPs) were recorded simultaneously from the extensor carpi radialis (ECR) and the flexor carpi ulnaris muscle (FCU) following paired stimuli at rest or 1 s after repetitive (every 6 s) active or passive wrist exten

Mechanisms associated with unusual orofacial pain.

This article presents an overview of possible mechanisms associated with pain perception, with a specific focus on understanding unusual manifestations of orofacial pain associated with nerve insult. It includes recent evidence concerning neurobiological changes that occur in the periphery at tissue and nerve sites, or within the central nervous system, and that may involve chemical and inflammatory responses, sensitization, or alterations of cellular function. Moreover, the contribution of the autonomic nervous system, changes in emotional reactivity and vigilance, the roles of high brain cen

Reciprocal Ia inhibition in patients with asymmetric spinal spasticity.

OBJECTIVES: Previous studies on reciprocal Ia inhibition in spinal spasticity were contradictory, probably due to differences in the etiology, severity, and the course of recovery from the disease. The purpose of the present study was to establish a correlation between Ia inhibition and clinical abnormalities in spasticity following a spinal cord injury (SCI). METHODS: We studied reciprocal Ia inhibition in bilateral soleus muscles in five SCI patients with marked asymmetry of spasticity and functional recovery for the right and left legs. Reciprocal Ia inhibition was determined from the shor

Preparation and motor potentials in chronic tic and Tourette syndromes.

Many studies have found that people with tic disorder show more difficulty when inhibiting an automated than a controlled response. Furthermore, although normal motor threshold and excitability are present, but reduced or impaired, motor inhibition seems manifest in patients with tic. In order to localize this inhibition impairment in tic disorder the present study examine two response-locked ERPs: the Bereitschaft (preparation BP) and the motor potentials (MP). The simple tic group showed faster BP latency and smaller amplitude than control and complex tic group and did not show a correspondi

Tactile prepuff inhibition of startle in children with Tourette's syndrome: in search of an "fMRI-friendly" startle paradigm.

BACKGROUND: Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies in neuropsychiatric populations will be enhanced by "on-line" tasks that assess brain activation linked to neurocognitive and psychophysiological functions. In some cases, task modifications may be required for use in an fMRI environment. Prepulse inhibition (PPI) of the startle reflex is an operational measure of sensorimotor gating that is deficient in specific neuropsychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia, Huntington's disease, and Tourette's syndrome (TS). This study examined whether a modified "fMRI-friendly" PPI parad
