Individuals with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome are impaired at explicit, but not implicit, discrimination of local forms embedded in global structures.

Individuals with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2DS) are impaired at exploring visual information in space; however, not much is known about visual form discrimination in the syndrome. Thirty-five individuals with 22q11.2DS and 41 controls completed a form discrimination task with global forms made up of local elements. Affected individuals demonstrated clear impairment in detecting local, but not global, differences. Nevertheless, 22q11.2DS participants easily discriminated the same local elements when they were displayed in isolation, and further use of a prime demonstrated preserved facil

Rapid, high-frequency, and theta-coupled gamma oscillations in the inferior occipital gyrus during face processing.

Neuroimaging studies have found greater activation in the inferior occipital gyrus (IOG), or occipital face area, in response to faces relative to non-facial stimuli. However, the temporal, frequency, and functional profiles of IOG activity during face processing remain unclear. Here, this issue was investigated by recording intracranial field potentials in the IOG during the presentation of faces, mosaics, and houses in upright and inverted orientations. Time-frequency statistical parametric mapping analyses revealed greater gamma-band activation in the IOG beginning at 110 msec and covering

Object and space perception - is it a matter of hemisphere?

In the 1980s, following Newcombe's observations, Ungerleider and Mishkin put forward the functional subdivision of the visual system into a ventral stream dedicated to object perception and a dorsal stream dedicated to space perception. Ten years after this discovery, the perception-action model re-defined the dorsal stream as responsible for non-conscious visual guidance, and most recently a tripartition has been suggested to account for a variety of visuospatial functions. Here, we investigated the neural underpinnings of object and space perception by combining the administration of the Vis

Shared versus separate processes for letter and digit identification.

Letters and digits, although similar in many respects, also differ in potentially significant ways. Most importantly, letters are elements of an alphabetic writing system, whereas digits are logographs. In this article, we explore whether letters and digits are identified by a single character identification process that makes no fundamental distinction between the two types of characters, or whether instead letter and digit identification processes diverge at least in some respects. We present evidence from an acquired dyslexic patient, L.H.D., who is impaired in both letter and digit identif

Overlapping activity periods in early visual cortex and posterior intraparietal area in conscious visual shape perception: a TMS study.

Parietal cortex is often activated in brain imaging studies on conscious visual processing, but its causal role and timing in conscious and nonconscious perception are poorly understood. We studied the role of posterior intraparietal sulcus (IPS) and early visual areas (V1/V2) in conscious and nonconscious vision by interfering with their functioning with MRI-guided transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). The observers made binary forced-choice decisions concerning the shape or color of the metacontrast masked targets and rated the quality of their conscious perception. TMS was applied 30, 60

Perception of mirror symmetry in autism spectrum disorders.

Gestalt grouping in autism spectrum disorders (ASD) is selectively impaired for certain organization principles but for not others. Symmetry is a fundamental Gestalt principle characterizing many biological shapes. Sensitivity to symmetry was tested using the Picture Symmetry Test, which requires finding symmetry lines on pictures. Individuals with ASD showed decreased sensitivity to symmetry and a correlation of test performance with performance IQ. Decreased sensitivity for symmetry in ASD is discussed in relation to reduced visual experience of faces in early development.

No neglect-specific deficits in reaching tasks.

It is well established that patients with hemispatial neglect present with severe visuospatial impairments, but studies that have directly investigated visuomotor control have revealed diverging results, with some studies showing that neglect patients perform relatively better on such tasks. The present study compared the visuomotor performance of patients with and without neglect after right-hemisphere stroke with those of age-matched controls. Participants were asked to point either directly towards targets or halfway between two stimuli, both with and without visual feedback during movement

Global and configural visual processing in adults with autism and Asperger syndrome.

This study was designed to explore how adults with autism and Asperger syndrome (ASD) would visually process compound figures. They were tested in two tasks, one involving hierarchical global/local stimuli, the other involving face-like or geometrical stimuli where the processing of the inter-elemental spatial relationships was emphasized. Adults with ASD showed, like controls, a preference for the global level of the hierarchical stimuli. With the stimuli involving inter-elemental spatial relationship manipulations, the adults with ASD showed a preference for local elements, whereas controls

An investigation of some sensory and refractive visual factors in dyslexia.

The role of visual factors in dyslexia has been a long-standing source of controversy. Recent research has suggested that there may be a deficit of the transient visual subsystem in dyslexia. The evidence for this hypothesis comes principally from investigations of spatial and temporal contrast sensitivity and visual persistence. This evidence is reviewed and it is noted that previous work has never applied two of these purported "tests of transient function" to the same subject group. The hypothesised transient system deficit in dyslexia was investigated in a study comparing 43 control with 3

Visual hand display (VHD) as an introductory procedure for measuring vision in infants and young children with visual impairment.

We developed the Visual Hand Display (VHD) to measure vision in visually impaired infants and young children. The VHD is a circular fabric mitten, which is held easily by inserting the hand between the two surfaces. Black-and-white stripes are attached to one surface, 25, 15, 10, 4, and 2 mm per stripe. The VHD acuity is determined by the shortest test distance and the smallest stripes that the patient can detect. The VHD acuities were compared with preferential looking (PL) staircase acuities in 130 patients (53 males, 77 females; age range, 2 to 13 years; median, 21.0 months). Of these, 107

Alterations in rat flash and pattern reversal evoked potentials after acute or repeated administration of carbon disulfide (CS2).

