Caregiving strategies for young infants born to women with a history of substance abuse and other risk factors.

Social risks such as exposure to family violence, drug or alcohol abuse, poverty, adolescent parenting, or a history of abuse and neglect can limit parenting ability because individuals may lack the physical, personal, or emotional resources to provide an environment that facilitates the optimal development of infants. Community health, home care, and other nurses can provide needed support and information to parents of young infants from families with multiple risk factors. Caregiving strategies to demonstrate to mothers of young infants are described.

'Difficult' Patients: Disciplinary Power and Nursing Practice in Forensic Hospital Settings.

Nurses practicing in forensic mental health hospital settings work with patients involved in the criminal justice system who are also diagnosed with psychiatric illnesses. Nurses work towards collaborative and therapeutic relationships with patients with an eventual goal of recovery and successful discharge to the community. Though the majority of patients in these settings in Canada are diagnosed with psychotic disorders, a smaller proportion may be diagnosed with antisocial personality disorder (ASPD), a patient population often described as 'difficult' or even 'untreatable' by nurses. An overwhelming number of justice-involved individuals arrive in correctional settings with many complex physical and mental health conditions. Consequently, health care interventions are needed to stabilize and prevent further deterioration of these conditions. Voices on Fire: Narratives on Nurse Activism Amid Power Dynamics in the Philippines.

This study explored the narratives of 10 Filipino nurse activists who transformed experiences of suffering, exploitation, and professional marginalization into organized resistance and advocacy. In the Philippine context, nurses continue to face poor working conditions, inadequate compensation, migration pressures, and political threats such as red-tagging, yet little is known about how they navigate the shift from endurance to activism. Guided by narrative inquiry and informed by Foucauldian archeology and genealogy, the study examined interviews alongside position statements and news article

Beyond ad hoc home blood pressure monitoring: The need for standardisation and integration into primary care.

Hypertension guidelines recommend home blood pressure monitoring (HBPM) using a standardised protocol to ensure accuracy and guide effective management. However, the extent to which HBPM is performed according to standardised protocol is unclear. The study aimed to explore how HBPM is used and understood by both health professionals and community members. A targeted, qualitative content analysis was conducted using a hybrid approach that combined deductive and inductive strategies to identify themes related to HBPM. Data was collected across 17 consultations and 19 co-design workshops with com

Active debridement of venous leg ulcers: a literature review to inform clinical practice.

Community nurses often care for patients with sloughy venous leg ulcers. Slough is viewed as a potential infection source and an impediment to healing, but it is unclear if active debridement of slough promotes healing. Using a clinical scenario as a contextual basis, this literature review sought research evidence to answer this clinical question. A strategy based on the '4S' approach was used to identify research evidence. The retrieved evidence included one systematic review, three clinical guidelines and six qualitative and quantitative studies. The analysis suggested that there is no robu

Some lousy questions for home health nurses.

Pediculosis continues to be a widespread problem for both the public and health care professionals, including home health nurses. Dealing with this problem is complicated by a number of factors, including questions concerning the efficacy and safety of the medications used and the level of knowledge of about this condition. Because pediculosis often is considered more as an embarrassing annoyance than a serious threat, it has a relatively low priority on the list of contemporary health care concerns. This article addresses several practical questions concerning the character and treatment of p

Training perinatal nurses in palliative communication by using scenario-based simulation: A quasi-experimental study.

AIM: This study aimed to assess the impact of two educational modules on enhancing the communication confidence, competence and performance of perinatal nurses in the context of palliative care. BACKGROUND: Concerns have arisen regarding the preparedness of perinatal nurses in delivering palliative care, especially in terms of deficiencies in communication skills and negative attitudes toward making life-support decisions for parents facing neonates with terminal conditions. Bridging this gap necessitates improved perinatal palliative care education for healthcare providers. Research has show

Waiting for speech therapy: a group to help the under-3s.

It can take up to two years for a child with speech problems to be seen by a speech therapist. The waiting period can be stressful for parents and frustrating for the child, who may begin to show behaviour problems. Group sessions for up to 10 children with speech problems aged 2-3 years and their parents produced positive benefits during the waiting period. The groups were set up and managed by a health visitor with input from a speech and language therapist and outside speakers. The parents learnt how children's communication skills develop and were shown simple techniques for helping their
