OBJECTIVE: To investigate patients with acute optic neuritis (ON) for changes of the retinal veins.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Seventy-six patients with acute ON were extensively neuro-ophthalmologically examined.
RESULTS: Multiple sclerosis (MS) was found in 41 patients of whom 1 had periphlebitis retinae (PR) and 2 had venous sheathing (VS). Probable MS was found in 15 patients without prior symptoms of MS. One had PR and VS, and 2 had VS. Twenty patients had mono-symptomatic ON, none had retinal changes.

We have reported the cases of two patients who had acute pylephlebitis associated with portal vein thrombosis and septic hepatic emboli as a result of right colonic diverticulitis. Although rare, pylephlebitis is a treatable but often lethal complication of intra-abdominal sepsis. Several bacterial pathogens, especially Escherichia coli are associated with pylephlebitis. Early suspicion and prompt antibiotic therapy can lead to resolution of portal vein thrombosis and hepatic abscess formation, resulting in full recovery for the patient. Surgery may not be required. Two cases of Eales' disease with myelopathy are reported. The first case evinced spastic paraplegia and minimal bladder dysfunction. The unusual features were that the neurologic deficit progressed over 2 years and sensations were normal. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) proteins were raised. Visual evoked responses (VER) and brain stem evoked responses (BSER) were normal. The second case evinced brain stem involvement in addition to dorsal myelopathy. CSF examination showed lymphocytic pleocytosis.

To evaluate the role of pars plana vitrectomy in the management of intraocular inflammation with dense vitreous opacification, vitrectomy was performed in 14 patients with chronic uveitis, 6 eyes with retinal periphlebitis, and in 8 cases of endophthalmitis. Visual acuity improved in 21 eyes, remained unchanged in 3, and deteriorated in 4 cases (follow-up period 2 months to 3 years). Ten randomly selected patients with recurrent non-specific small vessel vasculitis (edema, petechiae, spontaneous bruising, peripheral cyanosis) were studied under rigid environmental control. All cleared their symptoms without medications. All patients had their vasculitis reproduced after direct challenge with numerous individual foods and chemicals. Multiple incitants were found in each patient.

86 plain films of the abdomen from 63 patients with acute mesenteric infarction were compared with plain films of 90 patients with acute abdomen of different origin. The airless abdomen, the increased thickness of the gut wall and the hairpin sign proved tbe nonspecific, but more pronounced and more frequent in mesenteric infarction.
