The Chicago Consensus Working Group provides multidisciplinary recommendations for the management of peritoneal mesothelioma. These guidelines are developed with input from leading experts, including surgical oncologists, medical oncologists, pathologists, radiologists, palliative care physicians, and pharmacists. These guidelines recognize and address the emerging need for increased awareness of the appropriate management of peritoneal surface disease. They are not intended to replace the quest for higher levels of evidence.

BACKGROUND: The peritonitis rate among children treated with peritoneal dialysis (PD) has not been widely reported in Saudi Arabia. The study aim was to estimate the peritonitis rate per patient-year and investigate the factors associated with higher peritonitis rates in a sample of PD children at King Abdullah Specialist Children's Hospital-Riyadh (KASCH-R), Saudi Arabia.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 27 PD children treated between September 2007 and December 2017 at KASCH-R. We recorded the children's demographic and clinical data, and the frequency of peritonitis.

Peritonitis is a common complication of peritoneal dialysis that is associated with substantial morbidity and mortality. Peritonitis increases treatment costs and hospitalization events and is the most common reason for transfer to hemodialysis. Although there is much focus on preventing peritoneal dialysis-associated peritonitis, equally as important is appropriate management to minimize the morbidity of a peritonitis episode when it has occurred. Despite the presence of international guidelines on peritonitis treatment, the evidence base to support optimal peritonitis treatment practices is …

Peritonitis is a critical complication of peritoneal dialysis (PD). Investigators have reported the risk of peritonitis in patients on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) versus automated peritoneal dialysis (APD), but the available evidence is predominantly based on observational studies which failed to report on the connection type. Our understanding of the relationship between peritonitis risk and PD modality thus remained insufficient. We studied 285 participants who began PD treatment between 1997 and 2014 at three hospitals in Nara Prefecture in Japan. We matched 106 APD pat…

In order to determine the rate and factors related to peritonitis in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients treated at a hospital in Lima, Peru; a retrospective single-cohort study was conducted during the period 2014-2016. All patients diagnosed with chronic renal disease from the PD program at the Cayetano Heredia Hospital were included. The incidence rate of peritonitis was estimated and a bivariate analysis was performed to assess related factors. A total of 73 patients were included. The incidence rate of peritonitis was 0.60 episodes per patient per year; 46.7% of the cultures were positive a…

Peritoneal dialysis (PD)-related peritonitis is a common complication of PD. Nonocclusive mesenteric ischemia (NOMI) is a rare complication of PD-related peritonitis, has a high mortality rate, and therefore should be detected early once it occurs. We describe a case of a 70-year-old woman on PD presented with moderate abdominal pain and low blood pressure, which contributed to the early diagnosis of PD-related peritonitis complicated with NOMI. Increased white cell count of 7150/μL (neutrophil, 84%) in dialysate effluent was diagnostic of PD-related peritonitis, which was later found to be ca…

BACKGROUND: Fungal peritonitis (FP) is an infrequent but serious complication in children undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD). This study aimed to explore the risk factors, clinical manifestations, causative organisms, fungal susceptibility findings, and outcomes of FP in children from Saudi Arabia.
METHODS: In this case-control study, the medical records and laboratory results of paediatric patients aged 0-14 years who underwent PD were reviewed for FP episodes. All FP episodes were matched with PD-related bacterial peritonitis episodes (1:4 ratio).
RESULTS: A total of 194 episodes of PD-re…

Infections with Listeria monocytogenes (LM) are very uncommon and severe especially in immunocompromised people. We report a continuous cycling peritoneal dialysis (CCPD) patient who presented initially disseminated listeriosis with peritonitis. He was successfully treated with intraperitoneal and intravenous ampicillin but died unfortunately from a cardiorespiratory arrest due to food inhalation. It is the 20th case of such peritonitis mentioned among PD patients and the first reported in Belgium. This case illustrates the importance of a systematic approach to get quick diagnosis and effecti…

We experienced a case of encapsulated peritoneal sclerosis(EPS)that developed as a result of peritoneal deterioration induced by ventriculo-peritoneal(VP)shunting. The patient was a 48-year-old man who underwent VP shunting five times since 1 month of age. Six months after the last operation, abdominal symptoms developed and the patient was hospitalized. A localized cyst was recognized in the left upper abdomen, and we diagnosed him with a cerebrospinal fluid pseudocyst. Soon, a shunt tube translocation was performed to another portion of the abdominal cavity, but a new short-term cyst appeare

