A thorough search for a soluble peroxidase in 31 different tissues of rat indicated the presence of a constitutive activity only in lacrimal, preputial and submaxillary gland. Haematocrit and glutathione peroxidase activity in blood, as well as selenium levels in blood, erythrocytes and plasma, were determined in 15 patients during four courses of cisplatin combination treatment for testicular teratoma. The haematocrit steadily declined, necessitating frequent blood transfusions during or after treatment. The cause(s) for decreased reduced glutathione (GSH) content of human senile cataracts were investigated by determination of three enzymes of GSH metabolism: GSH S-transferase, GSH peroxidase and GSH reductase.
