Yoga in the treatment of mood and anxiety disorders: A review.

BACKGROUND: Patient use of complementary and alternative treatments, including yoga, to manage mood and anxiety disorders, has been well documented. Despite research interest, there are few recent reviews of the evidence of the benefit of yoga in these conditions. METHOD: The PubMed, Medline and PsycInfo databases were searched for literature published up to July 2008, relating to yoga and depressive and anxiety disorders. RESULTS: The paucity of reported studies and several methodological constraints limit data interpretation. In depressive disorders, yoga may be comparable to medication an

Effects of transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation on anxiety and balance under space constraints in Parkinson's disease with anxiety syndrome: A preliminary study.

BackgroundImpaired balance and anxiety are critical motor and non-motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease. Space constraints could heighten anxiety and compromise balance, particularly in anxious individuals. Transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation (tVNS) has potential for modulating anxiety and motor control, but its effects under space constraints in people with Parkinson's disease (PwPD) remain unclear.ObjectiveWe aimed to investigate the benefits of tVNS on anxiety and dynamic balance under space constraints in anxious PwPD.MethodsSixteen anxious PwPD completed a randomized cross-over trial i

Gut microbiota and metabolic signatures of anxiety in ulcerative colitis: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) usually experience anxiety symptoms that seriously affect their quality of life, treatment, and prognosis. Dysbiosis of the gut microbiota plays an important role in UC and mental illness. However, little is known about the role of the gut microbiota in UC patients with anxiety. OBJECTIVES: To identify the gut-microbiome and fecal metabolome profiles uniquely associated with comorbid anxiety in UC patients and to explore potential biomarkers for diagnosis. DESIGN: A cross-sectional, two-group comparative study. METHODS: To study the underlyi

Cognitive Reserve and Psychological Well-Being in Aging Population of Community-Dwellers in Spain.

INTRODUCTION: Greater brain resilience-the capacity of the brain to maintain normal functioning and cognition with aging-is associated with a slower cognitive decline. Cognitive reserve (CR) is one component of brain resilience and may be supported by educational, occupational, and leisure experiences. PURPOSE: This exploratory, cross-sectional study examined associations among psychological well-being, engagement in leisure activities associated with cognitive reserve, and cognitive performance in older community dwellers (older adults living independently) in Spain. General brain resilience

Assessment of mental and behavioural non-motor symptoms of Parkinson's Disease using Artificial Intelligence (AI): a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder with both motor and non-motor symptoms. Mental and behavioural non-motor symptoms such as cognitive impairment, sleep disturbances, depression, and anxiety greatly affect quality of life but remain difficult to assess with traditional tools. Artificial intelligence has shown potential in healthcare, yet its role in evaluating these symptoms in Parkinson's disease remains under-reviewed. This systematic review aims to evaluate the performance of artificial intelligence tools in diagnosing, assessing, and managing these

Psychological correlates of performance-enhancing drug use: Emotional, cognitive, and social functioning in long-term and short-term users.

INTRODUCTION: Performance-enhancing drug (PED) use-particularly anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS)-has expanded from competitive sport into mainstream fitness settings. Although PED use is associated with emotional, cognitive, and social difficulties, less is known about how duration of use or psychosocial factors shape these outcomes. Understanding these dynamics is essential for identifying individuals at greater risk for psychological impairment. METHODS: A total of 285 adult gym-goers (87 long-term users, 95 short-term users, 103 non-users) completed validated measures of depression (BDI-

Construction and evaluation of two nomograms for screening major depressive disorder and subthreshold depression individuals based on anxiety, depression, and sleep items.

BACKGROUND: Current evidence is insufficient to support specific tools for screening Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). Early detection of subthreshold depression (SD) is crucial in preventing its progression to MDD. This study aims to develop nomograms that visualize the weights of predictors to improve the performance of screening tools. METHODS: Participants were recruited from Peking University Sixth Hospital and Beijing Physical Examination Center between October 2022 and April 2024. The Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI) 5.0.0 was employed as the diagnostic gold standard

Judging others makes me forget: Assessing the cognitive, behavioural, and emotional consequences of other-evaluations on self-evaluations for social anxiety.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: People with Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) evaluate themselves negatively before, during, and after anxiety-provoking social situations, which leads to negative consequences (e.g., performance deficits, memory impairments, and post-event processing). Despite decades of research, little is known regarding whether these evaluations generalize to how they view others. Social projection theory-the belief that others are similar to oneself-might further extend the basic Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) model. Our aim was to understand whether the degree to which people

A Follow-up Study of Electroconvulsive Therapy in Children and Adolescents.

OBJECTIVES: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is an effective and a safe treatment for several severe psychiatric disorders across the age span. However, its use remains controversial and highly stigmatized especially among patients under 18 years. In this study, we examined current symptoms, attitudes, perception, and functioning of patients treated with ECT when they were less than 18 years old. METHODS: Participants had received ECT before age 18, between 1989 and 2015, at a tertiary medical center. Institutional review board-approval was obtained, and study documents (cover letter, consent,

Nesfatin-1, a potent anorexic agent, decreases exploration and induces anxiety-like behavior in rats without altering learning or memory.

The anorectic neuropeptide nesfatin-1 has recently been characterized as a potential mood regulator, but the accurate effect of nesfatin-1 on anxiety and learning and memory behavior and the possible mechanisms remains unknown. In the present study, to test the hypothesis that nesfatin-1 might affect the anxiety-like and learning and memory behaviors in rats via ERK/CREB/BDNF pathway, nesfatin-1 was administered intraperitoneally to rats with the doses (10, 20, 40μg/kg), and the behavioral performance was tested using the open field task, the Morris water maze (MWM), and the Y maze. Moreover,

Effect of recurrent yohimbine on immediate and post-hoc behaviors, stress hormones, and energy homeostatic parameters.

Evidence from experimental models has suggested that acute activation of brain stress and anxiety pathways impacts subsequent behaviors that are mediated or modulated by limbic circuitry. There have been limited investigations of prior or chronic activation of these pathways on subsequent limbic-mediated behaviors. In this study, we tested whether recurrent administration of the anxiogenic compound yohimbine (YOH) could have post-injection effects on brain activation, stress hormones, and performance in sucrose self-administration and startle response paradigms. Rats received six injections ac

Assessment of cognitive function across pregnancy using CANTAB: a longitudinal study.

Significant changes in endogenous plasma hormone levels are required to sustain pregnancy which provides a unique opportunity to study their effect on cognitive function. Four carefully selected tests from the Cambridge Neuropsychological Automated Test Battery (CANTAB) were administered to assess the cognitive function of a group of 23 women during each trimester of pregnancy and at three months following birth. Test scores were compared with a control group of 24 non-pregnant women. The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale was administered to assess anxiety and risk of depression. The Nation

Association Between Psychological Distress and Site-Specific Cancer Incidence: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Depression and anxiety are hypothesized to increase the risk for the development of chronic disease(s), including cancer. Several published observational studies and meta-analyses have investigated the link between depression and anxiety in cancer but have reported conflicting results. To clarify this relationship, a meta-analysis of observational studies reporting an association between depression, anxiety, and cancer incidence was performed. METHODS: Prospective and retrospective cohort studies investigating the relationship between depression, anxiety, and cancer incidence were
