The efficacy of an interdisciplinary pain management program for complex regional pain syndrome compared to low back pain and chronic widespread pain: an observational study.

BACKGROUND: Little research has assessed the efficacy of interdisciplinary pain management programs (IPMPs) for complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), whereas evidence shows that IPMPs are effective for low back pain (LBP) and chronic widespread pain (CWP). This study aimed to determine whether outcomes following an IPMP differ for people with CRPS compared to LBP and CWP. In addition, we determined whether it is possible to predict IPMP outcomes using baseline characteristics. METHODS: People with CRPS (N = 66) who had completed a 3-week IPMP were compared with age- and gender- matched contr…

A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of the Efficacy of Kinesio Taping for Pain Management and Pressure Pain Threshold in Myofascial Pain Syndrome.

Myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) is a prevalent musculoskeletal disorder characterized by myofascial trigger points (MTrPs), which can significantly impact an individual's quality of life. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of Kinesio taping (KT) in reducing pain intensity and increasing pressure pain threshold (PPT) in individuals with MPS. A comprehensive search was performed across five electronic databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Embase, and SCOPUS) from inception to May 2024. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing KT to a control group, including no interven

Painful considerations in exercise-management for rotator cuff related shoulder pain: a scoping review on pain-related prescription parameters.

BACKGROUND: Resistance exercise is recommended as the first line of treatment for rotator cuff related shoulder pain (RCRSP), but with conflicting evidence supporting the superiority of specific prescription parameters. Particularly, the role of pain-related prescription parameters remains poorly understood, despite their wide clinical application and potential impact on treatment outcomes. This review aims to investigate how pain-related prescription parameters, such as pain allowance and intensity limits, are reported, described, and applied in clinical trials assessing resistance exercise i

Pain management strategies and their associations with quality of life and pain interference in women with chronic pelvic pain: A cross-sectional survey.

BackgroundChronic pelvic pain (CPP) affects an estimated 6-27% of women and is associated with substantial impairment in quality of life (QoL). Common conditions include endometriosis, vulvodynia, and interstitial cystitis. Management typically involves multiple biomedical and psychological strategies, often used in combination, yet their independent associations with QoL and pain interference remain unclear.ObjectivesTo examine associations between six pain management strategies (surgery, hormonal medication, non-hormonal medications/therapies, analgesia, alternative therapies, and psychologi…

Recent advances in acute pain management: understanding the mechanisms of acute pain, the prescription of opioids, and the role of multimodal pain therapy.

In this review, we discuss advances in acute pain management, including the recent report of the joint American Pain Society and American Academy of Pain Medicine task force on the classification of acute pain, the role of psychosocial factors, multimodal pain management, new non-opioid therapy, and the effect of the "opioid epidemic". In this regard, we propose that a fundamental principle in acute pain management is identifying patients who are most at risk and providing an "opioid free anesthesia and postoperative analgesia". This can be achieved by using a multimodal approach that includes…

Management of intractable pain with percutaneous epidural spinal cord stimulation: differences in pain-relieving effects among diseases and sites of pain.

This study is a survey of the overall clinical results achieved with our pain treatment method, percutaneous epidural low-frequency (1.6-8.0 Hz) spinal cord stimulation. It examines the relationship between the effectiveness of epidural spinal cord stimulation (ESCS) and diseases or sites of pain. Continuous indwelling of the catheter electrodes in the posterior epidural space ranged from 3 to 67 days, and the duration of percutaneous ESCS varied from less than 1 wk to more than 1 yr. Complete pain relief (100%) was achieved during stimulation in 11.5% of the patients (52 of 454). Complete (10

Early Ultrasound-Guided Nerve Blocks for Sickle Cell Pain Crisis: A Novel Approach to Pain Management.

BACKGROUND: Pain management in patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) can be challenging for emergency physicians (EPs). Current emergency department (ED) recommendations for pain management in patients with SCD include rapid triage and pain control with intravenous opioids, followed by other adjunctive modes of analgesia. Regional anesthesia is recommended as a possible adjunct treatment option, but is generally performed later in the hospital course rather than in the ED. CASE REPORT: A 29-year-old man with SCD presented to the ED in a vaso-occlusive crisis in the setting of right worse th…

Does Interventional Pain Management Play a Role in the Treatment of Cervical Post-Surgical Neuropathic Pain?

Post-surgical neuropathic pain is still an underdiagnosed medical condition with persistent pain occurring in 10-50% of patients submitted to surgery. We present a case of a 52-year-old patient with persistent paracervical, supraclavicular, and upper chest neuropathic pain after the excision of a massive deep right cervical tumor, concluded to be an accessory spinal nerve schwannoma. A thorough physical and ultrasound examination helped conclude injury of the superficial cervical plexus. Therefore, an ultrasound-guided hydrodissection of several neuromas was performed at the level of the super

Improving postoperative pain management in children by providing regular training and an updated pain therapy concept.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, children's hospitals have increasingly implemented postoperative pain management protocols to reduce postoperative pain and improve patient satisfaction. The effectiveness and long-term sustainability of such protocols have rarely been studied. Therefore, we conducted a prospective intervention study to assess the impact of regular training and improvement of clinical processes on the quality of postoperative pain management. METHODS: We conducted an initial assessment of the status quo of postoperative pain management (Audit 1) followed by repeated training and i…

Pancreatic Cancer-Associated Pain Management Beyond Opioids: Integrating Oncological Treatment, Palliative Care, and Interventional Pain Medicine.

Pain is one of the most frequent and burdensome symptoms of pancreatic cancer and may substantially impair quality of life throughout the disease trajectory. Its complex and evolving etiology, involving visceral, neuropathic, somatic, and treatment-related mechanisms, frequently makes adequate pain control challenging. This critical narrative review provides a multidisciplinary overview of pancreatic cancer-associated pain management, integrating oncological treatment, palliative and pharmacological care, and interventional pain management into a practical clinical framework. Anticancer therap…

Breaking the pain barrier: implantable intrathecal pump therapy as a game-changer in cancer pain management.

BACKGROUND: Chronic cancer pain, especially in advanced stages, remains a significant clinical challenge, often necessitating complex multimodal strategies. Although systemic opioids are standard therapy, many patients experience inadequate relief or adverse effects. Implantable intrathecal drug delivery systems (IDDS) have emerged as a promising alternative, enabling targeted analgesia with reduced opioid burden and improved quality of life. This narrative review summarizes current evidence on the clinical application, efficacy, safety, and cost-effectiveness of IDDS in cancer pain management…

Stimulant use for self-management of pain among safety-net patients with chronic non-cancer pain.

BACKGROUND: Chronic pain affects one-fifth of US adults. Reductions in opioid prescribing have been associated with increased non-prescription opioid use and, chronologically, increased stimulant (methamphetamine and cocaine) use. While non-prescription opioid use is commonly attributed to pain self-management, the role of stimulants in managing pain is unclear. METHODS: We analyzed baseline data from a longitudinal study of patients with chronic non-cancer pain in an urban safety-net healthcare system who had been prescribed an opioid for ≥3 of the last 12 months, and had a history of non-pr
