A framework for implementing Patient and Public Involvement in mental health research: The PATHWAY research programme benchmarked against NIHR standards.

BACKGROUND: Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) in research has become a key component recommended by research commissioners, grant award bodies and specified in government policies. Despite the increased call for PPI, few studies have demonstrated how to implement PPI within large-scale research studies. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the current study was to provide a case example of the implementation of a patient advisory group in a large-scale mental health research programme (PATHWAY) and to benchmark this against UK standards. METHOD: A PPI group was incorporated throughout the PATHWAY resear

Big Mistake: Knowing and Doing Better in Patient Engagement.

Pushing back on policies favored by dying patients is a challenging endeavor, requiring tact, engagement, openness to bidirectional learning, and willingness to offer alternative solutions. It's easy to make missteps, especially in the age of social media. Holly Fernandez Lynch shares her experience learning with and from the amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) community, first as a caricature of an ivory tower bioethicist and more recently as a trusted advisor, at least for some. Patient-engaged bioethics doesn't mean taking the view that patients are always right, but even when disagreement

Involving patients as research partners in research in rheumatology: a literature review in 2023.

OBJECTIVE: The inclusion of patient research partners (PRPs) in research projects is increasingly recognised and recommended in rheumatology. The level of involvement of PRPs in translational research in rheumatology remains unknown, while in randomised clinical trials (RCTs), it has been reported to be 2% in 2020. Therefore, we aimed to assess the involvement of PRPs in recent translational studies and RCTs in rheumatology. METHODS: We conducted a scoping literature review of the 80 most recent articles (40 translational studies and 40 RCTs) from four target diseases: rheumatoid arthritis, p

Impact of Patient Engagement and Social Determinants of Health on Care of Eosinophilic Gastrointestinal Disorders Patients.

The purpose of this study was to identify factors that influence eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders (EGID) patients to switch gastroenterologists, assess the prevalence of social determinants of health (SDoH) in EGID patients, and the impact of SDoH on provider switching. 191 patients/caregivers participated in this cross-sectional, online study distributed through Patient Advocacy Groups. The 35-question survey took about 20 minutes to complete and was divided into three sections: demographics; 10 questions about provider switching; and nine-domain SDoH screen.Patients with EGIDs often s

Perspectives of residents on shared decision making in medication management: A qualitative study.

OBJECTIVES: Shared decision making is the process in which the person, their representative, and health care professional share information with each other, participate in the decision-making process, and agree on a course of action. At present, very little is known about shared decision making (SDM) in medication management from the perspective of long-term care facility residents. The objective of this study was to identify residents' beliefs, motivation, and aspects of the environment that facilitate or impede SDM. DESIGN: A qualitative study was conducted using face-to-face semi-structure

A Smartphone App to Promote Patient Activation and Support Shared Decision-making in People With a Diagnosis of Schizophrenia in Outpatient Treatment Settings (Momentum Trial): Randomized Controlled Assessor-Blinded Trial.

BACKGROUND: Shared decision-making (SDM) is a process aimed at facilitating patient-centered care by ensuring that the patient and provider are actively involved in treatment decisions. In mental health care, SDM has been advocated as a means for the patient to gain or regain control and responsibility over their life and recovery process. To support the process of patient-centered care and SDM, digital tools may have advantages in terms of accessibility, structure, and reminders. OBJECTIVE: In this randomized controlled trial, we aimed to investigate the effect of a digital tool to support p

Participatory research in health promotion: a critical review and illustration of rationales.

In health promotion research, enthusiasm for patient and public involvement (PPI) is growing. However, a lack of conceptual clarity leads to ambiguities in participatory processes and purposes, and hampers efforts to achieve and evaluate PPI in research. This study provides an overview of its underlying reasons-or rationales-so as to better understand, guide and interpret PPI in research practice. We conducted a critical review to identify typologies of rationales for PPI. We re-categorized the different types of rationales from these typologies based on their content. We illustrated the resul

New medical big data for P4 medicine on allergic conjunctivitis.

Allergic conjunctivitis affects approximately 15-20% of the global population and can permanently deteriorate one's quality of life (QoL) and work productivity, leading to societal work force costs. Although not fully understood, allergic conjunctivitis is a multifactorial disease with a complex network of environmental, lifestyle, and host contributory risk factors. To effectively enhance the quality of treatment for patients with allergic conjunctivitis, as well as other allergic diseases, the field must first comprehend the pathology underlying various individualized subjective symptoms and

Do we need better information to advise women with stress incontinence on their choice of surgery? Report from the ICI-RS 2018.

AIMS: The regulatory warnings about the safety of the synthetic midurethral slings (MUS) had a significant effect on how patients and physicians approach surgical management of stress urinary incontinence (SUI). In this changing landscape, the purpose of this research Think Tank (TT) was to provide an update of the current knowledge about the safety and efficacy of SUI surgery, to review patient goals and expectations and to identify factors affecting the decision making for surgery. METHODS: This is a consensus report of the proceedings of TT3: "Do we need better information to advise women

Study partners should be required in preclinical Alzheimer's disease trials.