Because solvents may selectively alter portions of visual evoked potentials, we examined the effects of carbon disulfide (CS2) on flash (FEPs) and pattern reversal (PREPs) evoked potentials. Long-Evans rats were administered ip carbon disulfide either acutely or for 30 days. FEPs or PREPs were recorded prior to and 1, 2, 4, 8, or 24 hr after a single dose of CS2 (0, 100, 200, 400, or 500 mg/kg). Flash evoked potentials were also recorded 1, 2, 6, and 24 hr after the last of 30 doses of 200 mg CS2/kg/day. Acute exposure to CS2 consistently decreased the amplitude of FEP peak N160 at 1 hr, depre

Influence of crystalline lens on VEP latency in elderly patients.

The study was performed to compare visual evoked potentials of old aphakic and pseudophakic patients (61 to 80 years) with age-matched controls. No differences were found between latencies of the two groups. Thus it seems that increased lens density of old subjects does not influence the processing of the visual stimulus.

Peripheral scene context modulates task-driven saccades toward peripheral objects.

Peripheral vision plays a crucial role in visual recognition, with previous studies suggesting that cognitive predictions derived from peripheral input enhance object categorization in central vision during single eye-fixation. However, visual perception is dynamic, alternating between ocular fixations and saccades to new objects of interest. In three eye-tracking experiments, we explored how task-relevant predictions extracted from the peripheral scene context influence the gaze-based discrimination of target objects in peripheral vision. We presented both an object and a scene in peripheral

Evaluating the correspondence between face-, scene-, and object-selectivity and retinotopic organization within lateral occipitotemporal cortex.

The organization of human lateral occipitotemporal cortex (lOTC) has been characterized largely according to two distinct principles: retinotopy and category-selectivity. Whereas category-selective regions were originally thought to exist beyond retinotopic maps, recent evidence highlights overlap. Here, we combined detailed mapping of retinotopy, using population receptive fields (pRF), and category-selectivity to examine and contrast the retinotopic profiles of scene- (occipital place area, OPA), face- (occipital face area, OFA) and object- (lateral occipital cortex, LO) selective regions of

Occipital network for figure/ground organization.

To study the cortical mechanism of figure/ground categorization in the human brain, we employed fMRI and the temporal-asynchrony paradigm. This paradigm is able to eliminate any differential activation for local stimulus features, and thus to identify only global perceptual interactions. Strong segmentation of the image into different spatial configurations was generated solely from temporal asynchronies between zones of homogeneous dynamic noise. The figure/ground configuration was a single geometric figure enclosed in a larger surround region. In a control condition, the figure/ground organi

Pattern-reversal visual evoked potentials in patients with newly diagnosed epilepsy.

PURPOSE: The possible occurrence of evoked potential (EP) abnormalities in patients with newly diagnosed epilepsy has been little investigated. The main purpose of the present study was to investigate possible changes in pattern-reversal visual evoked potential (P-VEP) responses in newly diagnosed epilepsy patients. METHODS: By using P-VEPs, latency values of the N75 and P100 together with amplitude values of P100 were recorded in newly diagnosed idiopathic epilepsy patients. The patients comprised two groups; nonphotosensitive (non-PS), and photosensitive (PS) patients. RESULTS: Shortened N

Electrophysiological indexes of illusory contours perception in humans.

The present study investigated brain mechanisms underlying the perception of illusory contours, using recordings of event-related potentials of the brain (ERPs) in right-handed individuals. Forty different stimuli were presented randomly 1600 times in foveal vision; twenty of them produced the perception of illusory contours of a Kanizsa square, the remaining were obtained rotating outwards the inducers and they did not produce any illusory percept. Half of them had white inducers on a black background and vice versa; half of them were symmetrical and the other half asymmetrical. In lateral oc

Use of pattern electroretinography to differentiate acute optic neuritis from acute anterior ischemic optic neuropathy.

The transient pattern electroretinogram (PERG) was recorded from 16 patients with acute optic neuritis and from 13 patients with acute non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (AION). All patients were tested within 35 days from the the onset of visual symptoms and all had significant central visual field abnormalities in their affected eyes as quantified by automated perimetry. Analysis of the PERGs showed that the amplitude of the N95 peak was abnormally reduced for each eye affected with AION while it remained normal in optic neuritis. No significant alteration in P50 amplitude was

Estimation of visual function after optic neuritis: a comparison of clinical tests.

A group of 53 patients who had suffered an attack of unilateral (n = 45) or bilateral (n = 8) optic neuritis more than six months before were subjected to a battery of tests to determine their spatial contrast sensitivity, visual field, and colour vision. The 106 eyes investigated were classified according to their clinical status and visual acuity at the time of the study into unaffected (n = 45), recovered (n = 33), and non-recovered (n = 28). At least one of the three tests gave an abnormal result in 67%, 88%, 100% of the three groups respectively. The results obtained with these three test

People, places, and things: The impact of scene animacy on emotional modulation of the early posterior negativity.

The early posterior negativity (EPN) is a mid-latency event-related potential (ERP) component reliably enhanced by emotionally arousing visual cues. Recent work suggests that modulation of the EPN might depend to some extent on evocative cues featuring animate content. We tested this possibility by recording EEG while 80 participants viewed pleasant, neutral, and unpleasant scenes depicting people, objects, or landscapes. People and object scenes were selected to be comparable in composition and arousal ratings, to enable a direct assessment of the impact of scene animacy, separate from emotio
