Preoperative Zung depression scale predicts patient satisfaction independent of the extent of improvement after revision lumbar surgery.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Patient satisfaction ratings are increasingly being used in health care as a proxy for quality and are becoming the focal point for several quality improvement initiatives. Affective disorders, such as depression, have been shown to influence patient-reported outcomes and self-interpretation of health status. We hypothesize that patient psychiatric profiles influence reported satisfaction with care, independent of surgical effectiveness. PURPOSE: To assess the predictive value of preoperative depression on patient satisfaction after revision surgery for same-level recurren…

General practitioners assessment highlights excellent patient satisfaction following bar removal after Nuss procedure in children and adolescents.

BACKGROUND: We recently demonstrated that minimally invasive repair of pectus excavatum (MIRPE) achieves a lasting patient satisfaction after bar removal. This correlated with parent ratings. It has been postulated that patient ratings may be biased by high preoperative patient expectations. The aim of this study was to compare patient self-assessment with general practitioners (GPs) assessment. METHODS: Of the 39 patients who underwent bar removal after MIRPE between 2002 and 2006, 39 GPs were asked to answer a modified version of a former single-step questionnaire to evaluate their opinion …

Modified superficial musculoaponeurotic system face-lift: a review of 327 consecutive procedures and a patient satisfaction assessment.

BACKGROUND: A conventional superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS) face-lift is well established because it allows the skin envelope to be rotated in a bit more lateral direction than the cephalad redirection of the SMAS flap. This ensures an individualization of the treatment plan according to the needs of the patient and avoids a postoperative stretched look. However, this technique has some limitations with respect to its long-term effects on the sagging tissue, inadequate lifting of the malar fat pad, and flattening of the nasolabial fold. METHODS: The procedure described by the auth

Outcome analysis, including patient and parental satisfaction, regarding nonvascularized free toe phalanx transfer in congenital hand deformities.

The therapy for congenital hand malformations, especially in symbrachydactyly and constriction ring syndromes, is challenging. Between 1975 and 1995, 20 children with congenital hand deformities underwent reconstruction by 56 nonvascularized free toe phalanx transfers. The average age at initial surgery was 4.8 (range, 0.5 to 22) years. Retrospectively, the children were examined after an average of 3.5 (range, 1.5 to 17.6) years for function of the hand, transplanted phalanx growth, assessment for the epiphyseal plate, and assessment for psychologic performance with their parents. Patient satisfaction following carpal-tunnel decompression: a comparison of patients with and without osteoarthritis of the wrist.

The aim of this study was to assess whether surgical decompression for carpal-tunnel syndrome (CTS) in the presence of primary or secondary osteoarthritis of the wrist is associated with poorer patient satisfaction. We did a retrospective matched cohort study. Twenty-four patients who underwent surgical decompression for CTS secondary to osteoarthritis were identified by reviewing the notes and the radiographs. A control group consisted of 24 patients without osteoarthritis of the wrist who underwent carpal-tunnel decompression. The control group was matched for age, sex, side, and neuro-physi…

On demand therapy of reflux oesophagitis--a prospective study of symptoms, patient satisfaction and quality of life.

BACKGROUND: In patients with low-grade reflux oesophagitis adequate symptom control is the aim of treatment. Effervescent tablets alleviate heartburn more rapidly than ordinary tablets. AIM: To investigate symptom control, patient satisfaction, health-related quality of life and disease progress when ranitidine 150 mg effervescent tablets were offered as on demand treatment. We also wanted to investigate whether any biological or psycho-social factor could predict patient satisfaction. METHOD: Consecutive patients with endoscopically verified reflux oesophagitis grade I-II were followed up f…

Depression in spouses of chronic pain patients: the role of patient pain and anger, and marital satisfaction.

Although several studies have shown that spouses of chronic pain patients may experience clinically significant depressive symptoms few studies have comprehensively examined the role of both patient and spouse-related factors in the development and maintenance of this emotional distress. Twenty-nine married male chronic benign low back pain patients and their spouses were recruited in order to examine the role of patient, spouse, and marital factors in spouse depressive symptomatology. The results indicated that 28% percent of the spouses in the sample reported significantly depressed mood. A

Nipple Reconstruction Using the "Arrow Flap" Technique: Outcomes and Patients Satisfaction.

INTRODUCTION: Skin-sparing mastectomy (SSM) entails complete removal of the breast tissue and the nipple and areola complex (NAC) with preservation of as much of the overlying skin as possible. The preservation of the natural skin envelope during SSM improves the aesthetic outcome of immediate breast reconstruction, but the lack of NAC determines that the reconstructed breast remains anatomically incomplete with not always satisfactory final results. For this purpose, the aim of the present study was to investigate and evaluate the impact of nipple reconstruction after skin sparing and skin re