Relapsing peritonitis in peritoneal dialysis patients is one of the complications that jeopardizes the continuity of the technique. It is often associated with the formation of biofilm in the lumen of the catheter. To date, its removal remains the only recommended attitude. Due to its antimicrobial and antifungal properties, taurolidine has been previously used for the sealing of central line catheters and hemodialysis. Despite the good results obtained, there is no evidence available regarding its utility in peritoneal dialysis. This case report describes the use of taurolidine (TauroLock™HEP…

Peritoneal dialysis (PD) peritonitis has been decreasing in frequency in recent years. However, it still causes significant morbidity and mortality. Nearly 1%-6% of all peritonitis attacks result in death. Hospitalizations, loss of PD access, and intravascular catheter insertion for hemodialysis are some examples of morbidity. Approximately 15%-20% of the infectious mortality of PD patients is attributed to peritonitis. The responsible pathogens are usually Gram-positive bacteria, but unusual pathogens may be present. Prognosis is worse when Gram-negative and fungal pathogens are involved. We …

INTRODUCTION: Paracoccus yeei is a Gram-negative coccobacilli which is often an environmental organism. However, infection of patients usually with underlying immunosuppression has been described in the last decades, mainly due to the emergence of diagnostic molecular methods.
CASE PRESENTATION: We describe here a case of P. yeei peritonitis in a patient undergoing peritoneal dialysis. Turbidity of the peritoneal dialysate was the sole clinical manifestation. Inflammatory markers were not raised. A peritoneal fluid specimen showed increased white-cell count, but no organisms were seen on Gram…

We present the first report of a patient with peritoneal dialysis (PD)-related peritonitis due to Clostridium ramosum, an anaerobe bacterium that is commonly found in normal fecal flora. On rare occasions, it can be pathogenic in immunocompromised individuals. Clostridium species, including Clostridium ramosum, should be included in the differential diagnosis of PD-related peritonitis.

Peritonitis is a common and serious complication of peritoneal dialysis (PD) with significant morbidity. We report the first case of relapsing Dokdonella koreensis peritonitis in a patient on peritoneal dialysis. A 63-year-old Chinese man, with history of renal failure on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis, presented with cloudy peritoneal effluent and abdominal pain. There was no sign or symptom suggestive of exit-site/tunnel tract infection. Peritoneal effluent cultures yielded Dokdonella koreensis which was initially misidentified as Weeksella virosa and Brevundimonas species by the …

PURPOSE: Diffuse malignant peritoneal mesothelioma (MPM) is a rare and ultimately fatal cancer that was first described just over a century ago. It is a diffuse malignancy arising from the mesothelial lining of the peritoneum; morbidity and mortality from MPM is due to its propensity to progress locoregionally within the abdominal cavity.
METHODS: The purpose of this article is to review the current state-of-the-science related to the diagnosis, staging, and treatment of MPM.
RESULTS: The condition afflicts men and women equally and the peak incidence is between 55 and 60 years of age althou

Peritoneal dialysis (PD) has been an attractive treatment for end-stage kidney disease. Long-term exposure to the PD solution creates functional and morphological alterations, and these alterations diminish the efficacy of PD. It is important to establish an evaluation of the changes in PD patients and strategies for the prevention of PD damage and encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis (EPS). We determined the relationship between clinical findings and macroscopic morphological findings by laparoscopy in patients receiving PD. Macroscopic intraperitoneal findings were recorded at the PD catheter

Although acute peritonitis is a common and severe complication associated with peritoneal dialysis, the culture-based test used as the diagnostic criterion for this disease is often too slow to allow appropriate point-of-care diagnosis of specific bacterial infection. To address this problem, Zhang et al. report the efficacy of a novel set of immune biomarkers derived from a machine-learning algorithm applied to patient data. This fingerprint could predict major pathogenic causes of peritonitis.

Interference of conventional peritoneal dialysis fluids (cPDFs) with peritoneal membrane cell functions may be attributed to the dialysis fluid's low pH, high glucose concentration, and/or the presence of glucose degradation products (GDPs), the last of which leads to higher levels of advanced glycation end-products (AGEs). It has been suggested that the peritoneal membrane might be better preserved by using biocompatible solutions, including cancer antigetn 125 (CA125). This prospective, open-label, multicentre, randomized, controlled, cross-over phase IV study compared the in vivo biocompati

Disseminated peritoneal leiomyomatosis (DPL) is an unusual extrauterine form of leiomyoma that has been found to coexist with its intrauterine counterpart in individuals who have previously undergone laparoscopic myomectomy. The presence of extrauterine masses with the density of smooth muscle on CT imaging and/or with a low signal intensity similar to that of smooth muscle on T 2 weighted MRI in a patient presenting with associated intrauterine leiomyoma and/or a history of previous laparoscopic myomectomy suggests the possibility of DPL. Imaging studies help in diagnosing and delineating the
