Shaping parents, shaping penises: How medical teams frame parents' decisions in response to hypospadias.

INTRODUCTION: Psychological research provides insights into how parents approach medical decisions on behalf of children. The medical decision of concern here is the surgical alteration of a hypospadic penis, whose urethral opening does not appear at the tip. Hypospadias surgery is routinely carried out in infancy, despite criticism by international organizations concerned about children's rights. The focus of this study is on the framing of hypospadias surgery. OBJECTIVES: The objective was to examine how health professionals frame hypospadias and hypospadias surgery in medical and non-medic

Parents and nurses balancing parent-infant closeness and separation: a qualitative study of NICU nurses' perceptions.

BACKGROUND: When a newborn requires neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) hospitalization, parent and infant experience an unusual often prolonged separation. This critical care environment poses challenges to parent-infant closeness. Parents desire physical contact and holding and touching are particularly important. Evidence shows that visitation, holding, talking, and skin to skin contact are associated with better outcomes for infants and parents during hospitalization and beyond. Thus, it would be important to understand closeness in this context. The purpose of this study was to explore fr

Intimate partner violence, power, and equity among adolescent parents: relation to child outcomes and parenting.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) victimization and perpetration and power imbalances in parenting partners may result in poor outcomes for parents and children. Previous work in this area has focused on the maternal experiences, neglecting to examine paternal effects. The present study aimed to elucidate the role of IPV, power, and equity in parenting and child outcomes in an urban sample of adolescent parents. 159 male and 182 female parents in a relationship were recruited through university-affiliated hospitals. Power, equity, and IPV were measured at 6 months post-partum and were used as pr…

Angry responses to infant challenges: parent, marital, and child genetic factors associated with harsh parenting.

This study examined genetic and environmental influences on harsh parenting of adopted 9-month-olds (N = 503), with an emphasis on positive child-, parent-, and family-level characteristics. Evocative gene-environment correlation (rGE) was examined by testing the effect of both positive and negative indices of birth parent temperament on adoptive parents' harsh parenting. Adoptive fathers' harsh parenting was inversely related to birth mother positive temperament, indicating evocative rGE, as well as to marital quality. Adoptive parents' negative temperamental characteristics were related to h…

Predictors of Positive Outcomes in Offspring of Depressed Parents and Non-depressed Parents Across 20 Years.

Understanding differences in factors leading to positive outcomes in high-risk and low-risk offspring has important implications for preventive interventions. We identified variables predicting positive outcomes in a cohort of 235 offspring from 76 families in which one, both, or neither parent had major depressive disorder. Positive outcomes were termed resilient in offspring of depressed parents, and competent in offspring of non-depressed parents, and defined by two separate criteria: absence of psychiatric diagnosis and consistently high functioning at 2, 10, and 20 years follow-up. In off

The influence of a multisensory intervention for preterm infants provided by parents, on developmental abilities and on parental stress levels.

Evaluation of a multisensory intervention based on the developmental approach provided by parents, during neonatal intensive care unit hospitalization of their preterm infants. After guidance of parents and implementation of intervention program, children were followed up to 2 to 3 years using scales for evaluation of parental stress levels and child's development. Our 2 to 3 years' follow-up study included 41 infants (20 controls and 21 who received parental-guided intervention) as part of a group of 95 preterm infants who participated in a short-term study. The intervention group showed sign

Developing policy in the provision of parenting programmes: integrating a review of reviews with the perspectives of both parents and professionals.

BACKGROUND: Parenting programmes are a key component of the delivery of children's services, but evidence-based policy has often proved difficult to implement. METHODS: The present review addressed this issue by integrating a review of systematic reviews of parenting programmes and a series of focus groups with parents and professionals involved in parenting across three agencies in a regional area (health, education and social work). The review summarizes parenting interventions targeting infant mental health, emotional and behavioural difficulties, autism spectrum disorder and attention def…

Parenting stress and psychosocial well-being among parents with twins conceived naturally or by reproductive technology.

This study compared parenting stress and psychosocial well-being among parents with 1 year old twins conceived in three different ways: (i) spontaneously without any medical assistance (54 families), (ii) spontaneously following hormonal treatment (25 families) and (iii) following in-vitro fertilization (IVF) or artificial insemination (AI) with the semen of the social father (24 families). The investigation included the Parenting Stress Index (PSI) and the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-30). Since the presence of older children differed significantly between the three groups, this factor w…

Familial risk factors to oppositional defiant disorder and conduct disorder: parental psychopathology and maternal parenting.

In a sample of 177 clinic-referred children aged 7-13, an association was found between a diagnosis of conduct disorder (CD) and several aspects of family functioning: maternal parenting (supervision and persistence in discipline) and parental adjustment (paternal antisocial personality disorder and paternal substance abuse). Children with oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) were intermediate to families of children with CD and clinic control children on all variables, but differed from control children only in having a higher rate of paternal substance abuse and paternal antisocial personalit…

A Trio of Risk Factors for Childhood Sexual Abuse: Investigating Exposure to Parental Domestic Violence, Parental Addiction, and Parental Mental Illness as Correlates of Childhood Sexual Abuse.

Targeted screening for sexual abuse is needed for social workers to accurately identify those at risk. Drawing on a cumulative disadvantage framework, this study investigates how parental addictions, parental mental illness, and exposure to domestic violence, both individually and cumulatively, are associated with childhood sexual abuse (CSA). Two waves of regionally representative data were analyzed. Bivariate and logistic regression analyses were conducted using the 2010 Brief Risk Factor Surveillance Survey (BRFSS) (n = 9,241 men, n = 13,627 women) and replicated using the 2012 BRFSS (n = 1

Effectiveness of Parenting Programs in Preventing Child Maltreatment: A Systematic Review of Randomized Controlled Trials.

Parenting programs are a key strategy for reducing child maltreatment and strengthening parents' protective factors. However, evidence for their effectiveness remains inconclusive, and few reviews have examined results by outcome domains or program types. This article aims to analyze the effectiveness of parenting programs in preventing or reducing child maltreatment and improving parenting and family dynamics. We conducted a systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published between 2013 and 2023, through the Web of Science, Scopus, Education Resources Information Center (ERIC…

Associations between parenting styles, problematic smartphone use, and depression severity in adolescents with depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent depression represents a significant public health issue in China. Parenting styles and problematic smartphone use (PSU) are closely associated with adolescent depression. Consistent with the I-PACE model, depression is considered a distal vulnerability factor for PSU; however, among adolescents already diagnosed with depressive disorder, whether PSU is associated with increased symptom severity remains unclear, and the potential indirect role of parenting styles warrants further investigation. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among adolescent patients diag…