BACKGROUND: In an effort to intervene earlier in Alzheimer's disease (AD), clinical trials are testing promising candidate therapies in preclinical disease. Preclinical AD trial participants are cognitively normal, functionally independent, and autonomous decision-makers. Yet, like AD dementia trials, preclinical trials require dual enrollment of a participant and a knowledgeable informant, or study partner. MAIN TEXT: The requirement of dyadic enrollment is a barrier to recruitment and may present unique ethical challenges. Despite these limitations, the requirement should continue. Study pa

OMERACT Quality-adjusted Life-years (QALY) Working Group: Do Current QALY Measures Capture What Matters to Patients?

OBJECTIVE: To understand the limitations with current patient-reported outcome measures (PROM) used to generate quality-adjusted life-years (QALY) in rheumatology, and set a research agenda. METHODS: Two activities were undertaken. The first was a scoping review of published studies that have used PROM to generate QALY in rheumatology between 2011 and 2016. The second was an interactive "eyeball test" exercise at Outcome Measures in Rheumatology 13 that compared subdomains of widely used generic PROM, as identified through the scoping review, to subdomains of the Assessment of SpondyloArthrit

The Overestimation Phenomenon in a Skill-Based Gaming Context: The Case of March Madness Pools.

Over 100 million people are estimated to take part in the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament Championship bracket contests. However, relatively little is known about consumer behavior in skill-based gaming situations (e.g., sports betting). In two studies, we investigated the overestimation phenomenon in the "March Madness" context. In Study 1 (N = 81), we found that individuals who were allowed to make their own predictions were significantly more optimistic about their performance than individuals who did not make their own selections. In Study 2 (N = 197), all subjects participated in a mock

Shared decision-making, the working alliance, and patient-centered care: A simultaneous concept analysis and review of the literature.

OBJECTIVE: To identify the conceptual similarities, differences, and interrelationships between shared decision-making (SDM), the working alliance, and patient-centered care (PCC) in primary care. METHODS: This study is a simultaneous concept analysis based on the method of Walker and Avant (2005) and Haase et al. (1992). First, a systematic search was conducted for articles published between 2012 and 2022 to identify those describing definitions, antecedents, attributes, consequences, and empirical referents of any of the three concepts. Then, data was extracted and organized into a validity

Identifying patient-centered outcomes in progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis: Results from IMPACT.

OBJECTIVES: In rare diseases like progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis (PFIC), lack of evidence results in treatment variability and strategies for families to engage care teams to understand how variability affects overall health are unknown. Patient-centered comparative effectiveness research (CER) has been identified as an approach to address these challenges, but CER-specific knowledge and infrastructure are lacking. We present the results from IMPACT (Identifying research targets by Merging Patient And Clinician Treatment information), a 2-year capacity-building project for patie

Lessons in clinical reasoning - pitfalls, myths, and pearls: a case of persistent dysphagia and patient partnership.

OBJECTIVES: Diagnostic excellence underscores the patient-centered diagnosis and patient engagement in the diagnostic process. In contrast to a patient-centered diagnosis, a doctor-centered diagnosis with a lack of patient engagement may inhibit the diagnostic process due to the lack of responsibility, disrupted information, and increased effect of cognitive biases, particularly in a situation where multiple physicians are involved. In this paper, we suggest a promising idea to enhance patient engagement in the diagnostic process by using written information by a patient about their perspectiv

Pragmatic patient engagement in designing pragmatic oncology clinical trials.

Oncology trials are the cornerstone of effective and safe therapeutic discoveries. However, there is increasing demand for pragmatism and patient engagement in the design, implementation and dissemination of oncology trials. Many researchers are uncertain about making trials more practical and even less knowledgeable about how to meaningfully engage patients without compromising scientific rigor to meet regulatory requirements. The present work provides practical guidance for addressing both pragmaticism and meaningful patient engagement. Applying evidence-based approaches like PRECIS-2-tool a

Patient engagement, treatment preferences and shared decision-making in the treatment of opioid use disorder in adults: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Opioid use disorder (OUD) is characterised by the fifth Edition of the Diagnostic and Statistics Manual as a problematic pattern of opioid use (eg, fentanyl, heroin, oxycodone) that leads to clinically significant impairment. OUD diagnoses have risen substantially over the last decade, and treatment services have struggled to meet the demand. Evidence suggests when patients with chronic illnesses are matched with their treatment preferences and engaged in shared decision-making (SDM), health outcomes may improve. However, it is not known whether SDM could impact outcomes in speci

Understanding the influences and impact of patient-clinician communication in cancer care.

BACKGROUND: Patient-clinician communication is thought to be central to care outcomes, but when and how communication affects patient outcomes is not well understood. OBJECTIVE: We propose a conceptual model and classification framework upon which the empirical evidence base for the impact of patient-clinician communication can be summarized and further built. DESIGN: We use the proposed model and framework to summarize findings from two recent systematic reviews, one evaluating the use of shared decision making (SDM) on cancer care outcomes and the other evaluating the role of physician rec
